Background: In 2008, bevacizumab received accelerated Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for use in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Based on the pre-clinical and preliminary clinical activity of the trastuzumab and bevacizumab combination, ECOG-ACRIN E1105 trial was developed to determine if the addition of bevacizumab to a chemotherapy and trastuzumab combination for first-line therapy would improve progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with HER2-positive MBC.
Findings: 96 patients were randomized to receive standard first-line chemotherapy and trastuzumab with or without bevacizumab between November 2007 and October 2009, and 93 began protocol therapy.
Purpose: Popliteal artery laceration is a devastating complication in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Its anatomic position relative to the tibia has been studied using ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging. This is the first study performed in a laboratory using radiographic measurements to determine if increased flexion and subluxation of the knee increase the distance between the tibia and popliteal artery.

Background And Objectives: Metformin is one of the primary pharmacologic agents for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, it has been associated with interference in vitamin B12 absorption and deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency and T2DM can present diagnostic challenges for polyneuropathy.

Central venous catheters (CVCs) have many benefits in patient care but are associated with increasing risks with catheter duration. A level II trauma-certified community hospital sought to decrease CVC duration utilizing a daily assessment algorithm in the critical care unit. After implementation, CVC days decreased from 490 CVC days per 1,000 patient days to 452 (odds ratio 0.

Background: Good Samaritan Laws are a harm reduction policy intended to facilitate a reduction in fatal opioid overdoses by enabling bystanders, first responders, and health care providers to assist individuals experiencing an overdose without facing civil or criminal liability. However, Good Samaritan Laws may not be reaching their full impact in many communities due to a lack of knowledge of protections under these laws, distrust in law enforcement, and fear of legal consequences among potential bystanders. The purpose of this study was to develop a systems-level understanding of the factors influencing bystander responses to opioid overdose in the context of Connecticut's Good Samaritan Laws and identify high-leverage policies for improving opioid-related outcomes and implementation of these laws in Connecticut (CT).

Introduction Falls during hospitalization are a leading cause of preventable trauma-related injuries. Factors associated with fall risk include an unfamiliar environment, changes in health status, and efficacy based on the home environment. Assessing fall efficacy with an individualized prevention plan can decrease falls.

The role of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in Parkinson's disease (PD) is not well understood, even though it is critical for neuronal structure and signaling. This systematic review identified the top deregulated ECM-related pathways in studies that used gene set enrichment analyses (GSEA) to document transcriptomic, proteomic, or genomic alterations in PD. PubMed and Google scholar were searched for transcriptomics, proteomics, or genomics studies that employed GSEA on data from PD tissues or cells and reported ECM-related pathways among the top-10 most enriched versus controls.

We aimed to investigate the association between social determinants of health and chronic opioid therapy. We conducted a retrospective analysis of electronic health records from five family medicine and internal medicine clinics in Oregon in 2020 and 2021. Our outcome variable was whether a patient was receiving chronic opioid therapy for chronic non-cancer pain.

Background: With the population aging, the number of people living with dementia is expected to rise, which, in turn, is expected to lead to an increase in the prevalence of missing incidents due to critical wandering. However, the estimated prevalence of missing incidents due to dementia is inconclusive in some jurisdictions and overlooked in others.
Objective: The aims of the study were to examine (1) the demographic, psychopathological, and environmental antecedents to missing incidents due to critical wandering among older adult MedicAlert Foundation Canada (hereinafter MedicAlert) subscribers; and (2) the characteristics and outcomes of the missing incidents.

Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with several adverse clinical outcomes. In this study, we assessed the association between NAFLD and several clinical outcome measures in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and atrial fibrillation (AF).
Methods: We queried the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) between 2016 and 2019 for adult patients who were hospitalized with DM and AF.

Objective: To evaluate the proximal effects of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) on a validated measure of brain abnormalities in infants born at ≤32 weeks' gestational age (GA) using magnetic resonance imaging at term-equivalent age.
Study Design: In a multisite prospective cohort study, 395 infants born at ≤32 weeks' GA, underwent 3T magnetic resonance imaging scan between 39 and 44 weeks' postmenstrual age. A single neuroradiologist, blinded to clinical history, evaluated the standardized Kidokoro global brain abnormality score as the primary outcome.

E-cigarettes have been known to cause varied poor health outcomes prior to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but after the impact of COVID-19, evidence came out that was, in some instances, not as expected regarding the severity of COVID-19 among e-cigarette users (vapers). A meta-analysis was performed on the available evidence to comprehensively find the effect of COVID-19 on existing or past e-cigarette users (vapers). The Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines were used to perform this meta-analysis.

Background: A splenic artery pseudoaneurysm is a rare pathology that occurs mainly secondary to pancreatitis, abdominal trauma, peptic ulcers, pancreatic and gastric cancers, and infections. It is best diagnosed using computed tomography angiography and typically treated using endovascular embolization and, in some cases, open or laparoscopic surgery. In this report, we present a case of a ruptured mycotic splenic artery pseudoaneurysm containing Histoplasma capsulatum, which to our knowledge is the first case to report a mycotic splenic artery pseudoaneurysm of this nature.

Rituximab (R) maintenance after induction is often used. Thus, the open-label, randomized phase 2 ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group E1411 trial was designed to test 2 questions: (1) does addition of bortezomib to BR induction (BVR) and/or (2) addition of lenalidomide to rituximab (LR) maintenance improve progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with treatment-naïve MCL? From 2012 to 2016, 373 previously untreated patients, 87% aged ≥60 years, were enrolled in this trial.

Introduction: Bystander provision of naloxone is a key modality to reduce opioid overdose-related death. Naloxone training courses are available, but no standardized program exists. As part of a bystander empowerment course, we created and evaluated a brief naloxone training module.

Determining if a patient will need an SICU admission would not only allow for the appropriate allocation of resources and personnel but also permit targeted clinical management of these patients with the goal of improving morbidity and mortality outcomes. The purpose of this study was to identify specific risk factors predictive of SICU admission in a population of geriatric hip fracture patients.

Introduction: Take-home naloxone (THN) is being made available across rural Appalachia to curb opioid overdose fatalities. Despite this initiative, some opioid users do not possess naloxone, and if they do, do not administer it to others.
Purpose: Research findings on risk factors that contribute to opioid overdose are presented.

Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious postoperative complication associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Identifying patients at risk for AKI is important for risk stratification and management. This study aimed to develop an AKI risk prediction model for colectomy and determine if the operative approach (laparoscopic versus open) alters the influence of predictive factors through an interaction term analysis.
