Article Synopsis
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a serious lung complication from COVID-19, and the study explored the use of oral beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) to reduce inflammation in affected patients.
  • 75 patients with mild ARDS were randomly assigned to receive either BHB or placebo for five days, with the main goal of measuring changes in inflammatory cytokines.
  • Results indicated that BHB significantly lowered pro-inflammatory cytokines, increased anti-inflammatory cytokines, and resulted in shorter hospital stays without serious side effects, suggesting it may be a promising treatment for ARDS.

Skull reconstruction using cranial implants is often required for repairing skull defects caused due to trauma, diseases, or malignancy to protect intracranial structures. For relieving Intracranial Pressure (ICP) surgeons restore cranial defects either using natural bones or fabricated custom cranial implants. With the increase in Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and challenges faced by TBI patients to regain normalcy, it is imperative to analyse the mechanical behaviour of skull-implant assemblies under some Head Injury Criteria (HIC).

Polyethoxylated surfactants, such as those of the Tween and Pluronic series, are commonly used to disperse carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and other nanoparticles. However, the current understanding of the nature of interactions between these surfactants and CNTs is limited. The nature of the interactions between surfactants (Tween-80 [T80] and Pluronic F68 [PF68]) and CNTs was investigated using high-resolution magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (HRMAS-NMR) and coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

November 2022

Department of Computer Science, Lecturer, Government Polytechnic College, Bilagi, Bagalkot, Karnataka, India..

Oxygen is probably the most commonly prescribed drug in the emergency setting and is a life-saving modality as well. However, like any other drug, oxygen therapy may also lead to various adverse effects. Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may develop hypercapnia during supplemental oxygen therapy, particularly if uncontrolled.

The use of dyes and segments has increased widely in recent years, but it poses a serious health risk to ecosystems. In this work, TiO and two-dimensional g-CN nanosheets (g-CN) were fabricated through co-precipitation and thermal polymerization technique, respectively. The g-CN-TiO photocatalyst (1: 3, 2: 2, 3: 1) in various weight percentages was prepared using a simple impregnation process.

Water pollution is a serious problem that threatens both developed and developing countries. Several methods have been used to purify contaminated water, among which the photocatalytic decomposition approach is widely used to purify contaminated water from organic pollutants. In this work, biomass derived SiO nanoparticles composite with TiO semiconductors used as an efficient photocatalyst for degradation of RhB dye molecules under UV-visible light irradiation is proclaimed.

Polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate is commonly used to obtain stable dispersions of nanoparticles (NPs) such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene. However, the mechanism underlying dispersion is poorly understood. The present study aimed at investigating the mechanism of stabilization of carbon NPs (CNPs), namely, single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs), multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs), and graphene, by Tween-80 using attenuated total internal reflection-Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

The recent incidence of terrible acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2) has presently experienced some noteworthy mutations since its discovery in 2019 in Wuhan, China. The present research work focuses on the synthesis of three triazole derivatives (BMTPP, BMTTP, and BMTIP) and their inhibition activities against SARS-Cov-2 spike and ACE2 receptor proteins. The crystal structure for BMTTP was determined by the SCXRD method and optimized geometrical parameters for the three triazole derivatives were obtained by DFT calculations.

Myopia, its prevalence, current therapeutic strategy and recent developments: A Review.

Indian J Ophthalmol

August 2022

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences; Center for Basic and Translational Research in Health Science, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Punjab, India.

Article Synopsis
  • - Myopia, a common vision problem where distant objects appear blurry, is becoming more prevalent globally, with estimates showing an increase from 22% of the population in 2000 to 52% by 2050, particularly in developed areas.
  • - Current treatments for myopia, like glasses, contact lenses, and laser surgery, often have significant side effects and are less effective, prompting the search for new alternatives.
  • - A promising candidate, 7-methylxanthine (7-MX), has shown effectiveness in treating myopia in clinical studies, demonstrating low toxicity and favorable properties, and is currently undergoing further investigation as a long-term treatment option.

Towards optimal toe-clearance in synthesizing polycentric prosthetic knee mechanism.

Comput Methods Biomech Biomed Engin

May 2022

Department of Mechanical Engineering, KSR College of Engineering, Tiruchengode, Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, India.

Stability at the stance phase and near normal able-bodied swing phase kinematics are essential in designing the prosthetic knee mechanism for transfemoral amputees. Primarily, insufficient mid swing toe clearance results in asymmetrical gait patterns, leading to muscular-skeletal pain and joint degeneration. The present work is focused on synthesizing a polycentric knee mechanism to enhance the toe-clearance at mid-swing for safe level ground walking of amputees in developing countries.

The rate and extent of drug release under physiological conditions is a key factor influencing the therapeutic activity of a formulation. Real-time detection of drug release by conventional pharmacokinetics approaches is confounded by low sensitivity, particularly in the case of tissue-targeted novel drug delivery systems, where low concentrations of the drug reach systemic circulation. We present a novel fluorescence turn-on platform for real-time monitoring of drug release from nanoparticles based on reversible fluorescence quenching in fluorescein esters.
