Data in the literature on the use of ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) in carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae bloodstream infections (CRKP-BSIs) are limited especially in OXA-48 (Oxacillinase-48) predominant regions. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of CAZ-AVI use on outcomes in CRKP-BSIs in Turkey, where OXA-48 is endemic. A multicenter retrospective observational study was conducted between January 2017 and September 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • Despite progress in ulcer treatment, there’s a continuous need for new, effective ways to prevent and treat ulcers.
  • This study tested the effects of krill oil, fish oil, and astaxanthin on rats with ethanol-induced gastric ulcers by comparing biochemical and histological data after 4 weeks of supplementation.
  • Results showed that while both krill and fish oil provided protective benefits, astaxanthin offered the most significant protection by reducing harmful substances and inflammation linked to ulcer damage.

Background/aims:  It was aimed to investigate the biochemical and histopathological effects of resveratrol and melatonin, via histone H4 and β-defensin 1, in diabetic rats.

Materials And Methods:  Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley male rats were categorized into 4 groups, with 6 rats in each group (control, diabetes mellitus, melatonin - diabetes mellitus, and resveratrol+diabetes mellitus). Diabetes was formed by giving streptozotocin to all groups except the control group.

Giant Intracranial Cavernous Malformations: A Review on Magnetic Resonance Imaging Characteristics.

Indian J Radiol Imaging

July 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Bahcesehir University School of Medicine, Göztepe Medical Park Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.

Intracranial cavernous malformations (CMs), commonly known as cavernomas or cavernous angiomas, are low-flow, well-circumscribed vascular lesions composed of sinusoidal spaces lined by a single layer of endothelium and separated by a collagenous matrix without elastin, smooth muscle, or other vascular wall elements. A diameter greater than 3 cm for a CM is unlikely. These lesions may have atypical appearances on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on analyzing the CT and MR imaging characteristics of intracranial extra-axial chondromas in six patients, highlighting their distinct appearances based on location.
  • The researchers found that frontal chondromas typically showed calcification and mixed signals on imaging, while cavernous sinus chondromas displayed bone erosion and intense hyperintensity on T2-weighted images without calcification.
  • The study concludes that while there are various imaging features, specific traits like absence of restricted diffusion and distinct signal patterns can suggest the presence of an intracranial chondroma, aiding in diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Plaque modification microcatheters (PM), specifically Tornus and Turnpike Gold, are specialized devices used to treat chronic total occlusion (CTO) in coronary artery interventions.
  • In a study analyzing their use across multiple centers, PMs were employed in 242 cases, representing only 1.6% of total procedures, with usage declining over time.
  • The results showed that both types of microcatheters had similar success rates and complication levels, indicating that while they are seldom used, they are effective and safe in CTO interventions.

Functional or non-secretory ectopic pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNET) can form around the sella turcica during the development of the adenohypophysis by differentiating and detaching from the pharyngeal roof. These tumors usually appear in the sphenoid sinus, clivus, cavernous sinus, infundibulum, and suprasellar cistern. Ectopic PitNETs typically display the characteristic magnetic resonance imaging findings of pituitary adenomas.

Objectives: Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing allogeneic HSCT, and effective prevention of GvHD is critical for the success of the HSCT procedure. Calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) have been used for decades as the backbone of GvHD prophylaxis. In this study, the efficacy and safety of Cyclosporine A (CsA) and tacrolimus (TCR) were compared in pediatric HSCT for thalassemia.

Estradiol (E2), a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), AMH, and inhibin B levels, along with AFC and MOV, are used to determine ovarian reserve in pre-menopausal women. Studies have shown that AMH levels are more sensitive than those of E2, FSH, and inhibin B and that AFC and MOV can be used to evaluate ovarian reserve. AMH, AFC, and MOV measurements were performed before and after adjuvant SC in 3-month periods for one year.

Background: The minichromosome maintenance protein-2 (MCM-2) is a more sensitive proliferation marker than Ki-67. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between MCM-2 and Oncotype DX recurrence score (ODX-RS) and determine an MCM-2 cutoff value in high-risk patients according to TAILORx risk categorization.

Methods: Hormone receptor (HR) positive HER-2 negative early-stage breast cancer patients (pT1-2, pN0-N1, M0) who had ODX-RS were included in the study.

Objectives: Sleep deprivation (SD) has been found to be associated with an increased incidence of adverse cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. The aim of this study was to investigate whether or not acute SD has a pathological effect on the geometry and the systolic and diastolic functions of the right and left heart chambers by standard transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) in healthy individuals with acute SD.

Methods: Nurses with no history of acute or chronic diseases underwent TTE and STE after working a night shift, a sleepless period of 24 h and 7 days of normal sleep after the night shift.
