By 2013, it had been shown that the genes cadherin-like receptor (Cad) and ATP-binding cassette transporter subfamily C2 (ABCC2) were responsible for insect resistance to several Cry1A toxins, acting as susceptibility-determining receptors, and many review articles have been published. Therefore, this review focuses on information about receptors and receptor-binding sites that have been revealed since 2014. Since 2014, studies have revealed that the receptors involved in determining susceptibility vary depending on the Cry toxin subfamily, and that binding affinity between Cry toxins and receptors plays a crucial role.

Colloidal suspensions are the basis of a wide variety of coatings, prepared as liquids and then dried into solid films. The processes at play during film formation, however, are difficult to observe directly. Suspended particles in a solvent form a packed film when the solvent evaporates. We investigated film growth rates in a narrow channel on a tilted drying interface and observed clear differences in the rates of film growth. Films grew faster at one end and slower at the other; thus, the slope of the packing front, , the boundary between the packed film and the drying suspension, changed as drying proceeded.

Accurate burn depth assessment is crucial to determine treatment plans for burn patients. We have previously proposed a method for performing burn depth assessments based on photoacoustic (PA) imaging, and we have demonstrated the validity of this method, which allows the successful detection of PA signals originating from the blood under the bloodless burned tissue, using rat burn models. Based on these findings, we started a clinical study in which we faced two technical issues: (1) When the burn depth was shallow, PA signals due to skin contamination and/or melanin in the epidermis (surface signals) could not be distinguished from PA signals originating from the blood in the dermis; (2) the size of the system was too large.

Field-evolved resistance of insect pests to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins (Cry toxins) is a threat to the efficacy of Bt-based bio-insecticides and transgenic crops. Most lepidopteran insect larvae exhibit stepwise feeding behaviors, such as palpation using the maxillary palps (MPs) followed by test biting and persistent biting. However, the purpose of palpation has been unclear. Previously, we found that nodule formation, a cellular defense response in insects, is regulated by humoral factors called C-type lectins in the hemolymph. To elucidate the factors that elicit nodule formation following the recognition of microorganisms by C-type lectins, a reproducible quantitative in vitro assay system was constructed. Then, using this system, the inhibitory activities of antisera raised against hemolymph proteases (HPs), serine protease homologues (SPHs), and pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP)-recognition proteins were assessed.

We propose the visualization of venous compliance (VC) using a digital red-green-blue (RGB) camera. The new imaging method, which transforms RGB values into VC, combines VC evaluation with blood concentration estimation from the RGB values of each pixel. In this work, the effects of PcaJ (beta-ketoadipate:succinyl-coenzyme A transferase)- and PcaD (beta-ketoadipate enol-lactone hydrolase)-inactivation on protocatechuic acid metabolism in Pseudomonas putida KT2440 were evaluated. Beta-ketoadipic acid was produced from protocatechuic acid by the inactivation of PcaJ as expected; however, a portion of the produced beta-ketoadipic acid was converted to levulinic acid through a purification step consisting of extraction from the culture and recrystallization. On the other hand, muconolactone was purified from the culture of the PcaD-inactivated mutant of KT2440, although beta-ketoadipate enol-lactone was supposed to be produced because it is the substrate of PcaD.
