In the United States, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) is a specialty of dentistry that focuses on the management of injuries, diseases, and defects of the head, neck, face, and jaws. The present manuscript is an article on education and training of OMS residents in the United States. It a lso briefly describes the scope of practice of the specialty.

Mechanical Thrombectomy in Africa: A Challenging Future.

Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) has revolutionized the management of proximal large vessel occlusions (LVOs) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), improving long-term outcomes compared to standard treatments. However, despite its success in high-income countries, the widespread implementation of MT in Africa remains limited. With Africa experiencing one of the highest stroke burdens globally, this study examines the barriers impeding the adoption of MT in the region.

An Unusual Approach to Diagnosing Stump Appendicitis Using Colonoscopy.

Stump appendicitis is a known post-appendectomy entity causing right lower quadrant abdominal pain. Usually, a patient with a prior history of appendectomy presents to the emergency room with right lower quadrant abdominal pain and stump appendicitis, which is visualized on computed tomography of the abdomen pelvis. We report a case of stump appendicitis diagnosed by colonoscopy and subsequently confirmed by surgery.

Traumatic Bilateral Bronchial Injury Requiring Pneumonectomy.

High-energy blunt thoracic trauma is a highly morbid condition. When a pneumonectomy is required in such a setting, the mortality rate increases significantly. Here, we present a case of a motor vehicular crash (MVC) in which the patient suffered bilateral bronchial injuries requiring emergent thoracotomy, pneumonectomy, bronchial stenting, and initiation of venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO).

Evaluation of Risk Factors for Dupilumab-Associated Ocular Sequelae in the Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis.

Dupilumab is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 (IL-13) signaling and is used in the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) in those six months or older who are uncontrolled on or cannot tolerate topical treatments. Ocular surface disease is a recognized adverse effect of dupilumab, yet few studies describe the risk factors for developing ocular adverse effects. There are no standardized recommendations for monitoring patients on this medication.

Complications associated with use of the Wolverine cutting balloon: insights from the Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database.

Objectives: The Wolverine cutting balloon (CB) (Boston Scientific) is a specialized balloon catheter with microsurgical blades that is used for balloon-resistant lesions. The Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database serves as a repository for reports of medical device complications. The aim of this study was to analyze complications associated with CB use during percutaneous coronary intervention in real-world contemporary practice.

Improving Cognitive Empathy Through Traumatic Brain Injury Experiential Learning: A Novel Mixed Methods Approach for Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Education.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to gauge the impacts of cognitive empathy training experiential learning on traumatic brain injury (TBI) knowledge, awareness, confidence, and empathy in a pilot study of speech-language pathology graduate students.

Method: A descriptive quasi-experimental convergent parallel mixed methods design intervention pilot study (QUAL + QUANT) was conducted with a diverse convenience sample of 19 first- and second-year speech-language pathology graduate students who engaged in a half-day TBI point-of-view simulation. The simulation was co-constructed through a participatory design with those living with TBI based on Kolb's experiential learning model and followed the recommendations for point-of-view simulation ethics.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in stoma reversal surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Stoma reversal surgery is known for relatively high complication rates. While Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols are extensively validated for colorectal surgery, their use in stoma reversal remains underexplored. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates clinical outcomes of stoma reversal surgery under ERAS protocols compared to standard care (SC) practices.

Intraoperative Type B Aortic Dissection With Malperfusion in a Patient With Marfan Syndrome.

We present the case of a 72-year-old man diagnosed with an aortic root aneurysm who was then diagnosed with Marfan syndrome. The patient suffered an intraoperative type B dissection with lower extremity malperfusion managed with an axillary-bifemoral extra-anatomic bypass.

Surgical Site Infection After Sacral Neuromodulation: Impact of Postoperative Antibiotics.

Importance: There are limited data to guide practices to reduce surgical site infections following sacral neuromodulation; however, many surgeons prescribe prophylactic postoperative antibiotics after device implantation.

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the proportion of patients with sacral neuromodulation device-associated surgical site infections after use of prophylactic postoperative antibiotics versus none.

Study Design: This was a multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing sacral neuromodulation device implantation at 11 institutions from January 2014 to December 2023, comparing outcomes in patients who did versus did not receive prophylactic postoperative antibiotic treatment.

Comparative outcomes of Palmer, Umbilical Veress needle, and open entry techniques in robotic-assisted surgery: a propensity-matched analysis of 9482 patients.

Robotic-assisted surgery offers several advantages over traditional methods, such as reduced blood loss and fewer complications. Establishing pneumoperitoneum is a critical step, with two primary techniques: the Veress needle (closed) and the Hasson (open) technique. Despite extensive studies in laparoscopic surgery, limited data exist regarding their use in robotic surgery.

The effects of the 2022 computed tomography IV contrast shortage on the emergency department diagnosis of abdominal pathology.

Background: A COVID-19 lockdown in China resulted in a global disruption in IV contrast media production, which resulted in a hospital system advisory limiting contrast studies. The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of the IV contrast shortage on the ED diagnosis of emergent abdominopelvic pathology.

Methods: This was a retrospective multi-center study performed across six EDs.

Impact of the Good Samaritan Law on bystander intervention willingness and perceived legal risks in India.

Background: Road traffic crashes (RTCs) are a global health burden, particularly in India, where response times for first responders can be prolonged. Prior to enactment of a Good Samaritan Law (GSL) in 2016, involved bystanders could face criminal and financial liability for assisting at an RTC site. This study evaluates the impact of GSL on bystander RTC attitudes, awareness, and experiences in India, comparing outcomes pre- and post-GSL implementation across metropolitan cities (MCs) and nonmetropolitan cities (NMCs).

Do Emergency Department Observation Units Help Prevent Revisits for Patients with Renal Colic?

Introduction: Renal colic is generally considered a diagnosis appropriate for discharge home once pain is adequately controlled and no other admission criteria are met. The increasing prevalence of ED observation units (EDOU) represent another disposition option for patients with renal colic. In this study, we sought to describe the rates of 14-day revisits for renal colic among patients placed in an EDOU as compared to those discharged from the ED.

Efficacy of an online self-management program for chronic burn pain: A randomized controlled trial of the Take Charge of Burn Pain program.

This randomized controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of an online self-management program, "Take Charge of Burn Pain (TCBP)," for 96 individuals living with chronic burn pain. Participants were randomly assigned to either the 7-week TCBP program integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques, pain education, and self-management strategies or an attention control group focused on general burn recovery information. Assessments conducted at baseline, post-treatment, and 2- and 5-month follow-ups included measures of pain severity, pain interference, pain self-efficacy, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and depression.

The effects of message framing on US police chiefs' support for interventions for opioid use disorder: a randomized survey experiment.

Background: US chiefs of police hold significant influence over the perceived acceptability and appropriateness of interventions for opioid use disorder (OUD) among the public, elected officials, and subordinate officers. This study assessed whether police chiefs' support for such interventions was sensitive to framing an intervention's benefits in terms that emphasize public health and harm reduction outcomes, versus terms typically indicative of public safety outcomes.

Methods: A two-armed survey utilizing a randomized, between-subjects design tested framing-based variance in support among US chiefs of police for overdose prevention centers, syringe service programs (SSPs), Good Samaritan laws, police naloxone distribution, trustworthiness of officers in recovery from OUD, and related propositions.

Outcomes Associated With Airway Management of Adult Trauma Patients Admitted to Surgical Intensive Care.

Introduction: Advanced airway management and ventilation of trauma patients are often needed during acute stabilization and resuscitation and later, in those admitted. In addition to endotracheal intubation for advanced airway management, tracheostomy is commonly used in critically ill patients when prolonged mechanical ventilation is required. However, the outcomes associated with airway management approaches and the timing of a tracheostomy in critically ill patients are mixed.
