There is limited literature on the roles and tasks conducted by oncology social workers (OSW) who work with cancer patients in inpatient units. The purpose of this study was to delineate the roles reported to be significant to practice among OSWs who practice in inpatient settings and to identify the domains into which these roles fall. The data used in this secondary data analysis were collected in a large national study of OSWs to delineate the roles and tasks across all cancer settings.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to identify clinical laboratory markers associated with postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) due to a lack of validated biomarkers.
  • Conducted with 10,094 participants across 83 sites, the research compared laboratory measures between those with and without prior SARS-CoV-2 infection and analyzed the impact of PASC indices on these measures.
  • Results showed participants with prior infection had lower platelet counts and higher levels of hemoglobin A and urinary albumin-creatinine ratio, but these differences were minor and not significant among those with PASC.

The current study explored the intelligibility and acceptability ratings of dysarthric speakers with African American English (AAE) and General American English (GAE) dialects by listeners who identify as GAE or AAE speakers, as well as listener ability to identify dialect in dysarthric speech. Eighty-six listeners rated the intelligibility and acceptability of sentences extracted from a passage read by speakers with dysarthria. Samples were used from the Atlanta Motor Speech Disorders Corpus and ratings were collected via self-report.

Background: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a potentially devastating condition with elevated early mortality rates, poor functional outcomes, and high costs of care. Standard of care involves intensive supportive therapy to prevent secondary injury. To date, there is no randomized control study demonstrating benefit of early evacuation of supratentorial ICH.

Background: Health disparities in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) individuals are well documented, and there is a dearth of primary care providers (PCPs) with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to sensitively care for this diverse population.

Purpose: The purpose of this research study was to ask LGBTQ+ patients what qualities they prefer in their PCP. The findings will be used to better prepare nurse practitioners (NPs) to care for this diverse community and inform the training of future NPs to provide patient-centered care to LGBTQ+ individuals.

Background: Pelvic fracture urethral injury (PFUI) occurs in up to 10% of pelvic fractures. There is mixed evidence supporting early endoscopic urethral realignment (EUR) over suprapubic tube (SPT) placement and delayed urethroplasty. Some studies show decreased urethral obstruction with EUR, while others show few differences.

Context: COVID-19 morbidity and mortality are increased in type 1 diabetes (T1D), but few data focus on age-based outcomes.

Objective: This work aimed to quantify the risk for COVID-19-related hospitalization and adverse outcomes by age in people with T1D.

Methods: For this observational, multisite, cross-sectional study of patients with T1D and laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from 56 clinical sites in the United States, data were collected from April 2020 to March 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • The College of American Pathologists has been providing guidelines for cancer pathology reporting for over 35 years, which help standardize the process for pathologists.
  • The integration of these guidelines into electronic health records and lab systems allows pathologists to streamline reporting and ensures the data is collected in a consistent format for cancer surveillance.
  • The paper discusses the history and current use of these cancer reporting tools, while also exploring future plans to enhance their incorporation into various healthcare and research workflows.

Objective: Since the initiation of an adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program at our institution, the program has managed well over 200 patients with ECMO in a 3-year time frame. While there is a plethora of research evaluating ECMO for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), few studies have evaluated the impact that ventilator management after cannulation might have on outcomes. We hypothesized that failure to properly protect the lungs after cannulation would lead to higher mortality.

Objective: To assess the contemporary incidence of cancers using American Samoa as a learning set for insights into similar populations.

Methods: A retrospective observational analysis of de-identified data held in public-access databases (2004-2014) and data on uterine cancer from a hospital, both in American Samoa (2015-2016).

Results: There were 341 new cases of cancer in 2004-2014 (111 per 100 000 women/year), including breast (20.

Significant morbidity, mortality, and increased healthcare costs of up to 20.1 billion dollars annually occur as a result of poorly executed patient care transitions. The critical role of providers in ensuring patient safety at discharge requires provider knowledge of required care transitions processes to ensure optimal execution of transitions of care.

Oxandrolone has proven benefits in thermal burn injury and has become a standard of care. Transaminitis is the most frequent side effect of oxandrolone use, although no risk factors have been identified that increase the risk of transaminitis. The objective was to evaluate the frequency of transaminitis while on oxandrolone and to identify risk factors leading to an increased risk of transaminitis in adult burn patients.
