Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between changes in occlusal support (the contact of upper and lower teeth) and masticatory performance (ability to chew) over a 6-year period in older adults.
  • Researchers followed 488 participants aged 72-74, categorizing them based on their occlusal support status (complete, reduced, or collapsed) and found significant factors affecting chewing ability.
  • Results indicate that declining occlusal support is a key contributor to decreased chewing performance, emphasizing the importance of maintaining posterior occlusal support in older adults to enhance their ability to chew effectively.

Background: Repeated action or inaction toward objects changes preferences for those objects. However, it remains unclear whether such training activates approach-avoidance motivation toward the objects, which leads to actual behavior. We conducted a pre-registered online experiment to examine whether approach and avoidance tendencies were affected by the experience of having executed or withheld a button-press response to a stimulus.

Introduction Migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) are chronic diseases associated with significant socioeconomic losses and social and psychological impact (current global prevalence: 10% and 38%, respectively). Thus, they require accurate identification and classification. In clinical practice, validated screening tools able to quickly determine migraine and TTH with high sensitivity and specificity help provide an objective and multifaceted understanding of patients' headache symptoms.

Discrimination, which arose during the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak, is a global public health issue. This study aimed to provide fundamental knowledge in proposing control measures to mitigate discrimination. We focused on two psychological variables: belief in just deserts (BJD, , the belief that the infected individual deserves to be infected), a psychological factor that potentially promotes discrimination and prejudice, and human rights restrictions (HRR; , the degree of individuals' agreement with government restrictions on citizens' behavior during emergencies).

This study aimed to test Marshall's third hypothesis-that information about the death penalty hardly affects the attitude of death penalty supporters on retribution grounds-utilizing a non-American sample. Four pre-registered experiments were conducted, involving Japanese participants randomly selected from sample pools of retributivists and non-retributivists, based on their reasons for supporting the death penalty. One group received information exposure, while the other was under control conditions.

Int J Clin Oncol

December 2023

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, 2-2, Yamadaoka, Suita, Osaka, 565-0871, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Japan suspended HPV vaccination recommendations in 2013, leading to a significant decline in vaccination rates among those born from 2000 onward, but resumed catch-up vaccinations in 2022.
  • An internet survey conducted in February 2022 found that 41.6% of unvaccinated women (born 1997-2004) intended to get the catch-up vaccine, with various factors influencing their decisions, such as gynecological visit history and knowledge about cervical cancer.
  • The study concluded that vaccination intentions varied between the "vaccinated generation" and the "vaccine-suspended generation," highlighting the need for tailored recommendations from health organizations based on these differences.

Although knowledge of the functions of the gut microbiome has increased greatly over the past few decades, our understanding of the mechanisms governing its ecology and evolution remains obscure. While host genetic distance is a strong predictor of the gut microbiome in large-scale studies and captive settings, its influence has not always been evident at finer taxonomic scales, especially when considering among the recently diverged animals in natural settings. Comparing the gut microbiome of 19 populations of Japanese macaques Macaca fuscata across the Japanese archipelago, we assessed the relative roles of host genetic distance, geographic distance and dietary factors in influencing the macaque gut microbiome.

Statistical Learning of Chord-Transition Regularities in a Novel Equitempered Scale: An MMN Study.

Neurosci Lett

October 2023

Graduate School of Human Sciences, Osaka University, 1-2 Yamadaoka, Suita, Osaka 565-0871, JAPAN.

In music and language domains, it has been suggested that patterned transitions of sounds can be acquired implicitly through statistical learning. Previous studies have investigated the statistical learning of auditory regularities by recording early neural responses to a sequence of tones presented at high or low transition probabilities. However, it remains unclear whether the statistical learning of musical chord transitions is reflected in endogenous, regularity-dependent components of the event-related potential (ERP).

Throughout history, individuals believed to have extraordinary capabilities were generally highly ranked in their communities; this suggests a universal "extraordinary-dominant expectation" in human minds, which may play a key role in religious thought, even in modern societies. This study shows that 5-6-year-old children, who begin to understand real-world causalities regarding how the body and mind of human beings work, predict that individuals who exhibit extraordinary capabilities have higher social status in interactions with individuals who exhibit ordinary capabilities. In Experiment 1, we showed children two individuals achieving goals using either humanly possible or impossible methods, the latter involving simple forms of violation of intuitive psychology (knowing without seeing), physics (flying), or biology (fire breathing).
