Use of nanoparticles in radiation oncology.

Cancer Radiother

November 2024

Radiotherapy Department, Grenoble Alps University Hospital, Grenoble, France; Inserm UA7, University of Grenoble Alps, Synchrotron Radiation for Biomedical Research (ESRF), Grenoble, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Radiotherapy plays a crucial role in treating cancer but often struggles with effective local control, especially in advanced tumours that are resistant to radiation.
  • Surrounding healthy tissues often limit how much radiation can be safely used, which can lead to complications.
  • New agents like chemotherapies and targeted monoclonal antibodies have shown promise in improving treatment outcomes, and current research is exploring innovative radioenhancers, particularly nanoparticles like NBTXR3 and AGuIX®.

Background: Postoperative rectovaginal fistula leads to a loss of patients' quality of life and presents significant challenges to the surgeon. The literature focusing specifically on postoperative rectovaginal fistulas is limited. The objective of the present study is to identify factors that can enhance the success of the management of this postoperative rectovaginal fistula.

From Reporting to Improving: How Root Cause Analysis in Teams Shape Patient Safety Culture.

Risk Manag Healthc Policy

July 2024

Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Grenoble-Alps University Hospital; Laboratory TIMC-IMAG, UMR 5525 Joint Research Unit, National Center for Scientific Research, Faculty of Medicine, Grenoble Alps University, Grenoble, France.

Background: Given the increasing focus on patient safety in healthcare systems worldwide, understanding the impact of Continuous Quality Improvement Programs (QIPs) is crucial. QIPs, including Morbidity and Mortality Conferences (MMCs) and Experience Feedback Committees (EFCs), have been identified as effective strategies for enhancing patient safety culture. These programs engage healthcare professionals in the identification and analysis of adverse events to foster a culture of safety (ie the product of individual and group value, attitudes, and perceptions about quality and safety).

As people age, there is a natural decline in cognitive functioning and brain structure. However, the relationship between brain function and cognition in older adults is neither straightforward nor uniform. Instead, it is complex, influenced by multiple factors, and can vary considerably from one person to another.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common type of sleep-disordered breathing associated with multiple comorbidities. Nearly a billion people are estimated to have obstructive sleep apnea, which carries a substantial economic burden, but under-diagnosis is still a problem. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the first-line treatment for OSAS.

In contrast to obstructive sleep apnoea, the peak of sympathetic tone in central sleep apnoea occurs during the hyperventilation phase. To explore the temporal association of premature ventricular complex (PVC) burden in the context of the apnoea/hypopnoea-hyperpnoea cycle, the duration of apnoea/hypopnoea was defined as 100 %. We assessed the PVC burden throughout the apnoea/hypopnoea-hyperpnoea cycle during the periods of ±150 % in 50 % increments before and after the apnoea/hypopnoea phase.

Insights of undergraduate health sciences students about a French interprofessional training initiative.

BMC Med Educ

March 2024

Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Grenoble-Alps University Hospital, Laboratory TIMC-IMAG, UMR 5525 Joint Research Unit, National Center for Scientific Research, Faculty of Medicine, Grenoble Alps University, Grenoble, France.

Background: Incorporating interprofessional collaboration within healthcare is critical to delivery of patient-centered care. Interprofessional Education (IPE) programs are key to promoting such collaboration. The 'Public Health Service' (PHS) in France is a mandatory IPE initiative that embodies this collaborative spirit, bringing together students from varied health undergraduate training programs-nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy, midwifery, and medicine- in a common training program focused on primary prevention.

Objectives: Despite a significant increase in the prevalence of vegetarianism and veganism in children in France, data on the care pathway of these children are scarce. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of the medical follow-up of vegan/vegetarian children, to evaluate the medical practices, and to analyze the perceptions of parents.

Materials And Methods: This was a double cross-sectional survey.

Purpose: To report on our experience with a simplified, suction-bottle-drain technique of thoracic drain (Redon-like) combined with fully thoracoscopic vertebral body tethering (VBT) and a limited pleural approach, with particular focus on the rate of pulmonary complications.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed on all consecutive patients who underwent VBT for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. For all subjects, a 10G Redon drain, an active drain system consisting of a perforated tube and a suction bottle, was placed intrathoracically and tunneled under the skin.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal deformity that evolves during adolescence. Combined with static 3D X-ray acquisitions, novel approaches using motion capture allow for the analysis of the patient dynamics. However, as of today, they cannot provide an internal analysis of the spine in motion.

Background: Mandatory "sanitary service" is an inter-disciplinary health promotion program that ensures inclusion of action training in the curriculum of French students in healthcare professions. Its evaluation is important to identify areas for improvement.

Objectives: The objective was to evaluate the satisfaction of the actors with the general perception of the program and with its three different phases: e-learning, practical training, and interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of self-expandable metal stents compared to emergency resection for treating right-sided obstructive colon cancer, highlighting growing interest in stents as a surgical bridge.
  • - An analysis of 6,343 patients showed a high success rate for stent placement (92%) and lower emergency resection mortality rates (5%), with similar rates of complications between both methods.
  • - The authors conclude that using stents is a safe and effective alternative to emergency resection, potentially allowing for more minimally invasive surgical options, though they note a lack of randomized controlled trials in their review.

Introduction: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the first-line therapy for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). CPAP is highly effective for improving symptoms and quality of life, but the major issue is adherence, with up to 50% of OSA discontinuing CPAP in the first 3 years after CPAP initiation.

Areas Covered: We present the individual and societal costs of non-adherence to CPAP, factors associated with non-adherence to CPAP, as well as current strategies for improving adherence including telehealth, couple-based interventions, and behavioral interventions.

January 2023

Service d'Orthopédie Pédiatrique, Hôpital Femme Mère Enfant, Hôpitaux civils de Lyon, 59 Bd Pinel, 69500 Bron, France.

Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT) is a recently developed surgical technique for the treatment of progressive and severe scoliosis in patients with significant growth potential. It has been used since the first exploratory series, which showed encouraging results on the progressive correction of the major curves. This study reports on a retrospective series of 85 patients extracted from a French cohort, with a follow-up at a minimum of two years after a VBT with recent screws-and-tether constructs.
