Article Synopsis
  • Daprodustat is an oral medication designed to stimulate red blood cell production by preventing the breakdown of a protein that helps respond to low oxygen levels; its safety and effectiveness were evaluated in a year-long study involving Japanese patients with anemia due to chronic kidney disease (CKD).
  • The study involved 299 patients who were not on dialysis and compared daprodustat with another treatment, CERA, with adjustments made to dosages based on patients' hemoglobin levels.
  • Results showed that the mean hemoglobin levels after the 40-52 week period were similar for both treatments, with daprodustat at 12.0 g/dL and CERA at 11.9 g/dL, and both treatments

November 2021

Makoto Tanaka, PhD, RN, PHN, Professor, Department of Critical and Invasive-Palliative Care Nursing, Graduate School of Health Care Sciences, Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU), Tokyo, Japan.

The Morisky Medication Adherence Scale is a clinically relevant tool used to evaluate medication adherence. In the current study, the validity and reliability of a Japanese version of the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale and factors related to low adherence were investigated in patients with ulcerative colitis. The original English version was translated into Japanese and then 3 institutions in Japan administered that Japanese version to 428 patients taking medication.

Health Services Research and Development Center, University of Tsukuba, 1-1-1 Tenno-dai, Tsukuba, Ibaraki 305-8575, Japan; Department of Health Services Research, Faculty of Medicine, University of Tsukuba, 1-1-1 Tenno-dai, Tsukuba, Ibaraki 305-8575, Japan.

Background: Little is known about the association between advanced care management and patient outcomes in home settings. In 2009, the Japanese government introduced a financial incentive scheme for advanced care management by long-term care agencies with at least one advanced care manager. However, it remains unclear whether advanced care management in rural areas is associated with improved outcomes for recipients.

Aim: To identify the effects of authentic leadership, structural empowerment and forms of communication as antecedent factors of workplace social capital in nursing.

Background: Enhancing workplace social capital for nurses by management requires identifying antecedent factors of workplace social capital focusing on work environment and relationships between members.

Methods: In 2019, self-administered questionnaires were sent to all nurses working on the general wards of two university hospitals in Japan.

Aim: Recently, it has been established that most of the pleiotropic effects of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) are attributed to sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), which rides on HDL via apolipoprotein M (ApoM). In subjects with diabetes mellitus, both the pleiotropic effects of HDL and its role in reverse cholesterol transport are reported to be impaired. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the impaired pleiotropic effects of HDL in subjects with diabetes, from the aspects of S1P and ApoM.

In this multicentre double-blind randomized clinical trial, we investigated the effects of oral cholecalciferol supplementation on serum hepcidin and parameters related to anaemia and CKD-MBD among haemodialysis patients. Participants were assigned in a 2:2:1:1 ratio to either (1) thrice-weekly 3,000-IU cholecalciferol, (2) once-monthly cholecalciferol (equivalent to 9,000 IU/week), (3) thrice-weekly placebo, or (4) once-monthly placebo. We also examined the effect modifications by selected single nucleotide polymorphisms in vitamin D-related genes.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyporesponsiveness to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) like darbepoetin alfa (DA) can lead to negative health outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, emphasizing the need to study factors affecting response rates.
  • The study analyzed 1,695 CKD patients from the BRIGHTEN trial, focusing on their initial response to DA, which was measured by changes in hemoglobin levels over 12 weeks, and found that 13.3% did not respond to treatment.
  • Factors such as male gender, use of hypoglycemic agents, iron supplementation, and lower levels of markers like CRP and NT-proBNP were linked to better initial responses to DA, suggesting

Somatic stem cells have been isolated from multiple human tissues for their potential usefulness in cell therapy. Currently, mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are prepared after several passages requiring a few months of cell culture. In this study, we used a prospective isolation method of somatic stem cells from gestational or fat tissues, which were identified using CD73 antibody.

Separate assessment of mineral bone disorder (MBD) parameters including calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone (PTH), fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25D) predict renal outcomes in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs), with conflicting results. To date, data simultaneously evaluating these parameters and interwoven relations on renal outcomes are scarce. We conducted a prospective long-term follow-up cohort study included 263 KTRs with grafts functioning at least 1 year after transplantation.

In the spinal cord, the axonal tracts with various caliber sizes are myelinated by oligodendrocytes and function as high-velocity ways for motor and sensory nerve signals. In some neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, demyelination of small caliber axons is observed in the spinal cord. While type I/II oligodendrocytes among the four types are known to myelinate small diameter axons, their characteristics including identification of regulating molecules have not been understood yet.

Ethyl acetate extract of Kaempferia parviflora inhibits Helicobacter pylori-associated mammalian cell inflammation by regulating proinflammatory cytokine expression and leukocyte chemotaxis.

BMC Complement Med Ther

April 2020

Research Unit of Innovative Diagnosis of Antimicrobial Resistance, Department of Transfusion Medicine and Clinical Microbiology, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Chulalongkorn University, Pathumwan, Bangkok, Thailand.

Article Synopsis
  • Kaempferia parviflora (KP) has historically been used in Thai medicine to treat gastrointestinal issues, specifically targeting inflammation caused by Helicobacter pylori, which can lead to gastric diseases and cancer.
  • A study evaluated the effects of a crude ethyl acetate extract of KP (CEAE-KP) on AGS gastric cancer cells and found that it reduced cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner, with no toxicity at lower concentrations (8-16 μg/ml).
  • CEAE-KP significantly decreased interleukin-8 (IL-8) production and neutrophil chemotaxis, suggesting its potential as an effective alternative treatment to reduce inflammation from H. pylori infections.

Transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ) plays versatile roles in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. TAZ activity changes in response to the cellular environment such as mechanic and nutritional stimuli, osmolarity, and hypoxia. To understand the physiological roles of TAZ, chemical compounds that activate TAZ in cells are useful as experimental reagents.
