Medial epicondyle fractures are uncommon elbow injuries and require careful radiological evaluation for appropriate diagnosis and management. Missed or neglected medial epicondyle fractures, however, are reported as uncommon reports or small series. Incarceration of the medial epicondyle fragment within the elbow joint is often reported and poses therapeutic challenges.

Article Synopsis
  • Radioulnar synostosis is a rare complication of forearm fractures that can limit movement, and there is no agreed-upon treatment approach, especially for diaphysial distal third synostosis.
  • In a reported case, a patient with long-standing synostosis successfully had the bony bridge removed, and a native tendon was used to prevent re-ossification during surgery.
  • After 10 years of follow-up, there was no re-ossification, although clinical improvement was minimal; nonetheless, the patient was able to perform daily activities without discomfort.

Anogenital warts (AGWs) are one of the leading sexually transmitted infections in the world. This condition poses a number of challenges to dermatologists, including the reluctance of patients to consult a physician and the high likelihood of relapse. Individuals with AGWs suffer a substantial psychological morbidity.

The long-standing pain in fingers is not only agonising and disabling to the patient but also affects the quality of life. Pointed fingertip pain is also inappropriately managed for years leading to further morbidity. Pinpoint tenderness, paroxysmal pain, and cold hypersensitivity at finger pulp space may be features of glomus tumor.

Dermatophytosis due to the complex is being increasingly reported across India. Reports of therapeutic failure have surfaced recently, but there are no clinical break points (CBP) or epidemiological cutoffs (ECVs) available to guide the treatment of dermatophytosis. In this study, a total of 498 isolates of the complex were collected from six medical centers over a period of five years (2014 to 2018).

Background: Success of a programme of free-choice participation, like Family Planning Programme, can be envisaged only when focus is on the needs of the people. Although India was the first country to introduce Family Planning Programme, total fertility rate of 2.1 has not yet been achieved, highlighting that the need of limiting family after two children is not yet felt by the people of India.

Radiotherapy to volumes defined by metabolic imaging in gliomas: time to abandon monstrous margins?

Ann Transl Med

The survival in patients with high grade gliomas (HGG) remains poor even after the adoption post-operative radiotherapy (RT) to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based volumes. Despite delivery of 'standardized' doses of radiation, recurrence is the norm, rather than the exception. Recurrences occur both within, and outside of the volume of irradiation, leading us to two questions-firstly concerning the adequacy of the dose of radiation used, and secondly about the current methods of treatment volume delineation.

Chemically enhanced radiotherapy: visions for the future.

Radiotherapy (RT) is an important part of cancer management, with more than a third of all cancer cures being attributable to RT. Despite the advances in RT over the past century, the overall outcomes in a majority of malignancies are still unsatisfactory. There has been a constant endeavor to enhance the outcome of RT, and this has been in the form of altered fractionation, oxymimetic radiosensitizers, the use of concurrent chemotherapy, anti-angiogenic therapy and anti-growth factor receptor targeted therapies.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies and is known to most often present with symptomatology pertaining to local hepatic disease. Although HCC is known to metastasize to lungs, abdominal lymph nodes, adrenal glands and the vertebral column, it is rather rare to come across patients with skull metastasis. The manifestation of a solitary frontal bone metastasis leading to a painless lump over the forehead as the initial presenting feature of HCC is highly unusual.

A decade ago, lung cancer could conveniently be classified into two broad categories-either the small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC), or the non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), mainly to assist in further treatment related decision making. However, the understanding regarding the eligibility of adenocarcinoma histology for treatments with agents such as pemetrexed and bevacizumab made it a necessity for NSCLC to be classified into more specific sub-groups. Then, the availability of molecular targeted therapy with oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) such as gefitinib and erlotinib not only further emphasized the need for accurate sub-classification of lung cancer, but also heralded the important role of molecular profiling of lung adenocarcinomas.

Background: Tobacco products continue to be used in large quantities in India despite the mandatory inclusion of pictorial health warnings (PHWs) on all tobacco packaging. The circumstances as to how people could continue the use of tobacco to the point of developing head and neck cancer despite enhanced awareness about the ill effects of tobacco is the main focus of this study.

Materials And Methods: This study concerned patients with least 5-years history of tobacco use, having been diagnosed with histopathologically proven malignancies of the hypopharynx, larynx, oropharynx and oral cavity presenting at the Government Medical College-Haldwani, Nainital, India.

Background: Head and neck cancer without distant metastases is amenable to various modalities of treatment. However, the stage at presentation is a very important determinant for treatment success. The present study was conducted to determine the stage-wise presentation of non-metastatic head and neck cancer patients from the hilly regions in Kumaon division of Uttarakhand, India.

Context: Among patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell cancers (LAHNSCC), the prognosis after nonresponse or progression despite induction chemotherapy (IC) is dismal, and further treatment is often palliative in intent. Given that nonresponse to chemotherapy could indicate subsequent radioresistance, we intended to assess the outcomes with two different fractionation schemes.

Aims: To compare the outcomes of two fractionation schemes- 'standard' (consisting 3GyX5 daily fractions for 2 consecutive weeks) versus 'hybrid' (6GyX3 fractions on alternate days during the 1(st) week, followed by 2GyX5 daily fractions in the 2(nd) week).
