Background: In this retrospective study the effects of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), mean platelet volume to platelet count ratio (MPV/PC) values as well as C‑reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) levels on the severity and mortality in critically ill child trauma cases were evaluated.

Methods: A total of 80 trauma cases aged 31 days to 16 years that were followed-up in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) were included in the study. The data of the patients on the first day of hospitalization (T1), the median day of intensive care admission (T2), and before discharge or exitus (T3) were analyzed.

Spinal epidural hematomas (SEHs)are space-occupying lesions that exert pressure on the spinal cord by rapidly accumulating blood between the dura and bone or ligament components. The annual incidence of spontaneous epidural hematoma is estimated to be one in one million. The predominant symptoms are back pain or neurological impairment, including sensory, motor, or autonomic dysfunction of the limbs below the hematoma level.

Objective: The use of oral anticoagulants in elderly patients is a predisposing factor in developing a subdural hematoma (SDH). The surgical option is often the standard approach but can be accompanied by complications. In this study, we hypothesized that dexamethasone administration after surgery would positively affect subdural change and subdural size in the second week.

The World Health Organization/International Society of Urological Pathology (2022 WHO/ISUP) classification categorizes noninvasive carcinomas based on the highest grade observed in a pathology sample. According to this classification, a lesion is classified as mixed-grade (MG) if the highest-grade component comprises less than 5% high-grade (HG) carcinoma [14]. This study included 160 cases of low-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma (LGUC) and 160 cases of HG papillary urothelial carcinoma (HGUC), selected randomly.

Background: Unstable femoral neck fractures with medial calcar defects are difficult to manage. The optimal fixation methods for these fractures have been a subject of ongoing debate among orthopedic surgeons. In this study, three different fixation techniques for vertical, medial defected femoral neck fractures were compared.

Introduction: Malnutrition is defined as a pathological condition arising from deficient or imbalanced intake of nutritional elements. Factors such as increasing metabolic demands during the disease course in the hospitalized patients and inadequate calorie intake increase the risk of malnutrition. The aim of the present study is to evaluate nutritional status of patients admitted to pediatric intensive care units (PICU) in Turkey, examine the effect of nutrition on the treatment process and draw attention to the need for regulating nutritional support of patients while continuing existing therapies.

Morphological changes after open lumbar microdiscectomy at 2-year follow-up.

J Back Musculoskelet Rehabil

January 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Göztepe Prof. Dr. Süleyman Yalçın City Hospital, Istanbul Medeniyet University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: It is known that a possible decrease in disc height (DH) and foraminal size after open lumbar microdiscectomy (OLM) may cause pain in the long term. However, there is still insufficient information about the short- or long-term pathoanatomical and morphological effects of microdiscectomy. For example, the exact temporal course of the change in DH is not well known.

Article Synopsis
  • Glove-induced skin issues among healthcare workers are commonly misidentified as latex allergies, leading to misunderstandings about their true nature.
  • A study involving 98 Turkish healthcare workers found that while many experienced symptoms, only a small percentage actually had latex allergies or contact hypersensitivity to glove materials.
  • The findings suggest that simply avoiding latex gloves isn't a practical solution; instead, better skin care practices like using moisturizers and reducing harsh soaps are recommended.

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare mesenchymal tumor of vascular endothelial origin. Non-soft tissue epithelioid hemangioendothelioma can also be seen in different organs. Although chemotherapy has been used in some patients, complete surgical removal of the tumor tissue has proven to be the most durable solution.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumor originating from the gastrointestinal tract and have a broad spectrum of clinicopathological features affecting disease management regarding the treatment modalities. A retrospective study of 49 patients who underwent surgery for gastrointestinal tumors between 2008 and 2016 was conducted. Clinical, pathological, and immunohistochemical features of patients with and without recurrence were statistically analyzed.

Introduction: We found only a few studies that had performed high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) analyses of inadequate ThinPrep™ Papanicolaou (Pap) tests. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze unsatisfactory ThinPrep Pap tests using hrHPV tests. The colposcopic biopsy results of cases with an unsatisfactory ThinPrep Pap test and positive hrHPV results were revealed.

Center for Nanotechnology and Biomaterials Applied and Research, Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey; Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Istanbul Arel University, Istanbul, Turkey. Electronic address:

The medicinal plant of Styrax liquidus (ST) (sweet gum balsam) which extracted from Liquidambar orientalis Mill tree, was loaded into the 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA)/chitosan (CS) based 3D printed scaffolds to investigate its wound healing and closure effect, in this study. The morphological and chemical properties of the ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds with different concentrations (1 %, 2 %, and 3 % wt) were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), respectively. In addition, the mechanical and thermal properties of the materials were investigated by Tensile test and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), respectively.

MRI reliability in pediatric abdominal lymph node metastases?

Acta Radiol

October 2023

Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Goztepe Prof. Dr. Suleyman Yalcin City Hospital, Istanbul Medeniyet University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: Although positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) is an effective imaging method used in the detection of lymph node metastases, repeated imaging increases X-ray exposure, especially in pediatric patients. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may detect abdominal lymph nodes and provide subtle anatomic detail, and functional information without radiation.

Purpose: To evaluate the reliability of MRI in detecting lymph node metastases in pediatric abdominal malignancies and to determine whether X-ray dose can be reduced by comparing its effectiveness with PET-CT.

The role of Extracellular Genomic Materials (EGMs) in psychiatric disorders.

Transl Psychiatry

July 2023

Department of Genetics, Aziz Sancar Institute of Experimental Medicine, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Extracellular Genomic Materials (EGMs) are the nucleic acids secreted or released from all types of cells by endogenous or exogenous stimuli through varying mechanisms into the extracellular region and inevitably to all biological fluids. EGMs could be found as free, protein-bound, and/ or with vesicles. EGMs can potentially have immunophenotypic and/or genotypic characteristics of a cell of origin, travel to distant organs, and interact with the new microenvironment.
