Many neuroendovascular treatments are supported by real-time anatomical and visual hemodynamic assessments through digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Here we used DSA in a single-center prospective randomized crossover study to assess the intracranial hemodynamics of patients undergoing coiling for cerebral aneurysm (n = 15) during sevoflurane- and propofol-based anesthesia. Color-coded DSA was used to define time to peak density of contrast medium (TTP) at several intravascular regions of interest (ROIs).

Aims: To estimate the impact of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents on visual impairment and blindness avoided in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) and on associated patient and caregiver productivity loss in Japan.
Methods: This study compared the impact of current care (estimated at 53.8% utilization of anti-VEGF agents using current data) with that of hypothetical care (characterized by a higher utilization of anti-VEGF agents [80.

OBJECTIVEPrevious Japanese Leksell Gamma Knife Society studies (JLGK0901) demonstrated the noninferiority of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) alone as the initial treatment for patients with 5-10 brain metastases (BMs) compared with those with 2-4 BMs in terms of overall survival and most secondary endpoints. The authors studied the aforementioned treatment outcomes in a subset of patients with BMs from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).METHODSPatients with initially diagnosed BMs treated with SRS alone were enrolled in this prospective observational study.

In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), low body mass index (BMI) is associated with high mortality. This relationship in emergently hospitalized CKD patients is unknown. We investigated the association between obesity and short-term mortality in emergently admitted patients with dialysis-independent CKD (DI-CKD) with and without infection.

Objective: To investigate prospectively the prevalence of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and the pathologic features of the placenta in cases of fetal growth restriction (FGR).
Study Design: Forty-eight pregnant women who were diagnosed with FGR during pregnancy were enrolled for 15 months. Maternal CMV serologic tests, pathologic examinations of the placenta, and newborn urinary CMV-DNA polymerase chain reaction tests were performed in all the cases.

Tonotopy is an essential functional organization in the mammalian auditory cortex, and its source in the primary auditory cortex (A1) is the incoming frequency-related topographical projections from the ventral division of the medial geniculate body (MGv). However, circuits that relay this functional organization to higher-order regions such as the secondary auditory field (A2) have yet to be identified. Here, we discovered a new pathway that projects directly from MGv to A2 in mice.

Alveolar bone is not spontaneously regenerated following trauma or periodontitis. We previously proposed an animal model for new alveolar bone regeneration therapy based on the non-viral BMP-2/7 gene expression vector and in vivo electroporation, which induced the formation of new alveolar bone over the course of a week. Here, we analysed alveolar bone during a period of three weeks following gene transfer to periodontal tissue.

Background: While the prevalence of short QT syndrome (SQTS) in children and adolescents is low, early detection is important because SQTS can cause life-threatening arrhythmia. The aim of this study was to determine the tentative screening criteria for short QT interval in children and adolescents.
Methods and results: A total of 75,040 digitally stored electrocardiograms (ECG) of participants in a school-based ECG screening program were obtained between 2009 and 2013 in Kagoshima, Japan.

Embigin, a transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily, is involved in prostate and mammary gland development. As embigin's roles in cancer remain elusive, we studied its biological functions and interaction with extracellular S100A4 in prostate cancer progression. We found by a pull-down assay that embigin is a novel receptor for S100A4, which is one of the vital cancer microenvironment milleu.

Healthcare economics concerns with the way in which to distribute and allocate scarce resources that result in maximized outcome. When the expenditure on cancer medicine was examined using the macro data open to the public, it was found to have increased in parallel with the National Medical Care Expenditure. More specifically, the growth rates of the two showed a similar trend in the five years from 2011 to 2015.

Background: Leptospira interrogans is a pathogenic, spirochetal bacterium that is responsible for leptospirosis, an emerging worldwide zoonosis. Leptospires colonize the renal proximal tubules and chronically infect the kidney. Live bacteria are excreted into urine, contaminating the environment.

Aim: The Friedewald equation is the standard method for estimating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels [LDL-C(F)] and fixes the ratio of triglyceride (TG) to very LDL-C at 5. However, this has been reported to underestimate LDL-C, particularly in patients with LDL-C <70 mg/dL. A novel method for LDL-C estimation [LDL-C(M)] using an adjustable factor instead of a fixed value of 5 has recently been proposed.

A 32-year-old woman showed transient central type facial nerve palsy and bulbar symptoms. Brain MRI revealed high intensity signals in the cerebral white matter, splenium of corpus callosum, and posterior limb of internal capsule. Two elder brothers of the patient had distal dominant peripheral neuropathies in four limbs.

Objective: To assess the performance of the Japanese version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (J-PHQ-9) for depression in primary care.
Methods: Participants in both phases completed the J-PHQ-9, while patients in the second phase also completed the SF-8 (the short form for the health-related QOL scale SF-36). Subjects (n = 284; male = 107, female = 177) had to return the questionnaires to their health care professional within 48 hours and undergo a diagnostic evaluation interview based on the Japanese version of M.

Purpose: To determine whether human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells (iPS-RPE) can suppress natural killer (NK) cell activation.
Methods: iPS-RPE cells were cocultured with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) or purified NK cells from healthy donors after stimulation with cytokines. To confirm expression of NK cell-specific markers, flow cytometry and quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) were performed.

We describe a novel immuno-scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique that combines both Tokuyasu's cryosectioning and section SEM methods. In this technique, semithin cryosections, cut according to the Tokuyasu method, were adhered to glass microscope slides, immunostained for bio-molecules of interest and observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The same sections were subsequently embedded in epoxy resin and ultrathin sections were cut on an ultramicrotome.

Purpose: Abnormalities of lower extremity alignment (LEA) in recurrent patella dislocation (RPD) have been studied mostly by two-dimensional (2D) procedures leaving three-dimensional (3D) factors unknown. This study aimed to three-dimensionally examine risk factors for RPD in lower extremity alignment under the weight-bearing conditions.
Methods: The alignment of 21 limbs in 15 RPD subjects was compared to the alignment of 24 limbs of 12 healthy young control subjects by an our previously reported 2D-3D image-matching technique.

Antibody-mediated rejection is characterized by donor-specific antibody produced by B cells. However, to our knowledge, B cell invasion and antibody in the inflamed retina after transplantation of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells has not been reported. To determine if RPE transplantation could be performed using allografts, we established in vivo immune rejection models with induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-RPE allografts and determined whether RPE-specific antibody could be detected in these models.

Objective: Biallelic mutations cause congenital hypothyroidism (CH). Serum TSH levels of monoallelic mutation carriers range from normal to mildly elevated, and thus the size of its effect remains unclear. The objectives were to examine the association between monoallelic mutations and positivity at newborn screening (NBS) for CH, and to test whether the association was modified by another genetic factor.
