Background: While progress has been made in reducing HIV incidence rates among cisgender women, it continues to fall short of reaching the goal of ending the HIV epidemic with no new cases.

Objective: This study aims to use innovative electronic methods (e.g.

Background: A significant proportion of individuals with symptoms of sexually transmitted infection (STI) delay or avoid seeking healthcare, and digital diagnostic tools may prompt them to seek healthcare earlier. Unfortunately, none of the currently available tools fully mimic clinical assessment or cover a wide range of STIs.

Methods: We prospectively invited attendees presenting with STI-related symptoms at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre to answer gender-specific questionnaires covering the symptoms of 12 common STIs using a computer-assisted self-interviewing system between 2015 and 2018.

Background: The prevalence of syphilis, Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) in men who have sex with men (MSM) is very high. As these bacterial sexually transmitted infections (bSTIs) are frequently asymptomatic, they are often undiagnosed and therefore untreated. We aimed to characterize the profile of MSM who reported bSTI screening and diagnosis in the previous 12 months, and to identify the factors associated with a diagnosis of a bSTI among MSM in France.

Sexually transmitted infection rates are increasing in the United States, with significant increases in the rates of syphilis among patients of reproductive age and, subsequently, congenital syphilis. Syphilis screening is recommended in sexually active patients 15 to 44 years of age in communities with high syphilis rates and in all pregnant patients at the time of diagnosis or prenatal intake, in the third trimester, and at delivery. Screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea is currently recommended in asymptomatic, sexually active patients younger than 25 years, as well as in older patients with risk factors.

: Culture-negative vertebral osteomyelitis presents a significant diagnostic challenge. () is a typically benign commensal organism of the upper respiratory tract that rarely causes invasive infections, warranting cautious interpretation if isolated in a single positive culture. This case study details a 62-year-old male diagnosed with vertebral osteomyelitis caused by , examining diagnostic challenges, treatment, and outcomes.

Epidemiology of gonorrhea in countries of the Middle East and North Africa: systematic review, meta analyses, and meta regressions.

BMC Glob Public Health

August 2024

Infectious Disease Epidemiology Group, Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, Cornell University, Qatar Foundation-Education City, Doha, Qatar.

Background: The epidemiology of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) infection in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remains poorly understood, despite the global recognition of its disease burden and the growing concern regarding antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to systematically review the evidence on NG prevalence in MENA, estimate the pooled mean prevalence across different populations, and explore population-level associations with prevalence as well as sources of between-study heterogeneity.

Methods: The study conducted a systematic review, risk of bias assessment, meta-analyses, and meta-regressions, utilizing both published and unpublished evidence sourced from international, regional, and national databases, in adherence to PRISMA guidelines.

Introduction: Despite escalating rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States (US), there has been progressive divestment of sexual health services leading to the reliance on emergency departments (EDs) for sexual healthcare, particularly among vulnerable populations. The Sexual Wellness Clinic (SWC), a novel care delivery model operating in collaboration with the ED, offers comprehensive sexual health services.

Objectives: This study aims to analyze the demographics, STI positivity, and HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among patients accessing the SWC.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae has developed resistance to all antibiotics recommended for treatment and reports of reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone, the last-line treatment, are increasing. Since many asymptomatic infections remain undiagnosed and most diagnosed infections do not undergo antibiotic susceptibility testing, surveillance systems may underestimate resistant infections. In this modeling study, we simulated the spread of a new strain of ceftriaxone non-susceptible N.

Define microbiological characteristics of pathogens causing lower urinary tract infections (LUTI), frequency of (CT) or (GC), and accuracy of self-diagnosis by college women with LUTI symptoms. Sexually active women with LUTI symptoms attending a large south-eastern university. Participants completed a 15-question Qualtrics™ survey, provided urine for urinalysis and culture and a self-collected vaginal swab for CT/GC testing.

Background: Most Neisseria gonorrhoea (GC) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infections in men who have sex with men (MSM) are diagnosed at extragenital sites. However, testing at these sites is often lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine if a standardized questionnaire administered by physicians and clinical assistants improves documentation of sex activity and increases extragenital testing and diagnoses of GC and CT among MSM.

Background: Neisseria gonorrhoeae is one of the recognised global antimicrobial resistance priorities. Extended spectrum cephalosporins, the last remaining reliable antimicrobial, increasingly fail to clear N. gonorrhoeae infections, especially pharyngeal gonorrhoea, leading to limited future treatment options.

Introduction: Drug-resistant is an urgent threat to public health. Novel prevention and treatment strategies are emerging, including immunizations, pharmacologic post-exposure prophylaxis, rapid molecular resistance assays, and novel antibiotics. However, where and how such strategies are optimally implemented remains unclear.

The spread of multidrug-resistant strains of poses a great challenge in gonorrhea treatment. At present, vaccination is the best strategy for gonorrhea control. However, given the extensive antigenic variability of , the effectiveness of monovalent vaccines is limited.

Background: Reportable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have increased in California, with dramatic rises in prenatal and congenital syphilis. In response, in 2018 Planned Parenthood Northern California implemented 2 opt-out screening protocols: (1) HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis co-screening for pregnant patients at pregnancy diagnosis and (2) linking HIV and syphilis screening for all patients.

Methods: Using qualitative analyses, we explored implementation barriers and facilitators that can be addressed by clinical leadership and staff to expand uptake of enhanced screening protocols.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess STI testing and treatment rates, along with pregnancy services, for sexual assault survivors in U.S. emergency departments (EDs) from 2019 to 2023.
  • - Analysis of 49,047 ED visits revealed that only about 18-34% of female patients aged 15-44 received STI tests, and roughly 40% were neither tested nor treated for gonorrhea or chlamydia.
  • - Despite low testing and treatment rates, the positivity rates for chlamydia and gonorrhea were significant, indicating a critical need for improved healthcare responses for sexual assault survivors in EDs.

Article Synopsis
  • Extragenital Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections are common among men who have sex with men (MSM), and self-sampling may provide easier access to testing for those hesitant to visit health clinics.
  • A study conducted in China compared the diagnostic accuracy of self-collected specimens to clinician-taken specimens, analyzing samples from 325 participants at six STI clinics.
  • The findings demonstrated high agreement and sensitivity of self-sampling for both CT and NG infections, with 62% of MSM showing a preference for self-sampling, indicating it’s an acceptable alternative to traditional clinician-based testing.
