Recent evidence indicates ferroptosis is implicated in the pathophysiology of various liver diseases; however, the organ-specific regulation mechanism is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7), the terminal enzyme of cholesterol biosynthesis, as a regulator of ferroptosis in hepatocytes. Genetic and pharmacological inhibition (with AY9944) of DHCR7 suppress ferroptosis in human hepatocellular carcinoma Huh-7 cells.

The coat protein (CP) of the cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) yellow strain [CMV(Y)], but not the CMV B2 strain [CMV(B2)], serves as an avirulence determinant against the NB-LRR class RCY1 of Arabidopsis thaliana. To investigate the avirulence function, a series of binary vectors were constructed by partially exchanging the CP coding sequence between CMV(Y) and CMV(B2) or introducing nucleotide substitutions. Hyphal pellet formation by Aspergillus species in liquid cultures is one of the main obstacles to high-throughput anti-Aspergillus reagent screening. We previously constructed a hyphal dispersion mutant of Aspergillus fumigatus by disrupting the genes encoding the primary cell wall α-1,3-glucan synthase Ags1 and putative galactosaminogalactan synthase Gtb3 (Δags1Δgtb3). Mycelial growth of the mutant in liquid cultures monitored by optical density was reproducible, and the dose-response of hyphal growth to antifungal agents has been quantified by optical density.

In this study, we examined whether brown rice and sake lees (domestic feed ingredients) could replace corn and soybean meal (major imported feed ingredients) in broiler chick feed. In Experiment 1, 21-day-old broiler chicks were assigned to two groups and fed a corn-soybean- or a brown rice-soybean-based diet for three weeks (3 birds × 4 replicates/group). Dietary brown rice significantly improved body weight gain and feed conversion ratio.

A method of calculating weighted values for objective traits from the phenotypic records of all animals in a population was devised as an alternative to the conventional method of calculating weighted values from a family selection index. The genetic improvement of this method was verified by Monte Carlo computer simulation. In this study, the genetic parameters of major visceral diseases were estimated using the postmortem inspection records of 9057 fattening Japanese Black cattle in Shimane Prefecture, Japan, and the genetic correlation between visceral diseases and carcass traits was analyzed. There were six visceral diseases with a prevalence of 5% or higher, namely, pleurisy, pneumonia, bovine abdominal fat necrosis (BFN), rumenitis, hemorrhagic hepatitis, and perihepatitis. Three methods of predicting the response to truncated selection based on BLUP of breeding values (BVs) were compared under conditions in which the phenotypic values for the progenies of selected animals were not available. The following methods were used to predict the response to selection: (1) based on the mean of estimated breeding values (EBV) in the candidate population for selection ( ), (2) based on the variance of EBV in the candidate population for selection ( ), and (3) based on diagonal elements of the inverse matrix on the left-hand side of the mixed model equation ( ).
