Background: Genetic and genomic literacy is pivotal in empowering cancer patients and citizens to navigate the complexities of omics sciences, resolve misconceptions surrounding clinical research and genetic/genomic testing, and make informed decisions about their health. In a fast-evolving scenario where routine testing has become widespread in healthcare, this scoping review sought to pinpoint existing gaps in literacy and understanding among cancer patients and the general public regarding genetics and genomics.

Methods: Adhering to the PRISMA framework, the review included 43 studies published between January 2018 and June 2024, which evaluated the understanding of genetics and genomics among cancer patients, caregivers, and citizens.

Obesity has emerged as a global epidemic with far-reaching health complications, including its role as an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Increasing evidence suggests that obesity contributes to CKD through multiple mechanisms, including chronic inflammation, hemodynamic alterations, insulin resistance, and lipid accumulation. These processes can culminate in histopathological changes collectively referred to as obesity-related glomerulopathy (ORG).

EBUS-TBNA is the most common interventional pulmonology procedure performed globally and remains the cornerstone of the diagnosis and staging not only of lung cancer but also for other neoplastic, inflammatory, and infective pathologies of the mediastinum. Infective complications of EBUS-TBNA are underreported in the literature, but the constantly rising incidence of lung cancer is leading to an increasing number of EBUS-TBNA procedures and, therefore, to a significant number of infective complications, even 4 weeks following the procedure. In this review we attempt to summarize the risk factors related to these infective complications, along with useful biomarkers that can be used to identify patients that might develop infective complications, to facilitate the prediction or even prompt treatment of these.

The fast detection of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) adulteration with poorer quality and lower price vegetable oils is important for the protection of consumers and the market of olive oil from fraudulent activities, the latter exhibiting an increasing trend worldwide during the last few years. In this work, two optical spectroscopic techniques, namely, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, are employed and are assessed for EVOO adulteration detection, using the same set of olive oil samples. In total, 184 samples were studied, including 40 EVOOs and 144 binary mixtures with pomace, soybean, corn, and sunflower oils, at various concentrations (ranging from 10 to 90% /).

The abundant yet underutilized olive leaves, a renewable by-product of olive cultivation, offer untapped potential for producing high-value bioactive compounds, notably oleacein. Existing extraction methods are often inefficient, yielding low quantities of oleacein due to enzymatic degradation of its precursor, oleuropein, during conventional processing and storage. This study aimed to overcome these limitations by exploring a novel methodology based on freeze-drying, to facilitate the in situ enzymatic biotransformation of oleuropein into oleacein directly within the plant matrix.

Virgin avocado oil (VAO), treasured for its nutritional and sensory properties, is susceptible to oxidation. To improve its oxidative stability, the feasibility of enrichment with antioxidants from avocado or olive-processing by-products via ultrasound-assisted maceration was explored. Dried, milled avocado (AL), olive leaves (OL), or olive pomace (OP) were ultrasound-macerated with laboratory-extracted VAO at 5, 10, and 20% levels.

The chemical composition and biological activity of and are scarcely investigated. In this study, the nutritional and chemical profiles of and , considering their different morphological parts (leaves, fruits and roots), were assessed together with their antioxidant and antibacterial potential. Our results showed that carbohydrates are the major macronutrients in both species (above 62 g/100 g dry weight-DW).

Background: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare connective tissue disease associated with rapidly evolving interstitial lung disease (ILD), driving its mortality. Specific imaging-based biomarkers associated with the evolution of lung disease are needed to help predict and quantify ILD.

Methods: We evaluated the potential of an automated ILD quantification system (icolung) from chest CT scans, to help in quantification and prediction of ILD progression in SSc-ILD.

NONAN GaitPrint: An IMU gait database of healthy older adults.

Sci Data

January 2025

Division of Biomechanics and Research Development, Department of Biomechanics, and Center for Research in Human Movement Variability, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, NE, 68182, USA.

The continued effort to study gait kinematics and the increased interest in identifying individuals based on their gait patterns could be strengthened by the inclusion of data from older groups. To address this need and complement our previous database on healthy young adults, we present an addition to the Nonlinear Analysis Core (NONAN) GaitPrint database. We offer full-body inertial measurement data during self-paced overground walking on a 200 m indoor track of 41 older adults (56 + years old; 20 men and 21 women; age: 64.

University of Staffordshire, Leek Road, Stoke on Trent ST4 2DF, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

To accurately examine and compare Digitally Captured Signature data, the provided data channels (X, Y, F and T) need to be expressed in comparable units. The Force channel data is routinely expressed in unnormalized Pressure Levels hindering the accurate comparison between data collected from different devices. The normalization method using the Zeta Function is used to calibrate and calculate the Zeta Functions of the Wacom DTU1141b.

Investigating the application of novel filling materials in Vertical Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands for the treatment of anaerobic effluents originating from domestic wastewater.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Sanitary Engineering Laboratory, Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, 9 Iroon Polytechniou St., Zographou Campus, 15773, Athens, Greece.

Vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands (VSSF CWs) were employed to investigate the use of biochar that could be produced with local agricultural biomass through pyrolysis, recycled glass from local recycling companies and gel beads with decreased packing volume and shipping cost as substrate alternatives to sand. The materials were assessed in terms of granulometry, porosity, adsorption capacity and hydraulic conductivity and were used for the treatment of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, treating domestic wastewater, effluent. Granulometry was a major factor impacting TSS removal that ranged from 81% ± 10% to 97% ± 2%.
