Members of the Cucurbitaceae family accumulate several hydrophobic organic pollutants in their above-ground parts at high concentrations. Major latex-like proteins (MLPs) identified in Cucurbita pepo bind to hydrophobic organic pollutants, such as pyrene and dieldrin, in roots, forming complexes that are transported via xylem vessels to the above-ground plant parts. However, soil remediation of hydrophobic organic pollutants utilizing MLPs has not been established.

The beneficial effect of milk kefir on respiratory heath has been previously demonstrated; however, water kefir and kefiran in the context of respiratory viral infections have not been investigated. Water kefir and kefiran could be alternatives to milk kefir for their application in persons with lactose intolerance or milk allergy and could be incorporated into vegan diets. Using mice models, this work demonstrated that the oral administration of water kefir or kefiran can modulate the respiratory Toll-like receptor (TLR3)-mediated innate antiviral immunity and improve the resistance to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection.

Background: Proanthocyanidins (PACs) from black soybean seed coat have antioxidant and anti-tumorigenic properties. We investigated the anti-tumor properties and mechanisms of action of PACs on colorectal cancer (CRC).
Methods: We fed the APC mice, which are highly susceptible to spontaneous intestinal adenoma formation, diets supplemented with or without PACs for 7 weeks and assessed adverse effects, the number and size of intestinal polyps, and the expression of pro- and anti-proliferative proteins in the intestine.

Liposome lipid peroxidation induced by cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet (CAPPJ) irradiation was investigated. The formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), an indicator of lipid peroxidation final products, as a function of irradiation was observed. Lipid radicals, peroxidation reaction intermediates generated by CAPPJ irradiation, were confirmed by increased NBD-pen fluorescence intensity.

Group VIA calcium-independent phospholipase A (iPLA) is a member of the PLA superfamily that exhibits calcium-independent activity in contrast to the other two major types, secreted phospholipase A (sPLA) and cytosolic phospholipase A (cPLA), which both require calcium for their enzymatic activity. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) has been reported to allosterically activate iPLA, and this has now been verified with a lipidomics-based mixed-micelle assay, but its mechanism of action has been unknown. Hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) was employed to identify ATP interaction peptide regions located within the ankyrin repeat domain at which ATP interacts.

Loss of cytosolic actin filaments upon TORC2 inhibition triggers chromosome fragmentation in yeast, which results from altered base excision repair of Zeocin-induced lesions. To find the link between TORC2 kinase and this yeast chromosome shattering (YCS) we performed phosphoproteomics. Homospory represents an intriguing reproductive strategy, including the potential for gametophytic selfing, considered the ultimate form of selfing. The plants of the fern genus Sceptridium (Ophioglossaceae) are generally considered to be predominantly selfing, making them suitable for analyzing speciation patterns and intraspecific variation characteristic of homosporous plants. The Sceptridium species in Japan not only exhibit variations in ploidy, including diploids, tetraploids, and hexaploids, but also pose taxonomic challenges due to morphologically distinctive forms that are difficult to be assigned to previously described species.

Selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is the guardian of ferroptosis, preventing unrestrained (phospho)lipid peroxidation by reducing phospholipid hydroperoxides (PLOOH). However, the contribution of other phospholipid peroxidases in ferroptosis protection remains unclear. We show that cells lacking GPX4 still exhibit substantial PLOOH-reducing capacity, suggesting a contribution of alternative PLOOH peroxidases.

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a therapeutic modality for treating neonatal calf diarrhea. Several practical barriers, including donor selection, fecal collection, and a limited timeframe for FMT, are the main constraints to using fresh feces for implementing on-farm FMT. We report the utility of FMT with pretreated ready-to-use frozen (F) or freeze-dried (FD) microorganisms for treating calf diarrhea.

The Ogasawara Islands, one of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site located about 1000 km south of Japan's main island, harbor numerous endemic species, many of which are as endangered. Cellulose-binding domains (CBDs) play a vital role in cellulose degradation by enzymes. Despite the strong ability of brown-rot fungi to degrade cellulose in wood, they have been considered to lack or have a low number of enzymes with CBD. Here, we report the C-terminal domain of a lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase from the brown-rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum (GtLPMO9A-2) functions as a CBD, classified as a new family of carbohydrate-binding module, CBM104.
