Physically cross-linked organo-hydrogels for friction interfaces in joint replacements: design, evaluation and potential clinical applications.

J Mater Chem B

November 2023

Department of Orthopedics, The First Affiliated Hospital of USTC, Division of Life Sciences and Medicine, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, P. R. China.

This paper investigates physically crosslinked organo-hydrogels for total hip replacement surgery. Current materials in artificial joints have limitations in mechanical performance and biocompatibility. To overcome these issues, a new approach based on hydrogen bonds between polyvinyl alcohol, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), and glycerin is proposed to develop bioactive organo-hydrogels with improved mechanical properties and biocompatibility.

Background: This study will focus on exploring the clinical characteristics of rectal cancer (RC) patients with Second Primary Malignancies (SPMs) and constructing a prognostic nomogram to provide clinical treatment decisions.

Methods: We determined the association between risk factors and overall survival (OS) while establishing a nomogram to forecast the further OS status of these patients via Cox regression analysis. Finally, we evaluated the performance of the prognostic nomogram to predict further OS status.

Integrin α2 promotes immune escape in non-small-cell lung cancer by enhancing PD-L1 expression in exosomes to inhibit CD8 + T-cell activity.

J Investig Med

January 2024

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Xuzhou Hospital Affiliated to Xuzhou Medical University, Xuzhou Central Hospital, Xuzhou, China.

This study intended to delineate the mechanism and functional role of integrin α2 (ITGA2) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell immune escape. Bioinformatics analysis was utilized to analyze ITGA2 expression in NSCLC tissues, and correlations between ITGA2 expression and patient survival time, ITGA2 expression and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1; CD274) expression, and ITGA2 expression and CD8+ T-cell infiltration. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction detected ITGA2 expression.

Background: High-grade bladder cancer (HGBC) has a higher malignant potential, recurrence and progression rate compared to low-grade phenotype. Its early symptoms are often vague, making non-invasive diagnosis using urinary biomarkers a promising approach.

Methods: The gene expression data from urine samples of patients with HGBC was extracted from the GSE68020 dataset.

Background: The aim of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the short-term clinical efficacy and safety of unilateral biportal endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (UBE-TLIF) versus minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) for the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases by meta-analysis.

Methods: A computer-based search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and Chinese Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP) was conducted from the inception of the each database to April 2023. The searched literature was then screened according to strict inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease, which is characterized by wear of articular cartilage and narrow joint space, resulting in joint movement disorder. At present, accurate molecular mechanisms and effective interventions are still being explored. Here, we propose that angelica sinensis polysaccharide (ASP) alleviates OA progression by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ).

Purpose: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) with anti-PD-1/PD-L1 antibody are promising treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but lack reliable biomarkers of response. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the correlation between pre-treatment body composition measures (muscle, adipose, etc.) and the prognosis of patients with HCC treated with ICIs.

Facial Merkel cell carcinoma in a patient with diabetes and hepatitis B: A case report.

World J Clin Cases

June 2023

Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Dermatology, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital, Hangzhou 310014, Zhejiang Province, China.

Background: Patients with chronic inflammatory disorders are at a higher risk of developing aggressive Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). Diabetes is a common chronic inflammatory disease that is possibly associated with MCC; however, there are still no reports on the association between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and MCC. Whether there is an association between these three diseases and the specific mechanisms behind their effects is worth further research in the future.

Background: There has been a recent discovery of a new type of cell death produced by copper-iron ions, called Cuproptosis (copper death). The purpose of this study was to identify LncRNA signatures associated with Cuproptosis in ovarian cancer that could be used as prognostic indicators.

Methods: RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) profiles with clinicopathological data from TCGA database were used to select prognostic CRLs and then constructed prognostic risk model using multivariate regression analysis and LASSO algorithms.

Objective: Although synchronous multiple primary lung cancers (sMPLCs) are common in clinical practice, the choice of surgical modalities for the main lesion is still at the stage of exploration. This study is designed to analyze the prognosis of sMPLCs and single primary lung cancers with similar tumor stages and to explore whether sublobar resection has a similar prognosis as lobectomy for sMPLCs.

Methods: One-hundred forty-one cases of sMPLCs were selected, including the following: 65 cases underwent lobectomy for main lesions, and 76 cases underwent sublobar resection for main lesions.

Rationale: Urorectal septum malformation sequence (URSMS) is an extremely uncommon anomaly characterized by imperforate anus accompanied by multiple genitourinary malformations. Here, we report a case of URSMS identified by the autopsy and classified into partial URSMS. Prenatal diagnosis is challenging for clinicians due to the difficulty of early identification of URSMS and the relative lack of specific features in ultrasound.

February 2023

Jiaxing Key Laboratory of Basic Research and Clinical Translation on Orthopedic Biomaterials, Department of Orthopaedics, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Jiaxing University, 1518 North Huancheng Road, Jiaxing 314000, China.

Treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) remains a significant clinical challenge. Itaconate (IA), an emerging regulator of intracellular inflammation and oxidative stress, may potentially be harnessed to treat OA. However, the short joint residence time, inefficient drug delivery, and cell-impermeable property of IA can seriously hamper the clinical translation.

The former is completely made up of the 46, XY chromosome, while the latter results from 45, X/46, XY mosaicism. Both of them are sex chromosome disorders and are typically characterized by delayed puberty and primary amenorrhea due to disruption of the embryonic gonads into testes.

Background: An increasing number of lung cancer patients are opting for lobectomy for oncological treatment. However, due to the unique organismal condition of elderly patients, their short-term postoperative mortality is significantly higher than that of non-elderly patients. Therefore, there is a need to develop a personalised predictive tool to assess the risk of postoperative mortality in elderly patients.
