To develop applicable and susceptible models to evaluate the toxicity of nanoparticles, the antimicrobial effects of CuO nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) on various Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) strains (wild type, single-gene-deleted mutants, and multiple-gene-deleted mutants) were determined and compared. Further experiments were also conducted to analyze the mechanisms associated with toxicity using copper salt, bulk CuO (bCuO), carbon-shelled copper nanoparticles (C/Cu-NPs), and carbon nanoparticles (C-NPs) for comparisons.

Bacillus mojavensis B0621A was isolated from the mantle of a pearl oyster Pinctada martensii collected from South China Sea. Semi-purified surfactins (225 mg L(-1)) were obtained by acid precipitation and vacuum flash chromatography. The component of the semi-purified surfactins was preliminarily analyzed by liquid chromatography mass spectrometer system, and the results showed that all these surfactins could be a group of homologues.

Sediments in eight types of mangroves were sampled in the Leizhou Peninsula. Heavy metals were analyzed to investigate the effects on metal distribution of mangrove communities, to evaluate contamination levels, identify sources and relationships between the two. Results showed that mangrove communities have effects on most heavy metal distributions in sediments, especially in the sediment with shrub communities of Aegiceras corniculatum where the contents of many metals are highest.

The ornamental peach cultivar 'Hongbaihuatao (HBH)' can simultaneously bear pink, red, and variegated flowers on a single tree. Anthocyanin content in pink flowers is extremely low, being only 10% that of a red flower. Surprisingly, the expression of anthocyanin structural and potential regulatory genes in white flowers was not significantly lower than that in both pink and red flowers.

The Kathmandu Valley in the foothills of the Himalayas, where the capital city of Nepal is located, has one of the most serious air pollution problems in the world. In this study, total suspended particle (TSP) samples collected over a year (April 2013-March 2014) in the Kathmandu Valley were analyzed for determining the concentrations of 15 priority particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The TSP and PAH concentrations were extremely high, with annual average concentration being 199±124μg/m(3) and 155±130ng/m(3), respectively, which are comparable to those observed in Asian cities such as Beijing and Delhi.

5-Hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), a modified form of cytosine that is considered the sixth nucleobase in DNA, has been detected in mammals and is believed to play an important role in gene regulation. In this study, 5hmC modification was detected in rice by employing a dot-blot assay, and its levels was further quantified in DNA from different rice tissues using liquid chromatography-multistage mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS/MS). The specific locations of the double bonds in linear olefins can facilitate olefin catalytic synthetic reactions to improve the quality of target olefin products. We developed a simple and efficient approach based on single photon ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SPI-TOFMS) combined with online ozonolysis to identify and quantify the linear olefin double bond positional isomers. The online ozonolysis cleaved the olefins at the double bond positions that led to formation of corresponding characteristic aldehydes.

We evaluated the influence of the biodegradable chelant ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS) on plant uptake of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and Cu by corn from electronic waste (e-waste)-contaminated soil. The highest concentration and highest total uptake of Cu in corn were observed in the treatment with 5 mM EDDS, which resulted in a 4-fold increase of the Cu translocation factor (C(shoot)/C(root)) compared to the control. Spatially resolved surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SRSPS) was employed to obtain direct evidence for highly anisotropic photogenerated charge separation on different facets of a single BiVO4 photocatalyst. Through the controlled synthesis of a single crystal with preferentially exposed {010} facets, highly anisotropic photogenerated hole transfer to the {011} facet of single BiVO4 crystals was observed. The surface photovoltage signal intensity on the {011} facet was 70 times stronger than that on the {010} facets.

Understanding the plant-pest interaction under warming with grazing conditions is critical to predict the response of alpine meadow to future climate change. We investigated the effects of experimental warming and grazing on the interaction between plants and the grassland caterpillar Gynaephora menyuanensis in an alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau in 2010 and 2011. Our results showed that grazing significantly increased nitrogen concentration in graminoids and sward openness with a lower sward height, sward coverage, and plant litter mass in the community.

Novel Phenanthrene-Degrading Bacteria Identified by DNA-Stable Isotope Probing.

Microorganisms responsible for the degradation of phenanthrene in a clean forest soil sample were identified by DNA-based stable isotope probing (SIP). The soil was artificially amended with either 12C- or 13C-labeled phenanthrene, and soil DNA was extracted on days 3, 6 and 9. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP) results revealed that the fragments of 219- and 241-bp in HaeIII digests were distributed throughout the gradient profile at three different sampling time points, and both fragments were more dominant in the heavy fractions of the samples exposed to the 13C-labeled contaminant.
