Purpose Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious side effect of antiresorptive agents such as bisphosphonates (BPs) and denosumab (DMB). We investigated whether a difference exists between BP- and DMB-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Patients and methods Histological images of 30 patients with BP-related ONJ and 13 patients with DMB-related ONJ were observed using hematoxylin-eosin and cathepsin K staining.

G protein-coupled receptor class C group 5 member B (GPRC5B) is involved in extracellular glucose sensing, glucose metabolism, and insulin resistance. Many cancers require glucose at high concentrations to survive and grow. We have investigated the association between tumour GPRC5B expression and the prognosis for patients with cancer, including head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), using data from The Human Protein Atlas.

The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin and the body's primary barrier to external pathogens; however, the early epidermal immune response remains to be mechanistically understood. We show that the chemokine CXCL14, produced by epidermal keratinocytes, exhibits robust circadian fluctuations and initiates innate immunity. Clearance of the skin pathogen in nocturnal mice was associated with CXCL14 expression, which was high during subjective daytime and low at night.

Introduction: Fusobacterium nucleatum, which is involved in the development of periodontal disease and apical lesions, can be transmitted to the colon and metastasize to colorectal cancer, suggesting a link between oral and systemic diseases. We analyzed the effects of F. nucleatum on bacterial flora in the gut and surrounding organs in a rat model of apical periodontitis and analyzed the infection route to the gut and distant organs.

Introduction: Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) plays an important role in bone mineralization and has been reported to promote osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. However, there is no report about the effects of TGF-β1 on human cementoblasts. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of TGF-β1 on the proliferation and differentiation of the human cementoblast cell line (HCEM) in vitro.

Background: High levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptors (TNFRs; TNFR1 and TNFR2), markers of inflammation, have been reported as significant predictors of mortality in hemodialysis patients. Porphyromonas gingivalis is a major pathogenic bacterium involved in periodontitis, which induces systemic inflammation. We investigated the association between the abundance of P.

This study was a prospective, multicentre, cohort study on 685 patients who had undergone oncologic surgery. The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of postoperative pneumonia. The two groups were compared with respect to their background, index operation, food eaten, oral condition, contents of oral care and dental treatment, laboratory data, and bacterial flora.

Objectives: It was shown that mucosal immunity via salivary IgA may be related to the improvement of seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) symptoms, and improvement of SAR symptoms through saliva flow increase has been reported in patients using mouthguard (MG) in dental treatment. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of MG use on SAR symptom improvement and to clarify the role of saliva on SAR symptom development.
Methods: We recruited patients from the Kanagawa Dental University Hospital including 38 and 8 patients with SAR and non-SAR symptoms during two seasons from March 2017 to April 2018.

Cancer is a leading cause of death and disease worldwide, with a tremendous financial impact. Thus, the development of cost-effective novel approaches for suppressing tumor growth and progression is essential. In an attempt to identify the mechanisms responsible for tumor suppression, we screened for molecules downregulated in a cancer progression model and found that the chemokine CXCL14, also called BRAK, was the most significantly downregulated.

Background: The purpose of this study was to clarify the species of Candida that are important for the development of atrophic glossitis in xerostomia patients.
Methods: A total of 231 patients with subjective dry mouth were enrolled in the present study. Logistic regression analysis was performed to clarify the contribution of each Candida species and other variables to the development of atrophic glossitis.

Cetuximab, a monoclonal antibody against the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), has been successfully used to treat some patients with colorectal cancer and those with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). For the effective treatment, it is essential to first identify cetuximab-responsive patients. The level of EGFR expression and/or the presence of mutations in signalling molecules downstream of the EGFR pathway have been reported to be determining factors for cetuximab responsiveness in colorectal cancer patients; however, limited data have been reported for HNSCC patients.

Cancer progression involves carcinogenesis, an increase in tumour size, and metastasis. Here, we investigated the effect of overexpressed CXC chemokine ligand 14 (CXCL14) on these processes by using CXCL14/BRAK (CXCL14) transgenic (Tg) mice. The rate of AOM/DSS-induced colorectal carcinogenesis in these mice was significantly lower compared with that for isogenic wild type C57BL/6 (Wt) mice.

One approach to enhance the disinfection of root canals in endodontic treatment is ultrasonic irrigation with sodium hypochlorite. Reactive oxygen species, such as hydroxyl radical, are generated by biological defense systems to kill invading bacteria. Ultrasonic irrigation with hydrogen peroxide may be a promising option to increase hydroxyl radical generation.
