The radical-pair mechanism is one of two distinct mechanisms used to explain the navigation of birds in geomagnetic fields, however little research has been done to explore the role of quantum entanglement in this mechanism. In this paper we study the lifetime of radical-pair entanglement corresponding to the magnitude and direction of magnetic fields to show that the entanglement lasts long enough in birds to be used for navigation. We also find that the birds appear to not be able to orient themselves directly based on radical-pair entanglement due to a lack of orientation sensitivity of the entanglement in the geomagnetic field.

The purpose of this review is to describe and evaluate education programs for teens with asthma. Although asthma educational programs for children are plentiful, this is not the case for adolescents. The developmental tasks of adolescence require asthma education programs that are uniquely tailored to this age group.

This pilot study used a pretest and posttest design to examine the effect of a school-based intervention, Coping Skills Training, among teens with asthma (N = 39) aged 14 to 18 years randomly assigned to treatment and control groups from three midwestern high schools. Variables included asthma self-efficacy, social support, asthma-related quality of life, peak expiratory flow rate, asthma diary symptoms, and rescue medication usage. The treatment group scored significantly higher on self-efficacy (p < .

Adolescents have unique health considerations as they transition from parent-managed healthcare to personal responsibility for health behavior. One question to consider is the goodness-of-fit of available theoretical models for explaining and predicting adolescent health-promoting behavior. This integrative review explored Pender's health promotion model in relation to adolescent health.

Nystatin (nys) is an antifungal agent that preferentially forms ion channels in membranes containing the sterol, ergosterol (erg). The structure of the nystatin channel is not clear, but it is known that multiple nystatin monomers must aggregate to form channels in a sterol-rich membrane. When nys/erg containing vesicles are fused to a sterol-free bilayer, characteristic spikelike changes in membrane conductance are observed.

The purpose of this study was to examine nurses' attitudes toward caring for patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and factors that might be related to these attitudes. One hundred thirty-eight (138) registered nurses responded to an anonymous mail survey. The survey instrument assessed the subjects' attitudes toward caring for AIDS patients along five dimensions: (1) fears and concerns relating to caring for AIDS patients, (2) attitudes toward health care utilization by AIDS patients, (3) attitudes toward caring for terminally ill patients, (4) attitudes toward homosexuality, and (5) attitudes of significant others toward AIDS patients.

The quality of life for infants and children is often dependent on the adequacy of the prenatal care pregnant women receive. From July through to December 1985, 15% of pregnant women in one Midwestern county were identified as having inadequate prenatal care. The purposes of the study were to identify and analyse the reasons women in that county gave for not obtaining adequate prenatal care.
