Gaucher Disease Involving Virchow's Lymph Node: a Case Report.

Gaucher disease is a metabolic storage disorder caused by a mutation in the lysosomal enzyme B-glucocerebrosidase. This disease is usually manifested in new born infants, however, an exceptional case of this disease in adult has been recently reported. A 21-year-old Caucasian patient was diagnosed with Gaucher disease, demonstrating Virchow's lymphatic node enlargement and mild splenomegaly.

Validation of the Russian Version of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS-Ru) and Normative Data.

: The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) is widely used to assess psychopathology. The Russian version (PANSSRu) has not been validated, and normative data for the Russian-speaking population currently do not exist. The aims of this study were to 1) complete linguistic validation for the PANSSRu, 2) perform psychometric validation of the Russian translation, and 3) present norms for the Russian and Belarusian population.

Nano- and microscale mechanical properties of erythrocytes in hereditary spherocytosis.

Hereditary spherocytosis (HS), an erythrocyte membranopathy, is a heterogeneous disease, even at the level of the erythrocyte population. The paper aims at studying the mechanical properties (the Young's modulus, median and RMS roughness of friction force maps; fractal dimension, lacunarity and spatial distribution parameters of lateral force maps) of the cell surface layer of the erythrocytes of two different morphologies (discocytes and spherocytes) in HS using atomic force microscopy. The results of spatial-spectral and fractal analysis showed that the mechanical property maps of the HS spherocyte surface were more structurally homogeneous compared to the maps of HS discocytes.

Microcystic, elongated, fragmented (MELF)-pattern is an unusual morphology of myometrial invasive front in endometrioid endometrial carcinoma (EA). The aim of the study was to investigate potential correlation between MELF-pattern and peritumoral inflammatory immune response. A total of 96 out of 368 patients were included in this study.

Background And Aims: To investigate the uptake of hepatitis C virus (HCV) therapy among HIV/HCV-coinfected patients in the pan-European EuroSIDA study between 2011 and 2016.

Methods: All HCV-RNA+ patients were included. Baseline was defined as latest of anti-HCV+, January 2011 or enrolment in EuroSIDA.

Epidemiology of hip fracture in Belarus: development of a country-specific FRAX model and its comparison to neighboring country models.

Unlabelled: Fracture probabilities resulting from the newly generated FRAX model for Belarus based on regional estimates of the hip fracture incidence were compared with FRAX models of neighboring countries. Differences between the country-specific FRAX patterns and the rank orders of fracture probabilities were modest.

Objective: This paper describes the epidemiology of hip fractures in Belarus that was used to develop the country-specific fracture prediction FRAX® tool and illustrates its features compared to models for the neighboring countries of Poland, Russia, and Lithuania.

Objective: The extent to which controlled and uncontrolled HIV interact with ageing, European region of care and calendar year of follow-up is largely unknown.

Method: EuroSIDA participants were followed after 1 January 2001 and grouped according to current HIV progression risk; high risk (CD4 cell count ≤350/μl, viral load ≥10 000 copies/ml), low risk (CD4 cell count ≥500 cells/μl, viral load <50 copies/ml) and intermediate (other combinations). Poisson regression investigated interactions between HIV progression risk, age, European region of care and year of follow-up and incidence of AIDS or non-AIDS events.

Management of MDR-TB in HIV co-infected patients in Eastern Europe: Results from the TB:HIV study.

Objectives: Mortality among HIV patients with tuberculosis (TB) remains high in Eastern Europe (EE), but details of TB and HIV management remain scarce.

Methods: In this prospective study, we describe the TB treatment regimens of patients with multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB and use of antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Results: A total of 105 HIV-positive patients had MDR-TB (including 33 with extensive drug resistance) and 130 pan-susceptible TB.

The Potential Roles of MELF-Pattern, Microvessel Density, and VEGF Expression in Survival of Patients with Endometrioid Endometrial Carcinoma: A Morphometrical and Immunohistochemical Analysis of 100 Cases.

Background: In this study, we hypothesized that microcystic, elongated, fragmented (MELF)-pattern, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression by cancer cells and microvessel density of cancer stroma may be associated with progression of endometrioid adenocarcinoma.

Methods: The study used data from the Belarus Cancer Registry and archival histological material of 100 patients with retrospectively known good (survival) and poor (disease progression and death) outcomes. All cases were immunohistochemically stained for CD34 and VEGF.

Fractal dimension (D) is one of the important parameters in the description of object's properties in different fields including biology and medicine. The present paper is focused on the application of the fractal dimension (the box counting dimension) in the analysis of the properties of cell surface on the base of its images obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Fractal dimension of digital 3D AFM images depends on interpoint distances determined by the scanning step in the XY-plane and Z-scale factor t.

Long-term effectiveness of unboosted atazanavir plus abacavir/lamivudine in subjects with virological suppression: A prospective cohort study.

Effectiveness data of an unboosted atazanavir (ATV) with abacavir/lamivudine (ABC/3TC) switch strategy in clinical routine are scant.We evaluated treatment outcomes of ATV + ABC/3TC in pretreated subjects in the EuroSIDA cohort when started with undetectable plasma HIV-1 viral load (pVL), performing a time to loss of virological response (TLOVR <50 copies/mL) and a snapshot analysis at 48, 96, and 144 weeks. Virological failure (VF) was defined as confirmed pVL >50 copies/mL.

[The higher education at the post-Soviet territories: the long echo of the Bologna process].

The objective of the present work was to analyze the possibilities envisaged by the Bologna system for the improvement of the quality of higher medical education at the post-Soviet territories. Any academic innovations including, in the first place, the accession to the Bologna process should be assessed in terms of their influence on the quality of education. This article describes the main factors responsible for the impaired quality of specialist training and the unjustified growth in the number of students in the combination with the loss of motivation to study.

Auditing HIV Testing Rates across Europe: Results from the HIDES 2 Study.

European guidelines recommend the routine offer of an HIV test in patients with a number of AIDS-defining and non-AIDS conditions believed to share an association with HIV; so called indicator conditions (IC). Adherence with this guidance across Europe is not known. We audited HIV testing behaviour in patients accessing care for a number of ICs.

[The experience with the reconstruction of the superoposterior wall of the external auditory meatus during stapedoplasty].

The objective of the present study was to improve the effectiveness of stapedoplasty by developing the method for the prevention of the formation of retraction pockets in the tympanic membrane and cicatrical fixation of auditory ossicles. A total of 60 patients presenting with grade I-II otosclerosis and conductive or mixed-type hearing impairment were surgically treated during the period from 2008 to 2014. Twenty four of these patients had undergone stapedoplasty in the preceding period in different clinics that either failed to improve their conditions or resulted in their deterioration.

Hepatitis C seroconversions in HIV infection across Europe: which regions and patient groups are affected?

Background & Aims: In the last decade, several outbreaks of sexually acquired acute hepatitis C (HCV) infection have been described in HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM). The aims of this study were to determine whether there has been an increase in the number of acute HCV infections in different parts of Europe.

Methods: HCV seroconversion was defined as an HCV-antibody test change from negative to positive within the observation period in EuroSIDA.

Thrombocytopenia is associated with an increased risk of cancer during treated HIV disease.

Objective: To assess the relationship between platelet counts and risk of AIDS and non-AIDS-defining events.

Design: Prospective cohort.

Methods: EuroSIDA patients with at least one platelet count were followed from baseline (first platelet ≥ 1 January 2005) until last visit or death.

[The role of the perinatal transmission and persistence of human papilloma virus in the development of juvenile respiratory papillomatosis].

This review paper presents the results of the recent studies designed to elucidate the etiopathogenetic role ofhuman papilloma virus infection in the development of respiratory papillomatosis in the children. Special attention is given to the possible pathways and mechanisms of the mother-to-child transmission of papilloma virus, its frequency and risk factors during pregnancy and in the postnatal period. The results of investigations into the frequency of papilloma virus infection in the children are presented along withrisk factors contributing to its persistence and the development ofjuvenile respiratory papillomatosis.

Long term effectiveness of once-daily unboosted atazanavir plus abacavir/lamivudine as a switch strategy in subjects with virological suppression.

Background: Use of unboosted atazanavir (ATV400) is approved in the US but not in Europe (1). Due to pharmacokinetic interactions it should not be used with tenofovir but can be used with abacavir/lamivudine (ABC/3TC) (1, 2) (3). Effectiveness data of ATV400+ABC/3TC as a switch strategy in clinical routine however are scant.

Pustular secondary syphilis: report of three cases and review of the literature.
