Carotidynia as the First Manifestation of Takayasu Arteritis: Report of Two Cases and a Brief Review of Literature.

Carotidynia is a neck pain syndrome characterized by tenderness at the carotid bifurcation secondary to various aetiologies. We describe two young females who presented with carotidynia and on evaluation were diagnosed with Takayasu arteritis. Carotidynia in a young female should alert the clinician to evaluate for Takayasu arteritis.

A Large Board Pin in the Right Main Bronchus: A Case Report With Review of Literature.

Foreign body (FB) aspiration is one of the most common emergency scenarios in cardiothoracic surgery and ENT unit consultations. We present the case of a 16-year-old male student who inadvertently ingested board pins while enjoying leftover savory. Despite the initial shock, he promptly sought evaluation at the local primary care facility.

Advancing Perioperative Neurocognitive Health: A Critical Review of Predictive Tools, Diagnostic Methods, and Interventional Strategies.

Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PNDs) affect a large percentage of people who undergo surgeries that need general anesthesia. There is an increased risk of death and a major disruption to postoperative self-care as a result of this. This study compiles all the relevant materials that the authors have found to investigate postnatal depression and its causes, as well as the methods used to determine the probability and severity of PNDs and how to reduce their risk before surgery.

A Cadaveric Study on Perforator Anatomy of the Medial Sural Artery Perforator Flap.

 The medial sural artery perforator (MSAP) flap was described by Cavadas et al in 2001. The aim of this study was to analyze the flap characteristics in the regional population and was planned as a cadaveric dissection study.  Thirty-three legs of fresh cadavers were studied for perforator characteristics, length, and origin of pedicle and skin paddle thickness.

Clinical Profiles and Outcomes of Patients Undergoing Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography in a Tertiary Care Center.

Introduction Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a lifesaving therapeutic procedure that carries its own complexities and risks. Clinicians use ERCP as a therapeutic tool for the treatment of biliary stones, malignant obstruction, and acute cholangitis.  Aim In our study, we aimed to analyze the clinical profile and outcome of patients who underwent ERCP in the Department of Medical Gastroenterology from August 2021 to February 2023 at Government Medical College Kottayam in India.

Diagnostic analysis of pleural fluid cell blocks using relevant immunohistochemical markers in clinically suspicious cases of malignancy.

Objective: Thoracocentesis is a less invasive and expensive procedure than pleural biopsy, enabling sample collection for cytological evaluation. Cell blocks prepared from these samples provide histopathological diagnoses; further, immunohistochemistry (IHC) can be performed for subtyping malignancies, guiding the clinician in choosing the appropriate treatment modality for the patient. We aimed to determine the various histological subtypes of malignancies using cell block IHC and compare the cell block and conventional cytology methods for diagnosing malignant pleural effusion.

Gallstone Disease and Its Correlation With Thyroid Disorders: A Narrative Review.

Over the years, several studies have revealed an important link between thyroid disorders and gallstone disease. According to these studies, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are associated with cholesterol gallstone disease. This association between thyroid hormone disorders and cholesterol gallstone disease is due to the importance of thyroid hormones on cholesterol synthesis, bile functioning and content, and gallbladder motility.

The association of Pulmonary Hypertension and right ventricular systolic function - updates in diagnosis and treatment.

Right ventricular (RV) systolic function is an essential but neglected component in cardiac evaluation, and its importance to the contribution to overall cardiac function is undermined. It is not only sensitive to the effect of left heart valve disease but is also more sensitive to changes in pressure overload than the left ventricle. Pulmonary Hypertension is the common and well-recognized complication of RV systolic dysfunction.

Effects of lemon-tomato juice consumption on crystal formation in the urine of patients with calcium oxalate stones: A randomized crossover clinical trial.

Background: Dietary supplementation with citrate-containing juices may serve as an effective alternative to potassium citrate therapy for preventing calcium oxalate stone recurrence. This study was performed to evaluate whether consumption of lemon-tomato juice can decrease the tendency for stone formation in the urine of calcium oxalate stone formers.

Materials And Methods: The study was conducted as a prospective interventional randomized crossover clinical trial with a repeated-measures design.

Gastrointestinal involvement of common variable immunodeficiency: A diagnostic challenge to the physician.

A 35-year-old male presented with fatigue for 1 month and was found to have megaloblastic anaemia. Further evaluation showed low globulin levels and pan hypogammaglobulinemia. Past history was significant for chronic small bowel diarrhoea and bilateral genu valgum deformity from childhood.

Financial Burden and Catastrophic Health Expenditure Associated with COVID-19 Hospitalizations in Kerala, South India.

Introduction: Catastrophic health expenditure during COVID-19 hospitalization has altered the economic picture of households, especially in low resource settings with high rates of COVID-19 infection. This study aimed to estimate the out of pocket (OOP) expenditure and the proportion of households that incurred catastrophic health expenditure due to COVID-19 hospitalization in Kerala, South India.

Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among a representative sample of 155 COVID-19 hospitalized patients in Kottayam district over four months, using a pretested interview schedule.

The Impact of Abstinence From Alcohol on Erectile Dysfunction: A Prospective Follow up in Patients With Alcohol Use Disorder.

Background: There is a compelling evidence for the relation between alcohol use and erectile dysfunction (ED), however the impact of alcohol abstinence on improvement of ED is explored sparsely.

This work, deals with the interaction of a pyridine derivative, 2-hydroxy-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-6-phenylpyridine 3-carbonitrile (HDN) with serum albumins at physiological conditions utilizing the steady state and time-resolved fluorescence techniques by probing the emission behavior of Trp in BSA and HSA. In-silico studies revealed a combined static and dynamic quenching mechanism for the interactions.

Cystic hypersecretory carcinoma with invasion: Case series on a rare variant of carcinoma breast.

Background: Cystic Hypersecretory Carcinoma (CHC) is a rare subset of breast carcinoma. It is part of a spectrum of cystic hypersecretory lesions which includes cystic hypersecretory hyperplasia (CHH), CHH with atypia, CHC in situ and CHC with invasion. Approximately 65 cases of cystic hypersecretory lesions have been reported; most of them were CHC in situ and only 19 cases of CHC with invasion have been reported so far.

A Rare Case of Parvovirus B19 Infection Induced Paroxysmal Cold Hemoglobinuria in an Adult Female.

Chest wall reconstruction: success of a team approach-a 12-year experience from a tertiary care institution.

Background: The thoracic cavity was considered as a forbidden area in the past and anyone attempting to meddle with it was expected to be doomed. But the past several decades have seen a marked improvement in the management and reconstruction of complex chest wall defects. This study was undertaken to review our experience in chest wall reconstruction during the past 12 years and to stress upon the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach to this complex problem.

Detection of partial loss of hippocampal striation at 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging.

Objectives: Partial loss of hippocampal striation (PLHS) is recently described in 3 T and 7 T MR imaging as a sensitive indicator of hippocampal sclerosis.

Primary Objective: We described the demographic characteristics of the population with seizure disorder having PLHS at 1.5 T MR imaging and tried to see the relation of PLHS to the classic signs of hippocampal sclerosis.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common public health issue of pregnancy and women who have had GDM are at high risk for developing of diabetes mellitus Type-2. The aim of this study was to find the association between various clinical and biochemical parameters and GDM. One hundred and six consecutive patients who attended the out patient unit of department of gynecology, Kottayam Medical College, were enrolled in the study and followed up through the whole antenatal, intra-partum and post-partum periods to identify the obstetric outcome.
