Severe haematological involvement in children with systemic lupus erythematosus and clinical associations.

Objectives: To investigate the severe haematological involvement in children with SLE and assess its clinical associations, treatments, outcome and damage accrual.

Methods: The medical charts of children with SLE in whom haematological involvement was observed were reviewed. Severe haematological indices were defined as autoimmune haemolytic anaemia with a haemoglobin concentration < 8 g/dL, thrombocyte count < 30 000/µL, and neutrophil count < 500/µL.

Superficial CD34-Positive Fibroblastic Tumor: Report of an Extremely Rare Entity.

Superficial CD34-positive fibroblastic tumor (SCPFT), a newly described neoplasm is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of intermediate malignancy. A 63-year-old man presented with a painless, slow-growing, skin-colored nodule of 8 × 4 mm in diameter on the right side of the neck. It was completely resected.

Examination of Blood and Tracheal Aspirate Culture Results in Intensive Care Patients: 5-year analysis.

Objective: Majority of nosocomial infections are seen in intensive care units (ICUs) and they course with higher rates of mortality, and morbidity rates. In this study, we aimed to investigate the distribution of microorganisms isolated from the tracheal aspirate and blood cultures of ICU hospitalized patients, and their antibiotic resistance profiles.

Method: Tracheal aspirate and blood cultures sent from ICU patients were evaluated retrospectively between 2014-2018.

Oral mucosal involvement and petechial lesions: a SDRIFE case with unusual findings.

Symmetrical drug-related intertriginous and flexural exanthema (SDRIFE) is a type IV hypersensitivity reaction characterized by a symmetrical erythematous rash in the gluteal and intertriginous areas. SDRIFE was previously considered to be the same presentation as Baboon Syndrome, however, has been suggested to be a different entity in the recent publications. The lesions are generally maculopapular and there is no mucosal involvement.

A retrospective analysis of complications observed in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia during chemotherapy.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the complications that we observed in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) during the remission induction, consolidation, and reinduction phases of chemotherapy retrospectively.

Methods: We analysed the clinical records of 128 patients with ALL who were diagnosed and treated in the Department of Pediatric Hematology of Istanbul Medeniyet University Goztepe Training Hospital between August 2009 and April 2014 to document the acute complication other than febrile neutropenia episodes, which developed during the induction, consolidation and reinduction phases of chemotherapy.

Results: We documented 279 complications.

Calretinin immunohistochemistry for the diagnosis of Hirschprung disease in rectal biopsies.

In this study we aimed to evaluate the usability of calretinin staining in the diagnosis and exclusion of HD in 36 rectal biopsies. Through immunohistochemical examination, in of a total of 21 pediatric patients in whom ganglion cells were detected in first rectal biopsies and in re-biopsies, ganglion cells were seen through nuclear and cytoplasmic staining. In the lamina propria and superficial submucosa, staining of nerve fibers was detected in a granular pattern in varying intensities.

Changes in platelet indices in children with bicuspid aortic valve.

Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) can help diagnose cardiovascular pathologies. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the changes in platelet (PLT) indices in children diagnosed with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) with mild stenosis and without stenosis to compare patients with mild stenosis with those without stenosis. A total of 73 children diagnosed with BAV (30 patients with mild stenosis and 43 without stenosis) with a mean age 9.

Myeloid sarcoma presenting with leukemoid reaction in a child treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Background. Myeloid sarcoma is an extramedullary neoplasm of immature myeloid cells. Our study reports a presentation of myeloid sarcoma which presented with severe leukemoid reaction as a secondary malignancy in a patient who was treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia previously.

Are prophylactic antibiotics necessary for urodynamic study?

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of prophylactic fosfomycin tromethamine (FT) and ciprofloxacin in preventing bacteriuria caused by urodynamic studies (UDS). A total of 426 adult patients presenting for UDS were enrolled the study. A midstream urine sample was taken 72 hours before and 5 days after the procedure.

Efficacy of three different alpha 1-adrenergic blockers and hyoscine N-butylbromide for distal ureteral stones.

Purpose: To evaluate hyoscine N-butyl bromide (HBB) and three different alpha-1 blockers in the treatment of distal ureteral stones.

Materials And Methods: A total of 140 patients with stones located in the distal tract of the ureter with stone diameters of 5 to 10mm were enrolled in the present study and were randomized into 4 equal groups. Group 1 received HBB, Group 2 received alfuzosin, Group 3 received doxazosin and Group 4 received terazosin.

Correlation of pulsatility index with intracranial pressure in traumatic brain injury.

Aim: In traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients, it is desired to monitor the intracranial pressure (ICP) to assess the cerebral haemodynamics and guide the therapy. The study was designed to see if the pulsatility index (PI) measured by transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) predicts information about ICP values.

Material And Methods: In 52 TBI patients with Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score < 9, invasive intracranial monitoring and TCD ultrasonography for PI were performed through five days.

Reducing infectious complications after transrectal prostate needle biopsy using a disposable needle guide: is it possible?

Purpose: To investigate whether the use of a disposable needle guide results in a decreased incidence of infectious complication after transrectal prostate needle biopsy (TPNB).

Materials And Methods: Fifty five patients who underwent 10-core TPNB were randomized into two groups. A pre-biopsy blood and urine examination was performed in both groups.

Is activating transcription factor 3 up-regulated in patients with hypospadias?

Purpose: Even though hypospadias is one of the most common congenital anomalies, the cause of hypospadias is largely unknown. With regard to molecular biology and microarray technology, it appears that hypospadias is potentially related to disrupted gene expression. Genomic analysis of hypospadiac tissue indicated a potential role for activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) in the development of this anomaly.

Objective: To evaluate the pain score during transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided prostate biopsy using three different anaesthetic applications and no anaesthesia.

Material And Methods: One-hundred men undergoing TRUS-guided prostate biopsy were prospectively enrolled in this study. Patients were randomized to four groups.

Relation between microalbuminuria and gene mutations in familial Mediterranean fever.

We aimed to investigate the urinary microalbumin level, which is a sensitive marker of glomerular function for establishing probable renal involvement in early stages of the disease in patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), and to determine the relation between gene mutations of these cases and urinary microalbumin levels. Fifty patients with FMF who were admitted to our department and had been followed up in the pediatric rheumatology outpatient clinic for five years were included in the study. Diagnosis was based on Tel-Hashomer criteria.

Ulcus cruris associated with prolidase deficiency.

Prolidase deficiency is an autosomal recessive disorder that is associated with chronic cutaneous ulcers, mental retardation, unusual facial appearance, skeletal deformities, joint dislocations, hematological anomalies, splenomegaly, and chronic infections. The most typical finding is chronic, recurrent leg ulcers appearing in early childhood. Prolidase (peptidase-D) is necessary for collagen biosynthesis and its deficiency leads to impairment in connective tissue of the skin, capillaries, and lymphatic vessels.

The surgical results of the pubovaginal sling procedure using Intravaginal Slingplasty (IVS) for stress urinary incontinence.

Objective: We investigated the surgical results and complications of the Intravaginal Slingplasty (IVS) procedure in women with stress urinary incontinence.

Patients And Methods: A total of 72 women with urethral hypermobility underwent the pubovaginal sling procedure using IVS with a mean age of 50.35+/-9.

Acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy: a case report.

Acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy is a cutaneous leukocytoclastic vasculitis, clinically characterized by the acute development of peripheral edema and targetoid purpuric lesions on the face and extremities. The clinical picture has a violent onset with a short benign course followed by spontaneous complete recovery. We describe a five-month-old boy with acute hemorrhagic edema, in whom the disease appeared after antibiotic treatment for a cellulitis in front of the tragus.

Lipid profile in chronic allograft nephropathy.

Chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN) represents the cumulative and incremental damage to nephrons by time-dependent immunologic and nonimmunologic causes. Hyperlipidemia is one nonimmunologic mechanism that promotes injury and poor function in a renal transplant. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of lipid profiles on CAN among renal transplant recipients.

Utilization of elderly donors in living related kidney transplantation.

Kidney transplantation has become the treatment of choice for end-stage renal disease. However, its application is limited due to inadequate organ supply, mainly because many dialysis patients do not have suitable living donors. The increasing discrepancy between organ supply and demand has forced many transplant centers to consider using organs procured from marginal donors.

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol in coronary artery disease patients: is it as low as expected?

Objective: Epidemiological studies demonstrated that the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels in Turkish people are lower compared to other populations. In the present study, the HDL cholesterol levels in subjects with or without angiographically documented coronary artery disease (CAD) were compared to assess whether HDL cholesterol levels were as low as expected.

Methods: A total of 420 consecutive patients with age of > or =40 years (160 female, 260 male) undergoing coronary angiography were included in the study.

Avulsion fracture of the posterior cruciate ligament at the tibial insertion in a child: a case report.

The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fracture from its tibial insertion is a very rare condition in children. An isolated avulsion fracture of PCL in a child and its repair by open reduction and internal fixation with a screw is reported.

Relationship between low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and metabolic syndrome in Turkish patients.

Objective: It is stated that high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels are low in Turkish people and that this may be related to genetic factors. Low HDL-C is a parameter of the metabolic syndrome (MetS). In this study, the relationship between low HDL-C levels and MetS has been investigated.

Tissue reactions of 5 sling materials and tissue material detachment strength of 4 synthetic mesh materials in a rabbit model.

Purpose: We evaluated tissue reactions to 5 sling materials used in tension-free vaginal tape (TVT), intravaginal slingplasty (IVS), polypropylene mesh hernia repair, the suprapubic approach to suburethral polypropylene tape (SPARC) and cadaveric fascia lata procedures. We also compared the mesh-to-tissue attachment strength of 4 sling mesh materials (TVT, IVS, surgical polypropylene mesh and SPARC) at on days 2, 7, 15 and 30 after implantation.

Materials And Methods: A total of 20 female New Zealand White rabbits were randomized to group 1-2 days, group 2-7 days, group 3-15 days and group 4-30 days.

Short rib-polydactyly syndrome.

Introduction: Short rib-polydactyly syndrome (SRPD) is an autosomal recessive, lethal skeletal dysplasia. It is characterized by short limb dwarfism, short ribs with thoracic hypoplasia, polydactyly, and multiple anomalies of major organs.

Case Report: We report a case of SRPD subtype II (Majewski) that was detected in the 36th week of gestation, showing hydropic change, narrow thorax, shortened limbs, protuberant abdomen, micromelia, polydactyly and extremely low set ears, depressed nasal bridge, and cleft palate.
