Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated a new protocol aimed at preventing hypoglycemia in newborns, targeting 80% adherence over six months in a maternity unit.
  • Overall adherence was 67.6%, with smaller neonates being at higher risk; non-adherence was primarily due to issues with early feeding.
  • Despite some reluctance from staff due to increased workload, the protocol was deemed satisfactory and could benefit from a quality improvement program to enhance adherence and outcomes.

The structural organization of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspensions at the membrane surface during frontal ultrafiltration has been characterized, for the first time, at the nano- and microscale by small-angle X-ray and light scattering (SAXS and SALS, respectively). During filtration, the particles assembled at the membrane surface and formed the so-called concentration polarization layer (CPL), which contains CNCs arranged in a chiral nematic (cholesteric) helicoidal structure, with the long axis of the CNCs oriented parallel to the membrane surface, and the helical axis of the cholesteric structure oriented perpendicular to the membrane surface. The self-organization of CNCs in the form of oriented cholesteric structures was further characterized by a pitch gradient in the CPL.

Introduction: The use of different growth charts can lead to confusion in discussions between professionals. There are obstetric charts (of fetal growth) and neonatal charts (of measurements at birth and of postnatal growth). These charts can be descriptive (derived from an unselected population) or prescriptive (derived from of a population at low risk and with optimal conditions for growth).

An innovative method combining frontal filtration with ultraviolet (UV) curing has been implemented to design cellulosic nanocomposite films with controlled anisotropic textures from nanometric to micrometric length scales. Namely, an aqueous suspension containing poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate polymer (PEGDA) as a photocurable polymer and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) at a 70/30 mass ratio was processed by frontal filtration, followed by in-situ UV-curing in a dedicated cell. This procedure allowed designing nanocomposite films with highly oriented and densely-packed CNCs, homogeneously distributed in a PEGDA matrix over a thickness of ca.

Agarose forms a homogeneous thermoreversible gel in an aqueous solvent above a critical polymer concentration. Contrary to the prevailing consensus, recent confirmations indicate that agarose gels are also stable in non-solvents like acetone and ethanol. A previous study compared gel characterisations and behaviours in water and ethanol, discussing the gelation mechanism.

Hypothesis: Rodlike cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) exhibit significant potential as building blocks for creating uniform, sustainable materials. However, a critical hurdle lies in the need to enhance existing or devise novel processing that provides improved control over the alignment and arrangement of CNCs across a wide spatial range. Specifically, the challenge is to achieve orthotropic organization in a single-step processing, which entails creating non-uniform CNC orientations to generate spatial variations in anisotropy.

Metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for addressing critical issues such as petrochemical separation, water purification, energy storage and drug delivery. Their large-scale deployment, however, is hampered by a limited processability due to their powdery nature. Recently, the hybridization of MOFs with biopolymers has emerged as a greener, biocompatible strategy to shape MOFs composites into more processable membranes, films, and porous materials.

Agarose is known to form a homogeneous thermoreversible gel in an aqueous medium over a critical polymer concentration. The solid-liquid phase transitions are thermoreversible but depend on the molecular structure of the agarose sample tested. The literature has mentioned that agarose gels could remain stable in non-solvents such as acetone or ethanol.

Initiation of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) within 6 h of life is a major concern for treating neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). We aimed to determine clinical and healthcare organizational factors associated with delayed TH in a French population-based cohort of neonates with moderate/severe HIE. Time to reach a rectal temperature of 34 °C defines optimal and delayed (within and over 6 h, respectively) TH.

In this paper, we present the concept and formulation of a short-term Markov corrector to an underlying day-ahead building load forecasting model. The models and the correctors are then integrated to the building supervision, control and data acquisition system to automate the self-updating and retraining processes. The proposed Markov corrector is experimentally proven to significantly improve the reactivity of the forecasting models with respect to untaught variations.

Nowadays, composite materials are widely used in different sectors owing to their improved mechanical and functional properties compared to bulk materials and efficient manufacturing processes. Nevertheless, the majority of these materials are still petroleum-based, which is incompatible with the recent environmental awareness. As a result, in the current study, a fully biomass-based composite material was produced employing poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA) as a bio-based matrix coupled with cellulose powder as fillers and processing aid agent.

This study aimed to evaluate the properties of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) with different hemicellulose contents and cellulose II polymorphs. A link was found between these polysaccharides and the properties of CNFs. A decrease in crystallinity (from 69 to 63%) and changes in the crystalline structure of cellulose subjected to an alkaline environment were observed, promoting the partial conversion of cellulose I to cellulose II (from 2 to 42%) and preventing CNFs production at NaOH concentrations higher than 5%.

Lignin-cellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) are of attracting an increasing interest due to the benefits of maintaining the lignin in the nanomaterial composition. The production of LCNF requires considerable energy consumption, which has been suppressed employing pretreatment of biomass, in which it highlights those that employ enzymes that have the advantage of being more environmentally friendly. Some negative aspects of the presence of lignin in the fiber to obtain cellulose nanofibrils is that it can hinder the delamination of the cell wall and act as a physical barrier to the action of cellulase enzymes.

This paper summarizes some of the essential aspects for the fabrication of functional devices from bottom-up silicon nanowires. In a first part, the different ways of exploiting nanowires in functional devices, from single nanowires to large assemblies of nanowires such as nanonets (two-dimensional arrays of randomly oriented nanowires), are briefly reviewed. Subsequently, the main properties of nanowires are discussed followed by those of nanonets that benefit from the large numbers of nanowires involved.

The consequences of agitation on protein stability are particularly relevant to therapeutic proteins. However, the precise contribution of the different effects induced by agitation in pathways leading to protein denaturation and aggregation at interfaces is not entirely understood. In particular, the contribution of a moving triple line, induced by the sweeping of a solution meniscus on a container wall upon agitation, has only been rarely assessed.

The breakdown and buildup mechanisms in concentrated cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspensions under shear and during relaxation upon cessation of shear were accessed by small-angle X-ray and light scattering combined with rheometry. The dynamic structural changes over nanometer to micrometer lengthscales were related to the well-known three-regime rheological behavior. In the shear-thinning regime I, the large liquid crystalline domains were progressively fragmented into micrometer-sized tactoids, with their cholesteric axis aligned perpendicular to the flow direction.
