Recent studies have examined the feedback pathway from the amygdala to the auditory cortex in conjunction with the feedforward pathway from the auditory cortex to the amygdala. However, these connections have not been fully characterized. Here, to visualize the comprehensive connectivity between the auditory cortex and amygdala, we injected cholera toxin subunit b (CTB), a bidirectional tracer, into multiple subfields in the mouse auditory cortex after identifying the location of these subfields using flavoprotein fluorescence imaging.

Perceptions of Residents among Rural Communities with Medical Group Practice in Japan.

Elucidating the perceptions of residents regarding medical group practice (GP) among rural communities (GP-R) in Japan will be useful for establishing this system in such communities. A survey by questionnaire, as made by experts in rural health, was conducted in 2017. Purpose: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has been increasingly used for elderly patients with brain metastases (BMs). However, no studies based on a large sample size have been reported. To compare SRS treatment results between elderly and non-elderly patients, we performed a subset study of elderly patients using our prospectively-accumulated multi-institution study database (JLGK0901 Study, Lancet Oncol 15:387-395, 2014).

The Committee conducted a questionnaire survey among patients with diabetes, physicians, disaster medical assistance teams (DMATs), nurses, pharmacists, and nutritionists in disaster areas about the events they saw happening, the situations they found difficult to handle, and the needs that they felt required to be met during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. A total of 3,481 completed questionnaires were received.

Background: Nivolumab has demonstrated antitumor activity and manageable safety in the single-arm, phase II CheckMate 275 study in patients with unresectable locally advanced or metastatic platinum-resistant urothelial carcinoma. We report updated results of the global population and a subanalysis of Japanese patients from this study.

Methods: Patients received nivolumab 3 mg/kg intravenously every 2 weeks until progression or unacceptable toxicity.

An autopsy case of peliosis hepatis with X-linked myotubular myopathy.

This report describes the autopsy case of a 4-year-old boy who died from hepatic hemorrhage and rupture caused by peliosis hepatis with X-linked myotubular myopathy. Peliosis hepatis is characterized by multiple blood-filled cavities of various sizes in the liver, which occurs in chronic wasting disease or with the use of specific drugs. X-linked myotubular myopathy is one of the most serious types of congenital myopathies, in which an affected male infant typically presents with severe hypotonia and respiratory distress immediately after birth.

Correlation of Right Ventricular Wall Stress With Plasma B-Type Natriuretic Peptide Levels in Patients With Pulmonary Hypertension.

Background: This study was designed to investigate the relationship between right ventricular wall stress (RVWS) and plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH).

Methods and results: The 57 consecutive PH patients and 8 control subjects were enrolled. Right heart catheterization (RHC), echocardiography, and BNP measurements were performed, and RVWS and left ventricular wall stress (LVWS) were calculated with the formula based on Laplace's law.

Since metastasis accounts for the majority of cancer-associated deaths, studies on the mechanisms of metastasis are needed to establish innovative strategies for cancer treatment. We previously reported that melanoma cell adhesion molecule (MCAM) functions as a critical receptor for S100A8/A9, and binding of S100A8/A9 to MCAM results in the migration of melanoma cells to lung tissue. However, the critical role of MCAM in the original melanoma skin lesion is still not clear.

Nationwide survey of outcome in patients with extensive aganglionosis in Japan.

Purpose: Hirschsprung's disease-related short bowel syndrome (HDSBS) is characterized by aganglionosis that extends orally to 75 cm from Treitz's band. The condition is reported be associated with a high mortality rate of 50-80%. This retrospective study aimed to survey the current trends in HDSBS treatment in Japan.

Neuroplastin-β mediates S100A8/A9-induced lung cancer disseminative progression.

Compiling evidence indicates an unusual role of extracellular S100A8/A9 in cancer metastasis. S100A8/A9 secreted from either cancer cells or normal cells including epithelial and inflammatory cells stimulates cancer cells through S100A8/A9 sensor receptors in an autocrine or paracrine manner, leading to cancer cell metastatic progression. We previously reported a novel S100A8/A9 receptor, neuroplastin-β (NPTNβ), which plays a critical role in atopic dermatitis when it is highly activated in keratinocytes by an excess amount of extracellular S100A8/A9 in the inflammatory skin lesion.

Identification of dysregulated microRNAs in canine malignant melanoma.

Inhibiting aberrantly upregulated microRNAs (miR/miRNAs) has emerged as a novel focus for therapeutic intervention in human melanoma. Thus, identifying upregulated miRNAs is essential for identifying additional melanoma-associated therapeutic targets. In the present study, microarray-based miRNA profiling of canine malignant melanoma (CMM) tissue obtained from the oral cavity was performed and differential expression was confirmed by a reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR).
