Expression of CD2, CD25 and/or CD30 in extracutaneous mast cells (MC) is a minor diagnostic criterion for systemic mastocytosis (SM) in the classification of the World Health Organization and International Consensus Classification. So far, it remains unknown whether expression of these antigens on MC is of prognostic significance in SM. We performed a retrospective multi-center study of patients with SM using the data set of the registry of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis, including 5034 patients with various MC disorders.

The hydrothermal synthesis is presented of copper-doped carbon dots (Cu-CDs) from citric acid, urea, and copper chloride, resulting in blue-fluorescent particles with stable emission at 438 nm when excited at 340 nm. Through comprehensive spectroscopic and microscopic characterization (FTIR, XPS, UV, and HRTEM), the Cu-CDs demonstrated remarkable stability across varying pH levels, ionic strengths, temperatures, and UV exposure. Notably, Cu-CDs exhibit ultra-sensitive and selective detection of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] ions in aqueous environments driven by fluorescence quenching.

Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) mediated RNA interference (RNAi) is a tool in functional gene study and pest control. However, RNAi efficiency in Lepidoptera is low compared to the RNAi sensitive Coleoptera. Previous studies on RNAi in the silkworm Bombyx mori, the lepidopteran model insect, were performed by injection only.

Objective: Half of re-interventions after fenestrated and branched endovascular aortic repair (FB-EVAR) are target vessel related. Regarding bridging stent choice, existing data are controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the performance of Advanta V12/iCAST as bridging stent in FB-EVAR.

Background: The currently approved frontline treatments for diffuse pleural mesothelioma (DPM) are ipilimumab-nivolumab or platinum-pemetrexed. The addition of bevacizumab to chemotherapy improves overall survival (OS). While single-agent immunotherapy or chemotherapy-immunotherapy combinations are superior to chemotherapy monotherapy, there is a potential for synergistic triple combination of chemotherapy, bevacizumab, and immunotherapy.

Objectives: To develop a predictive score for the prediction of successful endovascular crossing in femoropopliteal artery chronic total occlusions (CTOs).

Methods: In this retrospective study, 84 patients were divided 70%:30% into a training and a testing cohort. Parameters such as cap morphology, side branches, bridging collaterals, flush occlusion, and length were derived from preprocedural CT angiography.

Tunnel stability is a critical factor in complex geological conditions, particularly in rock masses with steeply dipping layers. Among widely used methods, the Convergence-Confinement Method (CCM), a prevalent two-dimensional (2D) approach, effectively captures the relaxation process preceding support installation. However, most studies focus on homogeneous or horizontally layered rock masses, often overlooking the influence of steeply dipping, and layered geological formations.

Purpose: We performed a scoping review to explore if ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence platform, can play a significant role in anatomy education.

Methods: PubMed, SCOPUS, ERIC and Cochrane databases were searched for articles which included anatomical questions asked to ChatGPT. From each article, we extracted the following data: authors, type of study (qualitative or quantitative), presence or not of comparison of ChatGPT with other platforms or humans, type of questions asked to ChatGPT and evaluation of the answers to these questions.

Magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia (MNH) emerges as a promising therapeutic strategy for cancer treatment, leveraging alternating magnetic fields (AMFs) to induce localized heating through magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). However, the interaction of AMFs with biological tissues leads to non-specific heating caused by eddy currents, triggering thermoregulatory responses and complex thermal gradients throughout the body of the patient. While previous studies have implemented the Atkinson-Brezovich limit to mitigate potential harm, recent research underscores discrepancies between this threshold and clinical outcomes, necessitating a re-evaluation of this safety limit.

Several human disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), are characterized by the aberrant formation of amyloid fibrils. In many cases, the amyloid core is flanked by disordered regions, known as fuzzy coat. The structural properties of fuzzy coats, and their interactions with their environments, however, have not been fully described to date.

Aim: Romania is currently facing a prolonged measles outbreak. The aim of the study was to analyse the circulating human measles virus (HMV) strains by combining whole genome sequencing (WGS) with phylogenetic analysis, with a focus on the haemagglutinin gene.

Methods: We conducted an observational study in the first five months of 2024, in which 168 patients diagnosed with measles were randomly included.

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the enhanced efficiency of combined therapeutic strategies for the treatment of growing tumors, based on computational experiments of a continuous-level modeling framework. In particular, the tumor growth is simulated within a host tissue and treated as a multiphase fluid, with each cellular species considered as a distinct fluid phase. Our model integrates the impact of chemical species on tumor dynamics, and we model -through reaction-diffusion equations- the spatio-temporal evolution of oxygen, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and chemotherapeutic agents.

High Resolution-Magic Angle Spinning (HR-MAS) solid-state NMR spectroscopy is finding increasing application in the analysis of solid foods, bypassing the need for complicated solvent extraction procedures. In the present protocol, we report a simple analytical approach based on HR-MAS NMR spectroscopy for the phenolic profiling of olive fruits, flesh, or skin. This approach allows the facile characterization of phenolic compounds in olive fruits cultivated for extra-virgin olive oil production as a function of maturation and variety, in addition to processing technology for table olives.

Advanced LC-IMS-MS Protocol for Holistic Metabolite Analysis in Wine and Grape Samples.

Methods Mol Biol

January 2025

Department of Food Quality and Nutrition, Research and Innovation Center, Fondazione Edmund Mach, San Michele all'Adige, Italy.

The final aim of metabolomics is the comprehensive and holistic study of the metabolome in biological samples. Therefore, the use of instruments that enable the analysis of metabolites belonging to various chemical classes in a wide range of concentrations is essential, without compromising on robustness, resolution, sensitivity, specificity, and metabolite annotation. These characteristics are crucial for the analysis of very complex samples, such as wine, whose metabolome is the result of the sum of metabolites derived from grapes, yeast(s), bacteria(s), and chemical or physical modification during winemaking.

HILIC-MS/MS Multi-targeted Method for Metabolomics Applications.

Methods Mol Biol

January 2025

Biomic Auth, Bioanalysis and Omics Laboratory, Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Metabolomics aims at identification and quantitation of key end point metabolites, basically polar, in order to study changes in biochemical activities in response to pathophysiological stimuli or genetic modifications. Targeted profiling assays enjoying a growing popularity over the last years with LC-MS/MS as a powerful tool for development of such (semi-)quantitative methods for a large number of metabolites. Here we describe a method for absolute quantitation of ca.

The gut's symbiome, a hidden metabolic organ, has gained scientific interest for its crucial role in human health. Acting as a biochemical factory, the gut microbiome produces numerous small molecules that significantly impact host metabolism. Metabolic profiling facilitates the exploration of its influence on human health and disease through the symbiotic relationship.

Metabolic profiling performed using untargeted metabolomics of different, complex biological samples aims to apply agnostic/holistic, hypothesis-free, analysis of the small molecules that are present in the analyzed sample. This approach has been the center of major investments and dedicated efforts from the research community for many years. However, limitations and challenges remain, particularly with regard to the validation and the quality of the obtained results.
