Aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, mercury, nickel, thallium, titanium, zinc, carbon tetrachloride, phthalates, glyphosate, alcohol, drugs, and herbs are under discussion having the potential to injure the human liver, but allocation of the injury to the hepatotoxicant as exact cause is difficult for physicians and requires basic clinical knowledge of toxicology details. Liver injury occurs at a variable extent depending on the dose, mostly reproducible in animal models that allow studies on molecular steps leading to the hepatocellular injury. These exogenous hepatotoxins may cause an overproduction of reactive oxidative species (ROS), which are generated during microsomal or mitochondrial oxidative stress from incomplete oxygen split and trigger the injury if protective antioxidant capacities are reduced.

Introduction: To investigate the safety and efficacy of the Vitesse hypersonic vitrectomy device for retinal reattachment surgery in proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) or proliferative diabetic vitreoretinopathy (PDVR) cases. The Vitesse device utilizes hypersonic technology to liquefy instead of cutting the vitreous, providing an alternative to the traditional pneumatic guillotine cutter.
Material And Methods: A prospective, one-armed, non-comparative, open-label study was performed.

Aim: To develop and validate models based on logistic regression and artificial intelligence for prognostic prediction of molar survival in periodontally affected patients.
Materials And Methods: Clinical and radiographic data from four different centres across four continents (two in Europe, one in the United States, and one in China) including 515 patients and 3157 molars were collected and used to train and test different types of machine-learning algorithms for their prognostic ability of molar loss over 10 years. The following models were trained: logistic regression, support vector machine, K-nearest neighbours, decision tree, random forest, artificial neural network, gradient boosting, and naive Bayes.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic challenges healthcare systems worldwide. Within inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) the vulnerable subgroup of intoxication-type IMDs such as organic acidurias (OA) and urea cycle disorders (UCD) show risk for infection-induced morbidity and mortality. This study (observation period February 2020 to December 2021) evaluates impact on medical health care as well as disease course and outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infections in patients with intoxication-type IMDs managed by participants of the European Registry and Network for intoxication type metabolic diseases Consortium (E-IMD).

Aim: Macroecological studies that require habitat suitability data for many species often derive this information from expert opinion. However, expert-based information is inherently subjective and thus prone to errors. The increasing availability of GPS tracking data offers opportunities to evaluate and supplement expert-based information with detailed empirical evidence.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease resulting in the destruction of tooth-supporting tissues. It affects billions of people around the globe and substantiates an enormous economic burden to society. Digital tools such as mobile Health (mHealth) applications have the potential to increase patient engagement, knowledge about the disease, and adherence to treatment recommendations.

Background: Communication with patients and their relatives as well as with colleagues and students is an essential part of every physician's daily work. An established method for teaching communication skills is using simulated patients (SPs). However, teaching with SPs is often subjectively perceived by medical students as less instructive than teaching with real patients (RPs).

COVID-19 adds to the complexity of optimal timing for tracheostomy. Over the course of this pandemic, and expanded knowledge of the disease, many centers have changed their operating procedures and performed an early tracheostomy. We studied the data on early and delayed tracheostomy regarding patient outcome such as mortality.

Background: Anastomotic leak (AL) after bilioenteric reconstruction (BR) is a feared complication after bile duct resection, especially in combination with liver resection. Literature on surgical outcome is sparse. This study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors for AL after combined liver and bile duct resection with a focus on operative or endoscopic reinterventions.

Mexico's role in the US-Central American migration regime is threefold: not only is it a country of origin, and a transit country, but also increasingly becoming a receiving country for migrants who flee from violence, insecurity and poverty. The Mexican state responds with detention enforcement. Clinical research usually puts emphasise on the negative impact of detention enforcement on the detainees' mental health.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the primary source of micropollutants in aquatic ecosystems. Many micropollutants tend to bind to sediments and persist until remobilizion by bioturbation or flood events. Advanced effluent treatment by ozonation has been proven to eliminate most micropollutants.

The gut microbiota encodes a broad range of enzymes capable of synthetizing various metabolites, some of which are still uncharacterized. One well-known class of microbiota-derived metabolites are the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as acetate, propionate, butyrate and valerate. SCFAs have long been considered a mere waste product of bacterial metabolism.

Background: During the recent pandemic with the severe acute respiratory syndrome-corona virus‑2 the first messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines were approved. To facilitate mass vaccination, confidence of the general population in these new vaccines is mandatory, which is in turn strongly dependent on the availability of reliable data on complications.
Objective: Summary of the current knowledge on mRNA vaccination-associated myocarditis as a potentially fatal side effect.

Aim: Comparison of grading according to radiographic bone loss (BL) or according to interdental clinical attachment loss (CAL).
Materials And Methods: In 100 periodontitis patients at the Department of Periodontology of Goethe-University Frankfurt, Germany, periodontitis grade was assigned by (i) indirect evidence using BL at the most affected tooth divided by root length and (ii) CAL at the most affected tooth divided by root length of the respective tooth type according to root length in German and Swedish cohorts. The resulting quotients were divided by age.

Structural Biology has moved beyond the aim of simply identifying the components of a cellular subsystem towards analysing the dynamics and interactions of multiple players within a cell. This focal shift comes with additional requirements for the analytical tools used to investigate these systems of increased size and complexity, such as Native Mass Spectrometry, which has always been an important tool for structural biology. Scientific advance and recent developments, such as new ways to mimic a cell membrane for a membrane protein, have caused established methods to struggle to keep up with the increased demands.

Comparative values are essential for the classification of orthopedic abnormalities and the assessment of a necessary therapy. At present, reference values for the upper body posture for healthy, male adults exist for the age groups of 18-35, 31-40 and 41-50 years. However, corresponding data on the decade of 51 to 60 year-old healthy men are still lacking.
