Patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing 1 (PNPLA1) is crucial in the esterification of linoleic acid (LA; 18:2n-6) to ω-hydroxy fatty acids (FA) of ceramide 1 (Cer1), the major barrier lipid of the differentiated epidermis. We previously reported that γ-linolenic acid (GLA; 18:3n-6) as well as LA is esterified to Cer1 subspecies with sphingosine (d18:1) or eicosasphingosine (d20:1) amide-linked to two different ω-hydroxy FA (30wh:0; 32wh:1). Here, we further investigated whether PNPLA1 is also responsible for esterification of GLA to these Cer1 subspecies in normal human keratinocytes (NHK).

Aims: The activity of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) is susceptible to the physiological conditions of the donor. Therefore, employing ADSCs from donors of advanced age or with diseases for cell therapy necessitates a strategy to enhance therapeutic efficacy before transplantation. This study aims to investigate the impact of supplementing Fibroblast Growth Factor 2 (FGF2) and Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF) on ADSC-mediated osteogenesis under osteoporotic conditions and to explore the underlying mechanisms of action.

Although food labeling on food packages is crucial for promoting a healthy diet, limited research has been conducted on how the COVID-19 pandemic (hereinafter "the pandemic") has affected food labeling awareness. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the changes in trends in food labeling awareness, comprehension, and usage in South Korea during the pandemic. We utilized a nationwide, large-scale, and long-term dataset provided by the Korea Community Health Survey (KCHS) from 2014 to 2022 (total = 1,756,847 participants).

Aims: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the most common cause of death, but they can be effectively managed through appropriate prevention and treatment. An important aspect in preventing CVDs is assessing each individual's comprehensive risk profile, for which various risk engines have been developed. The important keys to CVD risk engines are high reliability and accuracy, which show differences in predictability depending on disease status or race.

Aim: Lithospermum erythrorhizon and Pueraria lobata exhibit promising potential as cosmetic additives for mitigating skin barrier impairment induced by photoaging. Despite their potential, the precise mechanisms underlying their protective and ameliorative effects remain elusive. This study sought to assess the reparative properties of Lithospermum erythrorhizon and Pueraria lobata extracts (LP) on UVB-irradiated human skin keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) and explore the therapeutic potential of LP as a skin barrier protection agent.

Mesenchymal stem cells are recruited from the bone marrow into breast tumors, contributing to the creation of a tumor microenvironment that fosters tropism for breast tumors. However, the intrinsic mechanisms underlying the recruitment of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the breast tumor microenvironment are still under investigation. Our discoveries identified zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) as a specific intrinsic molecule that plays a vital role in mediating the collective migration of MSCs towards breast tumor cells and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), which is a crucial factor secreted by breast tumor cells.

We investigated whether older Korean women with prolonged breastfeeding duration have an increased risk of tooth loss, chewing difficulty, or undernutrition, as well as whether tooth loss and chewing difficulty mediate the association between breastfeeding duration and undernutrition risk. This study included 1666 women aged ≥65 years from the 2013-2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who breastfed after delivery. The number of teeth and chewing ability were investigated based on the status of individual teeth and a self-report questionnaire, respectively.

Aging leads to a decline in stem cell activity by reducing the repopulation rate and paracrine potential, ultimately diminishing efficacy in vivo. TNF-α can exert inflammatory and cell death actions via Erk by binding to TNFR-1, and survival and tissue repair actions via Akt by binding to TNFR-2. Aged cells are reported to have insufficient expression of TNFR-2, indicating that aged adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs-E) lack the ability for cell survival and immune control compared to young ADSCs (ADSCs-Y).

The onset of sarcopenia is associated with a decline in vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression, wherein reduced VDR levels contribute to muscle atrophy, while heightened expression promotes muscle hypertrophy. Like VDR, the age-related decline in protein deacetylase sirtuin (SIRT) expression is linked to the development of sarcopenia and age-related muscle dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate whether the VDR agonist 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25VD3) exerts beneficial effects on muscles through interactions with sirtuins and, if so, the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Background: Recent studies suggesting the importance of the gut-microbiome in intestinal aggregated alpha synuclein (α-syn) have led to the exploration of the possible role of the gut-brain axis in central nervous system degeneration. Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis), a gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacterium, has been linked to brain neurodegeneration in animal studies.

In the South Korean study to prevent cognitive impairment and protect BRAIN health through lifestyle intervention in at-risk elderly people (SUPERBRAIN), we evaluated the impact of a 24-week facility-based multidomain intervention (FMI) and home-based MI (HMI) on white matter integrity. Among 152 participants, aged 60-79 years without dementia but with ≥1 modifiable dementia risk factor, 19 FMI, 20 HMI, and 16 controls underwent brain MRI at baseline and 24 weeks. Between the intervention and control groups, we compared changes in fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD) and radial diffusivity (RD) at regions-of-interest (ROI) including the cingulum cingulate gyrus (CgC), cingulum hippocampus (CgH), superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), as well as the uncinate fasciculus (UF).
