Neurodegeneration, the decline of nerve cells in the brain, is a common feature of neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs). Oxidative stress, a key factor in NDDs such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Huntington's disease can lead to neuronal cell death, mitochondria impairment, excitotoxicity, and Ca stress. Environmental factors compromising stress response lead to cell damage, necessitating novel therapeutics for preventing or treating brain disorders in older individuals and an aging population.

Oral bioavailability of glibenclamide (Glb) was appreciably improved by the formation of an amorphous solid dispersion with Poloxamer-188 (P-188). Poloxamer-188 substantially enhanced the solubility and thereby the dissolution rate of the biopharmaceutics classification system (BCS) class II drug Glb and simultaneously exhibited a better stabilizing effect of the amorphous solid dispersion prepared by the solvent evaporation method. The physical state of the dispersed Glb in the polymeric matrix was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared studies.

Emulsion systems are extensively used in the food processing sector and the use of natural emulsifiers like proteins for stabilizing emulsion has been in demand from consumers due to increased awareness about the consumption of healthy food. Numerous methods are available for the preparation of emulsion, but ultrasound got more attention among common methods owing to its economical and environment-friendly characteristics. The physical effects caused by to bursting of the cavity bubble, result in reduced droplet size, thus forming an emulsion with appreciable stability.

Background: Peripheral insulin resistance and compromised insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells are significant factors and pathogenic hallmarks of diabetes mellitus (DM). NF-κβ/TLR-4 and SERCA/Ca pathways have been identified as potential pathways regulating insulin synthesis by preserving pancreatic β-cell functioning. The current study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of aged garlic extract (AGE) against DM in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced rat model with particular emphasis on pancreatic β-cell functioning.

Background: Poor oral health and oral dysbiosis were found to be associated with cancers, especially of the gastrointestinal (GI) system. But the cause-and-effect relationship and the effect of the risk are not yet known due to scarcity of literature. Understanding such risk relationship can contribute to an integrated multi-disciplinary approach for GI cancer prevention.

Variations in the arch of the aorta and aortic valves among fetal, cadaveric, and post-mortem specimens present a spectrum of anatomical configurations, posing challenges in establishing a standard norm. While some variations hold surgical significance, many bear little functional consequence but provide insights into embryological origins. The aortic arch exhibits diverse branching patterns, including common trunks and different orders, relevant for endovascular surgeries.

Aim: This prospective cohort study aimed to compare the predictive accuracy of outcome (survival/death) among trauma patients using various prognostic scores.

Methods: Over 3 months, 240 trauma patients in a tertiary care hospital were assessed for demographic details, trauma characteristics, vital signs, Glasgow coma scale, arterial blood gas values, and lab markers. Injury severity score (ISS), revised trauma score (RTS), trauma and injury severity score (TRISS), and acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) were applied at admission, 24 hours, and 48 hours post-admission.

Multiwaves, breathers, lump and other solutions for the Heimburg model in biomembranes and nerves.

Sci Rep

May 2024

Department of Quantitative analysis, College of Business Administration, King Saud University, P.O. Box 71115, 11587, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In this manuscript, a mathematical model known as the Heimburg model is investigated analytically to get the soliton solutions. Both biomembranes and nerves can be studied using this model. The cell membrane's lipid bilayer is regarded by the model as a substance that experiences phase transitions.

Cytokine storm (CS) refers to the spontaneous dysregulated and hyper-activated inflammatory reaction occurring in various clinical conditions, ranging from microbial infection to end-stage organ failure. Recently the novel coronavirus involved in COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) has been associated with the pathological phenomenon of CS in critically ill patients. Furthermore, critically ill patients suffering from CS are likely to have a grave prognosis and a higher case fatality rate.

Physical Sciences Division, Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology, (An Autonomous Institute Under DST, Govt. of India) Vigyan Path, Paschim Boragaon, Garchuk Guwahati Assam 781035 India

Aromatic amino acids (AAs) have garnered particular interest due to their pivotal roles in numerous biological processes and disorders. Variations in AA self-assembly not only affect protein structures and functions, but their non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, and π-π stacking, yield versatile assemblies vital in bio-inspired material fabrication. Tyrosine (Tyr), a non-essential aromatic amino acid, holds multifaceted significance in the body as a protein building block, neurotransmitter precursor, thyroid hormone contributor, and melanin synthesis regulator.
