Ultrasonographic predictors of thyroid cancer in Bethesda III and IV thyroid nodules.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

February 2024

Division of Molecular Endocrinology, Department of Molecular Oncology, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Background: Bethesda III and IV thyroid nodules continue to be difficult to manage. Although molecular testing may assist in decision-making, it is expensive, not widely available, and not without pitfalls. The objective of this study is to assess whether certain thyroid ultrasonographic features may predict the risk of thyroid cancer in patients with Bethesda III and IV thyroid nodules and be used as additional decision-making tools to complement cytopathological results in deciding on diagnostic thyroidectomy.

Context: Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, spiritual reflection, and worship for Muslims worldwide. However, the Ramadan fast - which involves abstaining from all food and drink, sunrise to sunset for 29 days-30 days annually - may also influence physical health outcomes, especially relating to the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Objective: The literature from the top of the pyramid of evidence was gathered and synthesized for this comprehensive umbrella review and meta-analysis of meta-analyses in order to provide an overall conclusion on the impact of Ramadan fasting with regard to metabolic syndrome components.

Article Synopsis
  • - Insomnia disorder can lead to other psychological issues like anxiety and depression; thus, a tool to assess worries about sleep in Arabic was needed, leading to the validation of the Anxiety and Preoccupation about Sleep Questionnaire (APSQ).
  • - A comprehensive study with 523 Arabic-speaking participants utilized psychometric analysis, demonstrating excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.91), strong test-retest reliability (0.93), and good fit indices, confirming the APSQ's effectiveness as a measurement tool.
  • - The validated Arabic APSQ reliably measures concerns about sleep, showing significant correlations with established scales for insomnia and anxiety, making it a useful resource for clinical and research settings in Arabic-speaking populations.

Introduction and aim Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a serious concern in all healthcare facilities as they may lead to many serious consequences, like prolonged hospitalization, increased mortality and morbidity, and extra costs. Effective hand hygiene (HH) is the primary proven measure known to be effective in reducing the risk of HAIs in all healthcare settings. This study aimed to measure the healthcare workers' (HCWs) knowledge and perception of HH at government hospitals (GHs) in Bahrain.

  • The Athlete Sleep Behavior Questionnaire (ASBQ) is designed to spot poor sleep habits in athletes, and this meta-analysis evaluates its reliability.
  • The study found that the ASBQ has a good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.73) and a high test-retest reliability (ICC of 0.88), indicating it's a solid tool for monitoring athletes' sleep behavior over time.
  • The authors suggest that while the ASBQ is reliable, future research should focus on improving its consistency and testing it in various athletic groups.

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China; Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong SAR, China. Electronic address:

Diagnosis of dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) typically relies on a set of diagnostic clinical features, including decreased visual acuity, impaired color vision, presence of relative afferent pupillary defect, optic disc swelling and ancillary tests including visual field (VF), pattern visual evoked potential (pVEP), and apical crowding or optic nerve stretching on neuroimaging. We summarize various diagnostic methods to establish or rule out DON. A total of 95 studies (involving 4619 DON eyes) met the inclusion criteria.

Background: The goal of managing auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is to restore the children's ability to discriminate auditory information. Children who are not making sufficient progress in speech comprehension, and speech and language development after receiving adequate auditory re/habilitation and/or acoustic amplification may be candidates for cochlear implantation (CI). Despite the growing number of published literature on CI outcomes in children with ANSD, the current evidence is primarily based on case reports or retrospective chart reviews some of which had a limited number of children.
