Introduction: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes of preterm infants, but its effect on brain growth in preterm infants after the neonatal period is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of severe BPD on brain growth of preterm infants from term to 18 months of corrected age (CA).
Methods: Sixty-three preterm infants (42 with severe BPD and 21 without severe BPD) who underwent magnetic resonance imaging at term equivalent age (TEA) and 18 months of CA were studied by using the Infant Brain Extraction and Analysis Toolbox (iBEAT).

Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) antibody-positive dermatomyositis (DM) is characterized by amyopathic DM with interstitial lung disease (ILD). Patients with anti-MDA5 antibody-associated ILD frequently develop rapidly progression and present high mortality rate in the acute phase. Here, we established a murine model of ILD mediated by autoimmunity against MDA5.

Severe tracheal deviation detected on preoperative chest radiographs is one of the risk factors for difficult tracheal intubation and difficulty in ventilation using an endotracheal tube after tracheal intubation when managing the airway through tracheal intubation under general anesthesia. In this report, we describe the cadaver of an 81-year-old woman with marked tracheal deviation due to meandering multiple aortas. This report details the importance of anatomical knowledge in developing a detailed airway management plan.

Sudden unexpected death in the young (SUDY) is a traumatic occurrence for their family; however, information on the genetic variations associated with the condition is currently lacking. It is important to carry out postmortem genetic analyses in cases of sudden death to provide information for relatives and to allow appropriate genetic counselling and clinical follow-up. This study aimed to investigate the genetic variations associated with the occurrence of SUDY in Japan, using next-generation sequencing (NGS).

A tracheal bronchus is a congenital abnormality of the tracheobronchial tree in which a displaced or accessory bronchus arises from the trachea superior to its bifurcation. We herein report a case in which a tracheal bronchus was incidentally found after induction of general anesthesia, and we discuss the potential airway management problems that may have ensued. An 80-year-old man was scheduled for buccal mucosa resection and abdominal skin grafting for treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the left buccal mucosa.

Background: Skeletal muscle produces interleukin-6 (IL-6) during exercise as a myokine. Although IL-6 is required for skeletal muscle regeneration, its action increases the expression of myostatin and other proteins involved in muscle atrophy, resulting in skeletal muscle atrophy. In this study, we clarified the effects exercise-induced vitamin D receptor (VDR) and androgen receptor (AR) expression on IL-6 and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and

Background: Although concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) followed by durvalumab is the standard treatment for patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), only half of the patients are allowed to receive CCRT in real-world settings. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of durvalumab after radiation monotherapy for NSCLC patients who are ineligible for chemoradiotherapy.
Methods: A single-arm, prospective, open-label, multicenter phase II trial was conducted in Japan.

Background: Identifying a potentially difficult airway is crucial both in anaesthesia in the operating room (OR) and non-operation room sites. There are no guidelines or expert consensus focused on the assessment of the difficult airway before, so this expert consensus is developed to provide guidance for airway assessment, making this process more standardized and accurate to reduce airway-related complications and improve safety.
Methods: Seven members from the Airway Management Group of the Chinese Society of Anaesthesiology (CSA) met to discuss the first draft and then this was sent to 15 international experts for review, comment, and approval.

Lipid accumulation in the liver due to chronic alcohol consumption (CAC) is crucial in the development of alcohol liver disease (ALD). It is promoted by the NADH/NAD ratio increase via alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)-dependent alcohol metabolism and lipogenesis increase via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) in the liver. The transcriptional activity of PPARγ on lipogenic genes is inhibited by S-nitrosylation but activated by denitrosylation via S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR), an enzyme identical to ADH3.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by TDP-43 inclusions in the cortical and spinal motor neurons. It remains unknown whether and how pathogenic TDP-43 spreads across neural connections to progress degenerative processes in the cortico-spinal motor circuitry. Here we established novel mouse ALS models that initially induced mutant TDP-43 inclusions in specific neuronal or cell types in the motor circuits, and investigated whether TDP-43 and relevant pathological processes spread across neuronal or cellular connections.

In a few cases, postmortem computed tomography angiography (PMCTA) is effective in postmortem detection of cortical artery rupture causing subdural hematoma (SDH), which is difficult to detect at autopsy. Here, we explore the usefulness and limitations of PMCTA in detecting the sites of cortical arterial rupture for SDH. In 6 of 10 cases, extravascular leakage of contrast material at nine different places enabled PMCTA to identify cortical arterial rupture.
