Background: Anti-angiogenic agents, such as nintedanib and ramucirumab, when combined with docetaxel, are subsequent treatment options in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have failed on first-line chemotherapy or immunochemotherapy. However, to date, there are no validated predictive biomarkers for efficacy of anti-angiogenic therapies in this setting. The aim of this study was to explore whether genetic or genomic markers, alone or combined with clinical covariates, could be used to predict overall survival (OS) in patients with NSCLC who are eligible for treatment with nintedanib plus docetaxel.

The consequences of climate change, accelerated by anthropogenic activities, have different effects on different ecosystems, and the severity of these effects is predicted to increase in the near future. The number of studies investigating how forest ecosystems respond to these changes is increasing. However, there remains a significant gap in research concerning how saproxylic organisms-one of the key contributors to the healthy functioning of these fragile ecosystems-will respond to the consequences of climate change.

The U4 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) forms a duplex with the U6 snRNA and, together with U5 and ~30 proteins, is part of the U4/U6.U5 tri-snRNP complex, located at the core of the major spliceosome. Recently, recurrent variants in the U4 RNA, transcribed from the gene, and in at least two other genes were discovered to cause neurodevelopmental disorder.

The study focused on converting tea bag waste into strong fluorescence carbon quantum dots (TBW-CQDs) for the detection of acrylamide in drinking water, antimicrobial activity, and photocatalytic degradation. The TBW-CQDs exhibited blue luminescence and maximum absorbance at 287 nm under UV light and distinctive fluorescence emission and excitation wavelengths at 425 nm and 287 nm, respectively. TBW-CQDs revealed a particle size of 8.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the spinal cord is relevant for studying sensation, movement, and autonomic function. Preprocessing of spinal cord fMRI data involves segmentation of the spinal cord on gradient-echo echo planar imaging (EPI) images. Current automated segmentation methods do not work well on these data, due to the low spatial resolution, susceptibility artifacts causing distortions and signal drop-out, ghosting, and motion-related artifacts.

Background & Aims: Biliary abnormalities in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and interface hepatitis in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) occur frequently, and misinterpretation may lead to therapeutic mistakes with a negative impact on patients. This study investigates the use of a deep learning (DL)-based pipeline for the diagnosis of AIH and PBC to aid differential diagnosis.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter study across six European referral centers, and built a library of digitized liver biopsy slides dating from 1997 to 2023.

Water saturation plays a vital role in calculating the volume of hydrocarbon in reservoirs and defining the net pay. It is also essential for designing the well completion. Innacurate water saturation calculation can lead to poor decision-making, significantly affecting the reservoir's development and production, potentially resulting in reduced hydrocarbon oil recovery.

Transfusion of blood products is a common lifesaving medical procedure in clinical practice. However, it poses the risk of potential adverse reactions for the recipient. Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host-disease (TA-GVHD) is a rare adverse event, fatal in >90% of cases.

Background: Storage of packed red blood cells (RBCs) for transfusion leads to biochemical and morphological changes, increasing hemolysis risk. Urate levels in blood bags at donation contribute to the molecular heterogeneity and hemolytic propensity of stored RBCs. However, studies to date have been underpowered to investigate at scale the contribution of donor demographics and genetics to the heterogeneity in urate levels across donations.

Trajectory of Cardiogenic Dementia: A New Perspective.

J Cell Mol Med

January 2025

Department of Research & Development, AFNP Med, Wien, Austria.

The functions of the heart and brain are closely linked and essential to support human life by the heart-brain axis, which is a complex interconnection between the heart and brain. Also, cardiac function and cerebral blood flow regulate the brain's metabolism and function. Therefore, deterioration of cardiac function may affect cognitive function and may increase the risk of dementia.

Objective: Neurosurgical care is difficult to access in many scenarios. Aeromedical evacuation of acutely unwell neurosurgical patients from remote, isolated or poorly equipped locations can be considered. This article aims to provide a framework of logistical factors which deserve special consideration in the preparation of these patients for transfer.

For over a century, radiotherapy has revolutionised cancer treatment. Technological advancements aim to deliver high doses to tumours with increased precision while minimising off-target effects to organs at risk. Despite advancements such as image-guided, high-precision radiotherapy delivery, long-term toxic effects on healthy tissues remain a great clinical challenge.

Osteogenesis with impact-loading exercise is often assessed by the extra bone growth induced in the loaded arm of tennis players. We used PRISMA to explore % bone mineral content (BMC) and area (BA) asymmetry in players 8-30 years according to weekly training hours, age, sex, maturity, and bone segment. Proper statistics for 70 groups were extracted by two reviewers from 18 eligible studies of low risk of bias (< 35, STROBE) and good quality (> 70%).

Curating global datasets of structural linguistic features for independence.

Sci Data

Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of Language Evolution (ISLE), University of Zurich, Zürich, Switzerland.

The increasing availability of cross-linguistic databases dedicated to documenting morphosyntactic, lexical and phonological features has proliferated the use of such data for studies on language evolution and human history. However, most of these databases were not designed to ensure independence of features, such that it is not valid to jointly use all their features in large-scale statistical analyses assuming independence of inputs. Here, we curate published data from five large linguistic databases to generate two global-scale cross-linguistic datasets: GBI (from the Grambank dataset), and TLI (using inputs from the World Atlas of Language Structures, AUTOTYP, PHOIBLE and Lexibank).

For patients with high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) for whom bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) treatment has failed, bladder preservation is a high priority. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have shown promise, but systemic administration is associated with substantial toxicity. In this single-arm phase 2 study, 30 patients with NMIBC after BCG failure were treated with intravesical durvalumab every 6 wk.

The radioactive isotope of hydrogen, known as tritium (H), is very often used as a dating tool in hydrogeological studies, since it enters the water cycle as part of the water molecule through precipitation. However, the assessment of groundwater transit times and recharge often requires knowing the local historical records of tritium levels in precipitation during the previous seven decades, or the tritium in precipitation (TIP) time series. Here, we compiled all tritium records in precipitation in Greece, with the majority of stations showing sporadic measurements, with the aim of reconstructing a TIP for groundwater dating purposes.
