Radiotherapy is well-recognized as an efficient non-invasive remedy for cancer treatment. Since 10 Gy, a weekly total dose for conventional radiotherapy, was proven to create unreparable and residual DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), they were found to give rise to mitotic failure, such as mitotic catastrophe, which resulted in multiple micronuclei associated with premature senescence. We demonstrated that pulverization of micronuclear DNA was caspase-dependent and triggered not ATM-dependent but DNA-PK-dependent DNA damage response, including phosphorylation of histone H2AX.

Accidental swallowing of press-through package (PTP) sheets that could cause esophageal perforation is commonly encountered in emergency departments requiring early detection and removal. We report a case in which an accidentally swallowed PTP sheet was removed from the esophagus using a detachable snare after usual endoscopic methods proved ineffective. A Japanese woman in her 60s visited the emergency department with a persistent sore throat.

We report on the case of a 50-year-old female patient with symptomatic polycystic liver disease who underwent living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) using right liver graft from her ABO-identical husband. To achieve operational tolerance, regulatory T-cell (T-reg)-based cell therapy was applied, following the protocol introduced by Todo et al. Briefly, donor lymphocytes were collected by leukapheresis 20 days before LDLT without any adverse events, and the cells were irradiated with a dose of 30 Gy and kept frozen.

Genetic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (gCJD) with a mutation in codon 180 of the prion protein gene (V180I gCJD) is the most common form of gCJD in Japan, but only a few cases have been reported in Europe and the United States. It is clinically characterized by occurring in the elderly and presenting as slowly progressive dementia, although it generally shows less cerebellar and pyramidal symptoms than sporadic CJD. Gentle touching of the hand activates emotion- and reward-related regions of the brain. The present study investigated activation of the prefrontal cortex by gentle sweeps of the palm or forearm with three materials (wood, velvet, paintbrush) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Sweeps of the left palm with a sensuous velvet fabric increased the oxy-hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) concentration in the frontal-polar cortex (FPC) and a part of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), compared to a neutral touch produced by rounded wood.
