Hundreds of experiments have examined people's ability to distinguish truths from lies. Meta-analyses suggest that the findings from larger scale experiments converge and that findings discrepant from the meta-analytic average of 54% occur in only smaller experiments. Study size (number of data points, or total number of judgments) is a joint function of the sample size and the number of judgments per research participant.

Claims to supernatural power have been used as a basis for authority in a wide range of societies, but little is known about developmental origins of the link between supernatural power and worldly authority. Here, we show that 12- to 16-month-old infants expect agents exhibiting counterintuitive capacities to win out in a two-way standoff over a contested resource. Infants watched two agents gain a reward using either physically intuitive or physically counterintuitive methods, the latter involving simple forms of levitation or teleportation.

Reciprocal interactions require memories of social exchanges; however, little is known about how we remember social partner actions, especially during childhood when we start forming peer-to-peer relationships. This study examined if the expectation-violation effect, which has been observed in adults' source memory, exists among 5-6-year-old children. Forty participants played a coin collection game where they either received or lost coins after being shown an individual with a smiling or angry expression.

A few prolific liars in Japan: Replication and the effects of Dark Triad personality traits.

PLoS One

September 2021

Department of Communication Studies, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama, United States of America.

Truth-Default Theory (TDT) predicts that across countries and cultures, a few people tell most of the lies, while a majority of people lie less frequently than average. This prediction, referred to as "a few prolific liars," is tested in Japan. The study further investigated the extent to which the Dark Triad personality traits predict the frequency of lying.

The emotion regulation mechanism of mindfulness plays an important role in the stress reduction effect. Many researchers in the fields of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience have attempted to elucidate this mechanism by documenting the cognitive processes that occur and the neural activities that characterize each process. However, previous findings have not revealed the mechanism of information propagation in the brain that achieves emotion regulation during mindfulness.

Quercetin 3,5,7,3',4'-pentamethyl ether from Kaempferia parviflora directly and effectively activates human SIRT1.

Commun Biol

February 2021

Department of Applied Biological Chemistry, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan.

Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), an NAD-dependent deacetylase, is a crucial regulator that produces multiple physiological benefits, such as the prevention of cancer and age-related diseases. SIRT1 is activated by sirtuin-activating compounds (STACs). Here, we report that quercetin 3,5,7,3',4'-pentamethyl ether (KPMF-8), a natural STAC from Thai black ginger Kaempferia parviflora, interacts with SIRT1 directly and stimulates SIRT1 activity by enhancing the binding affinity of SIRT1 with Ac-p53 peptide, a native substrate peptide without a fluorogenic moiety.

Hand choices-deciding which hand to use to reach for targets-represent continuous, daily, unconscious decisions. The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) contralateral to the selected hand is activated during a hand-choice task, and disruption of left PPC activity with a single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation prior to the execution of the motion suppresses the choice to use the right hand but not vice versa. These findings imply the involvement of either bilateral or left PPC in hand choice.
