With the use of specific genetic factors and recent developments in cellular reprogramming, it is now possible to generate lineage-committed cells or induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from readily available and common somatic cell types. However, there are still significant doubts regarding the safety and effectiveness of the current genetic methods for reprogramming cells, as well as the conventional culture methods for maintaining stem cells. Small molecules that target specific epigenetic processes, signaling pathways, and other cellular processes can be used as a complementary approach to manipulate cell fate to achieve a desired objective.

Article Synopsis
  • Paraquat (PQ) is a widely used herbicide that causes testicular damage, and currently, there are no effective treatments for this toxicity.
  • The study aimed to investigate the protective effects of the flavonoid Tectochrysin (TEC) against PQ-induced testicular damage in Sprague-Dawley rats over an 8-week trial.
  • Results showed that TEC significantly improved antioxidant levels, sperm health, and hormone levels while decreasing markers of inflammation and apoptosis, suggesting its potential as a protective agent against PQ toxicity.

Department of Business Administration, ILMA University, Karachi, Pakistan.

One of the industries that makes a significant contribution to the overall amount of greenhouse gas emissions around the globe is agriculture. In this regard, the use of bioenergy in the agricultural and food processing industries might benefit from the implementation of circular economy techniques. Despite the fact that just roughly 9% of the global economy is circular, there have been worldwide efforts to improve that reality.

An experiment was set up to investigate physiological responses of soybeans to silicon (Si) under normal light and shade conditions. Two soybean varieties, Nandou 12 (shade resistant), and Nan 032-4 (shade susceptible), were tested. Our results revealed that under shading, the net assimilation rate and the plant growth were significantly reduced.

Kidney-yang deficiency syndrome (KYDS) infected with the influenza virus is a suitable model to imitate a population at high-risk to influenza infection with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. However, the specific molecular mechanisms underlying this disease remain unclear. A stable reference gene is essential as an internal control for molecular biology research of this condition.

Anti-Proliferative and Apoptosis-Inducing Activity of Acacia Modesta and Opuntia Monocantha Extracts on HeLa Cells.

Asian Pac J Cancer Prev

October 2020

Centre of Research in Molecular Medicine, Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, University of Lahore, Defence Road, Lahore, Pakistan.

Background: Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Numerous phytochemicals from plants have shown antineoplastic effects via programmed cell death (apoptosis). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of anti-proliferative and apoptosis-inducing activity of Acacia modesta and Opuntia monocantha against HeLa cells.
