Background: High birth weight has serious adverse impacts on chronic health conditions and development in children. This study identifies the social determinants and obstetric complications of high birth weight adjusted for gestational age and baby gender.

Methods: Pregnant women were recruited from three maternity hospitals in South-East Queensland in Australia during antenatal clinic visits.

My face, a window to communication: using creative design in learning.

Creative art as part of assessment in nursing is a powerful alternative to traditional methods of promoting engagement for students who have different learning styles, and who value engagement in creative activities. This paper describes an innovative assessment approach for first year nursing students which addressed the development of a beginning knowledge base in therapeutic communication as well as critical thinking and writing skills. Each student was asked to design a wearable mask to display an abstract interpretation of the therapeutic communication skills required as a nursing student, followed by a discussion about therapeutic nursing communication.

While breast cancer is often associated with older women, in the year 2000, 25 % of new breast cancer diagnoses in Australia affected young women. An interpretive study using in-depth interviews provided valuable insight into the lived experiences of six young Queensland women living with breast cancer. This paper presents data from the study with a particular focus on young women and the impact it has on their social situation and their family.

So-called diseases of affluence, otherwise known as 'lifestyle diseases', are attributed to modifiable risk factors that are influenced by lifestyle and personal behaviour. Leading by example is an important way for public health principles to be communicated. In the university context, students of nursing can become aware of the challenge to integrate and apply health principles in their own life so that they become responsible health leaders in the community.
