Neo-tissue formation and host tissue regeneration determine the success of cardiac tissue engineering where functional hydrogel scaffolds act as cardiac (extracellular matrix) ECM mimic. Translationally, the hydrogel templates promoting neo-cardiac tissue formation are currently limited; however, they are highly demanding in cardiac tissue engineering. The current study focused on the development of a panel of four chitosan-based polyelectrolyte hydrogels as cardiac scaffolds facilitating neo-cardiac tissue formation to promote cardiac regeneration.

This study furthers the investigation of how pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) and the PAC1 receptor (PAC1R) regulate the homeostatic energy balance circuitry. We hypothesized that apoptotic ablation of PACAP neurones in the hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus (VMN) would affect both energy intake and energy expenditure. We also hypothesized that selective PAC1R knockdown would impair the PACAP-induced excitation in anorexigenic proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurones and inhibition of orexigenic neuropeptide Y (NPY)/agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurones in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC).

The present study undertakes a literature review of the last 30 years to investigate barriers and protective factors underrepresented college students encounter as applicants for medical school. Known barriers that influence matriculation into medical school were analyzed such as academic metrics and test scores.

Microglia play an important role in neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Here, we report an approach for generating microglia-containing cerebral organoids derived from human pluripotent stem cells involving the supplementation of growth factors (FGF, EGF, heparin) and 10% CO2 culture conditions. Using this platform, Western Pacific Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Parkinsonism-Dementia Complex (ALS-PDC) cerebral organoids were generated from patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of mortality due to infectious disease and rates have increased during the emergence of COVID-19, but many of the factors determining disease severity and progression remain unclear. Type I Interferons (IFNs) have diverse effector functions that regulate innate and adaptive immunity during infection with microorganisms. There is well-documented literature on type I IFNs providing host defense against viruses; however, in this review, we explore the growing body of work that indicates high levels of type I IFNs can have detrimental effects to a host fighting TB infection.

Multiscale molecular dynamics simulations using Martini coarse-grained (CG) and all-atom (AA) force fields are commonly used in membrane protein studies. In particular, reverse mapping an equilibrated CG model to an AA model offers an efficient way for preparing large membrane protein systems with complex protein shapes and lipid compositions. Here, we report that this hybrid CG-equilibrium-AA-production protocol may artificially increase lipid density and decrease hydration in ion channel pores walled with transmembrane gaps.

We tested the hypothesis that N/OFQ neurones in the arcuate nucleus (N/OFQ ) inhibit proopiomelanocortin (POMC ) neurones in a diet- and hormone-dependent manner to promote a more extensive rebound hyperphagia upon re-feeding following an 18 h fast. We utilized intact male or ovariectomized (OVX) female mice subjected to ad libitum-feeding or fasting conditions. N/OFQ neurones under negative energy balance conditions displayed heightened sensitivity as evidenced by a decreased rheobase threshold, increased firing frequency, and increased burst duration and frequency compared to ad libitum-feeding conditions.

Vismodegib is used in patients suffering from advanced basal cell carcinoma (BCC), but 100% of the patients taking it report dysgeusia and 50% discontinue the treatment. Treatment with neurotrophic factors can stimulate neuronal survival and functional improvement in injured organs. Here, we analysed novel transgenic mouse lines in which brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is overexpressed in taste buds, to examine whether higher levels of BDNF would reduce or prevent negative side effects of vismodegib in the taste system.

While combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has successfully increased the lifespan of individuals infected with HIV, a significant portion of this population remains affected by HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). C-C chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) has been well studied in immune response and as a co-receptor for HIV infection. HIV-infected (HIV) patients experienced mild to significant amelioration of cognitive function when treated with different CCR5 antagonists, including maraviroc and cenicriviroc.

Both active tuberculosis (TB) and asymptomatic latent () infection (LTBI) cause significant health burdens to humans worldwide. Individuals with immunocompromising health conditions, such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), have a weakened ability to control infection and are more susceptible to reactivation of LTBI to active diseases. T2DM cases are known to have glutathione (GSH) deficiency and impaired immune cell function, including the granulomatous response to infection.

Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase-Activating Polypeptide (PACAP), a pleiotropic neuropeptide, is widely distributed throughout the body. The abundance of PACAP expression in the central and peripheral nervous systems, and years of accompanying experimental evidence, indicates that PACAP plays crucial roles in diverse biological processes ranging from autonomic regulation to neuroprotection. In addition, PACAP is also abundantly expressed in the hypothalamic areas like the ventromedial and arcuate nuclei (VMN and ARC, respectively), as well as other brain regions such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc), bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BNST), and ventral tegmental area (VTA) - suggesting that PACAP is capable of regulating energy homeostasis both the homeostatic and hedonic energy balance circuitries.
