Members of the Cucurbitaceae family accumulate several hydrophobic organic pollutants in their above-ground parts at high concentrations. Major latex-like proteins (MLPs) identified in Cucurbita pepo bind to hydrophobic organic pollutants, such as pyrene and dieldrin, in roots, forming complexes that are transported via xylem vessels to the above-ground plant parts. However, soil remediation of hydrophobic organic pollutants utilizing MLPs has not been established.

The beneficial effect of milk kefir on respiratory heath has been previously demonstrated; however, water kefir and kefiran in the context of respiratory viral infections have not been investigated. Water kefir and kefiran could be alternatives to milk kefir for their application in persons with lactose intolerance or milk allergy and could be incorporated into vegan diets. Using mice models, this work demonstrated that the oral administration of water kefir or kefiran can modulate the respiratory Toll-like receptor (TLR3)-mediated innate antiviral immunity and improve the resistance to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection.

Group VIA calcium-independent phospholipase A (iPLA) is a member of the PLA superfamily that exhibits calcium-independent activity in contrast to the other two major types, secreted phospholipase A (sPLA) and cytosolic phospholipase A (cPLA), which both require calcium for their enzymatic activity. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) has been reported to allosterically activate iPLA, and this has now been verified with a lipidomics-based mixed-micelle assay, but its mechanism of action has been unknown. Homospory represents an intriguing reproductive strategy, including the potential for gametophytic selfing, considered the ultimate form of selfing. The plants of the fern genus Sceptridium (Ophioglossaceae) are generally considered to be predominantly selfing, making them suitable for analyzing speciation patterns and intraspecific variation characteristic of homosporous plants. The Sceptridium species in Japan not only exhibit variations in ploidy, including diploids, tetraploids, and hexaploids, but also pose taxonomic challenges due to morphologically distinctive forms that are difficult to be assigned to previously described species.

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a therapeutic modality for treating neonatal calf diarrhea.
