Spinal bone lesions encompass a wide array of pathologies, spanning from benign abnormalities to aggressive malignancies, such as diffusely localized metastases. Early detection and accurate differentiation of the underlying diseases is crucial for every patient's clinical treatment and outcome, with radiological imaging being a core element in the diagnostic pathway. Across numerous pathologies and imaging techniques, deep learning (DL) models are progressively considered a valuable resource in the clinical setting.

January 2025

Department of Cardiology, Cerrahpasa School of Medicine, Cerrahpasa/Fatih, Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa, Kocamustafapasa Street, 34098, Istanbul, Turkey.

Patients on double antiplatelet treatment who need early in-hospital coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are at high risk of major bleeding. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of ticagrelor preloading on CABG related bleeding in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) initially managed with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). Patients with the diagnosis of STEMI who were managed with pPCI and underwent subsequent early (4-7 days following pPCI) or delayed (> 7 days following pPCI) on-pump CABG surgery were included.

Purpose: To evaluate whether unrepaired interportal capsulotomy presents with capsular defect on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 5 years after primary hip arthroscopy and to determine its effect on functional results and findings of osteoarthritis on radiographs or MRI scans.

Methods: Patients with femoroacetabular impingement (without arthritis or dysplasia) were retrospectively reviewed after arthroscopic labral repair or debridement and femoroplasty through interportal capsulotomy without closure. Patients were assessed preoperatively and at a minimum of 5 years postoperatively using patient-reported outcomes (Hip Outcome Score-Activities of Daily Living scale, modified Harris Hip Score, and visual analog scale pain score), radiographic measures, and MRI scans.

World Neurosurg

September 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Faculty of Medicine, Istinye University, Istanbul, Turkey. Electronic address:

Introduction: Achieving watertight dural closure without grafts via the retrosigmoid approach can be challenging, contributing to a significant rate of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks. This study describes a dural incision technique for achieving primary dural closure without grafts following the retrosigmoid approach and presents clinical data from the authors' experience.

Methods: Clinical and surgical data of 227 patients who underwent the dural incision technique following the retrosigmoid approach for various pathologies were retrospectively reviewed.

Objective: Electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy (ECG LVH) holds significant clinical importance in cardiovascular disease. Pathological processes that lead to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) also induce remodeling and impair left atrial (LA) function. Atrial function can be assessed using speckle-tracking echocardiography.

Mesenteric Panniculitis as a Side Effect of Nivolumab in a Patient with Larnyngeal Cancer.

Niger J Clin Pract

June 2024

Department of Medical Oncology, Dicle University, School of Medicine, Diyarbakır, Turkey.

Mesenteric panniculitis is rare, usually idiopathic, caused by inflammation of the fatty tissue of the mesentery, especially in the small intestine. The relation between cancer and mesenteric panniculitis is unclear. In some studies, mesenteric pannicullitis precedes cancer diagnosis; on the other hand, some studies suggest no correlations.

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of bilateral lateral rectus recession with vertical tendon transposition (LRVT) and LRVT combined with inferior oblique (IO) disinsertion for V-pattern exotropia.

Methods: The medical records of patients who had mild-to-moderate (+1 and +2) inferior oblique overaction (IOOA) and underwent half-tendon-width upward LRVT (transposition group), and LRVT with IO disinsertion (combined surgery group) for V-pattern exotropia and who had at least 3 years of postoperative follow-up were reviewed retrospectively.

Results: A total of 45 patients were included: 22 in the transposition group and 23 in the combined surgery group.

Isocitrate Dehydrogenase Inhibitors in Glioma: From Bench to Bedside.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

May 2024

Department of Medical Oncology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN 55905, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • IDH-mutant gliomas are aggressive brain tumors primarily impacting adults under 55, and standard treatments often fail to prevent recurrence.
  • The IDH mutation drives cancer growth through the oncometabolite 2-hydroxyglutarate, making it a promising target for new therapies.
  • Recent trials of IDH inhibitors, like vorasidenib, show potential for treating low-grade gliomas, but further research is needed to optimize treatment strategies.

Changes in Cardiac Structure and Function of Recipients after Kidney Transplantation.

J Clin Med

June 2024

Department of Nephrology, Health Sciences University, Gazi Yasargil Research and Training Hospital, Diyarbakir 21070, Turkey.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) elevates the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality. Uremic cardiomyopathy, frequently observed in CKD and end-stage renal disease (ESRD), involves alterations in cardiac structure and function, which may reverse post-kidney transplantation, although data remain controversial. This study examines the relationship between graft function and changes in cardiac parameters pre- and post-transplantation in kidney transplant recipients.

: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is one of the most important complications after invasive cardiovascular procedures. Considering the pivotal role of inflammation in CIN development, the use of peripheral blood-based indexes may be an easily available biomarker to predict CIN risk. Therefore, in the present study, we evaluated the association between the pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) and the risk of CIN.

Patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) -positive, hormone receptor-positive (HR-positive) metastatic breast cancer (MBC) usually undergo trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) therapy in subsequent lines. Combining endocrine therapy (ET) with T-DM1 can improve treatment outcomes in this subtype. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the benefits of using T-DM1 with ET in HER2-positive and HR-positive MBC.
