Aim: Early life stress can induce epigenetic changes through genetic and environmental interactions and is a risk factor for depression. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression and antidepressant drug action. We investigated epigenetic changes at the BDNF exon I promoter in the hippocampus of adult rats subjected to maternal separation (MS) during early life and treated with an antidepressant drug as adults.

Effects of escitalopram and paroxetine on mTORC1 signaling in the rat hippocampus under chronic restraint stress.

BMC Neurosci

April 2017

Paik Institute for Clinical Research, Inje University, 633-165 Gaegum-dong, Jin-gu, Busan, 614-735, Republic of Korea.

Background: Recent studies have suggested that the activation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling may be related to antidepressant action. Therefore, the present study evaluated whether antidepressant drugs would exert differential effects on mTOR signaling in the rat hippocampus under conditions of chronic restraint stress. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to restraint stress for 6 h/days for 21 days with either escitalopram (10 mg/kg) or paroxetine (10 mg/kg) administered after the chronic stress procedure.

Glucocorticoid receptor (GR) promoter I is susceptible to epigenetic changes induced by environmental influences. Early life stress (ELS) has a persistent impact on GR expression, as well as behavior, in adult rodents via epigenetic changes of GR promoter I. Moreover, various stressors can induce histone modifications in this region during adulthood.

Alcohol reduces cross-frequency theta-phase gamma-amplitude coupling in resting electroencephalography.

Alcohol Clin Exp Res

March 2014

Neuropsychiatry Research Laboratory, Gongju National Hospital, Chungnam, South Korea; Addiction Brain Center, Eulji Addiction Institute, Gangnam Eulji Hospital, Seoul, South Korea.

Background: The electrophysiological inhibitory mechanism of cognitive control for alcohol remains largely unknown. The purpose of the study was to compare electroencephalogram (EEG) power spectra and cross-frequency phase-amplitude coupling (CFPAC) at rest and during a simple subtraction task after acute alcohol ingestion.

Methods: Twenty-one healthy subjects participated in this study.

Correlation of risk-taking propensity with cross-frequency phase-amplitude coupling in the resting EEG.

Clin Neurophysiol

November 2013

Department of Bio and Brain Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Daejeon 305-701, South Korea; Neuropsychiatry Research Laboratory, Department of Psychiatry, Gongju National Hospital, Chungcheongnam-do 314-200, South Korea; Addiction Brain Center, Eulji Addiction Institute, Gangnam Eulji Hospital, Seoul 135-010, South Korea.

Objective: Recent evidence has suggested that the weak inhibitory influence of the prefrontal cortex on the subcortical structures may be responsible for risk-taking behaviour. The aim was to determine the possibility that this weakness in top-down control is reflected in changes in the cross-frequency phase-amplitude coupling (CFPAC) in the electroencephalography (EEG).

Methods: Nineteen-channel EEGs were recorded from 50 healthy volunteers with their eyes closed before risk-taking propensity was assessed by behavioural measures, the domain-specific risk-taking (DOSPERT) scale and the Barrett impulsiveness scale (BIS).

Neurosci Lett

July 2011

Neuropsychiatry Research Laboratory, Department of Psychiatry, Gongju National Hospital, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea.

Although theta-gamma coupling is known to reflect memory-related processes, it is unclear whether it has a relationship with memory ability. Here, we investigated the relationship between theta phase and gamma power coupling (TGC) and scores obtained regarding memory tasks. Thirty-one older subjects performed a spatial delayed match-to-sample task (SDMST) during EEG recording.
