To elucidate the spectrum of metastatic solid tumors to the testis and their clinicopathologic features. The databases and files of 26 pathology departments from 9 countries on 3 continents were surveyed to identify metastatic solid tumors to the testis and to characterize their clinicopathologic features in detail. We compiled a series of 157 cases of metastatic solid tumors that secondarily involved the testis.

Four-years retention rate of golimumab administered after discontinuation of non-TNF inhibitors in patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

Background: In patients with rheumatic diseases, the use of biological (b) or targeted synthetic (ts) disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) after discontinuation of tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) is known to be effective. However, data on the use of TNFi after discontinuation of non-TNFi bDMARDs or tsDMARDs (non-TNFi) are scarce. This study assessed the 4-years golimumab retention in patients with rheumatic diseases when used after discontinuation of non-TNFi.

Management of hypocalcemia following thyroid surgery in children.

Introduction: Pediatric post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia management varies significantly from hospital to hospital. The current study has two aims: first, we evaluate demographic data in all pediatric patients submitted to thyroid surgery in our Spanish tertiary hospital over 20 years; secondly, we describe the way that hypocalcemia was diagnosed and treated in that period and present a multidisciplinary protocol for perioperative management of this condition.

Methods: This is a retrospective and observational study of all patients from 0 to 16 years old who underwent thyroid surgery from 2000 to 2020 at our institution.

COVID-19 vaccines reduce mortality in hospitalized patients with oxygen requirements: Differences between vaccine subtypes. A multicontinental cohort study.

The aim of this study was to analyze whether the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine reduces mortality in patients with moderate or severe COVID-19 disease requiring oxygen therapy. A retrospective cohort study, with data from 148 hospitals in both Spain (111 hospitals) and Argentina (37 hospitals), was conducted. We evaluated hospitalized patients for COVID-19 older than 18 years with oxygen requirements.

A new surgical technique for sutureless partial nephrectomy: renal sutureless device.

Background: Several factors impact the preservation of renal function after partial nephrectomy. Warm ischemia time is the main modifiable surgical factor. Renorrhaphy represents the key of hemostasia, but it is associated with increase of warm ischemia time and complications.

International Adoption of Children with Special Needs in Spain.

International adoption has declined in recent years, although the adoption of children with special needs has arisen. We aim to describe our experience in the international adoption of children with special needs and to analyze the concordance between the pathologies included in pre-adoption reports and the diagnosis made upon arrival. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study including internationally adopted children with special needs evaluated at a reference Spanish unit between 2016 and 2019.

Diagnosis and Management of Malnutrition in Patients with Heart Failure.

Heart failure is a disease with an increasingly greater prevalence due to the aging population, the development of new drugs, and the organization of healthcare processes. Malnutrition has been identified as a poor prognostic factor in these patients, very often linked to frailty or to other comorbidities, meaning that early diagnosis and treatment are essential. This paper reviews some important aspects of the pathophysiology, detection, and management of malnutrition in patients with heart failure.

Background: The clinical burden of influenza is increasing worldwide. Aging, immunosuppression, and underlying respiratory illness are determinants of poor clinical outcomes, including greater mortality. Bacterial infections seem to be the main reason.

Impact of days elapsed from the onset of symptoms to hospitalization in COVID-19 in-hospital mortality: time matters.

Background: COVID-19 shows different clinical and pathophysiological stages over time. The effect of days elapsed from the onset of symptoms (DEOS) to hospitalization on COVID-19 prognostic factors remains uncertain. We analyzed the impact on mortality of DEOS to hospitalization and how other independent prognostic factors perform when taking this time elapsed into account.

Choroidal Vascularity Index versus Choroidal Thickness as Biomarkers of Acute Central Serous Chorioretinopathy.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) versus choroidal thickness (CT) as biomarkers in acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR).

Methods: In this multicenter retrospective, cross-sectional, noninterventional study carried out at Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda University Hospital, Madrid, Spain; Jules-Gonin, Lausanne, Switzerland; and Pittsburg University, USA. 40 eyes from 40 patients with acute CSCR, 40 eyes from 40 patients with keratoconus (KC), and 40 eyes from 40 healthy patients were included.

Short-course empiric antibiotic therapy for possible early-onset sepsis in the NICU.

Objective: On 2/2019, the Neonatal Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Nationwide Children's Hospital recommended reducing empirical antibiotic therapy for early-onset sepsis (EOS) from 48 to 24 hours with a TIME-OUT. We describe our experience with this guideline and assess its safety.

Methods: Retrospective review of newborns evaluated for possible EOS at 6 NICUs from 12/2018-7/2019.

Effect of the Early Combination of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and High-Flow Nasal Cannula on Mortality and Intubation Rates in Patients With COVID-19 and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. The DUOCOVID Study.

Introduction: Non invasive respiratory support (NIRS) is useful for treating acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) secondary to COVID-19, mainly in mild-moderate stages. Although continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) seems superior to other NIRS, prolonged periods of use and poor adaptation may contribute to its failure. The combination of CPAP sessions and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) breaks could improve comfort and keep respiratory mechanics stable without reducing the benefits of positive airway pressure (PAP).

Objectives: The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ustekinumab in patients with CD refractory or intolerant to conventional therapy and without previous exposure to biological drugs.

Robotic surgery for locally advanced T4 rectal cancer: feasibility and oncological quality.

For T4 rectal tumours and local recurrences (LR) of rectal cancer, a radical resection beyond TME, sometimes by multi-visceral resection, is important to obtain safe margins and improve survival. The use of the laparoscopic approach (LA) for these cases is still controversial and associated with a high rate of conversion. However, robotic surgery might offer some advantages that can overcome some of the limitations of LA.

Nosocomial COVID-19: A Nationwide Spanish Study.

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 is a highly contagious virus, and despite professionals' best efforts, nosocomial COVID-19 (NC) infections have been reported. Methods: This is a nationwide, retrospective, multicenter, observational study that analyzed patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 in 150 Spanish hospitals (SEMI-COVID-19 Registry) from March 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021.

Expert consensus of the Spanish Society of Pathology and the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology on the determination of biomarkers in pancreatic and biliary tract cancer.

Pancreatic cancer and biliary tract cancer have a poor prognosis. In recent years, the development of new diagnostic techniques has enabled the identification of the main genetic alterations involved in the development of these tumours. Multiple studies have assessed the ability to predict response to treatment of certain biomarkers, such as BRCA in pancreatic cancer, IDH1 or FGFR2 in biliary tract cancer and microsatellite instability or NTRK fusions in an agnostic tumour fashion.

48-Week effectiveness and tolerability of dolutegravir (DTG) + lamivudine (3TC) in antiretroviral-naïve adults living with HIV: A multicenter real-life cohort.
