Background: The development of a medical device requires strict adherence to regulatory processes. Prehabilitation in this context is a new area in surgery that trains, coaches, and advises patients in mental well-being, nutrition, and physical activity. As staff is permanently drained from clinical care, remote and digital solutions with real-time assessments of data, including patient-related outcome reporting, may simplify preparation before major surgeries.

Rationale: In China, herbal traditional Chinese medicine products are readily obtained without any requirement of prescription and widely used in real life, thereby increasing the incidence of their related herb-induced liver injury (HILI). However, the diagnosis of HILI is still challenging because its clinical manifestations are variable due to lack of any specific biomarkers. Misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment may result in the progression of HILI.

Synthetic organic chemicals, including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and industrial compounds, pose a growing threat to marine ecosystems. Despite their potential impact, data on the co-occurrence of these contaminants in multiple compartments, including surface water, bottom water, porewater, and sediment in the marine environment remains limited. Such information is critical for assessing coastal chemical status, establishing environmental quality benchmarks, and conducting comprehensive environmental risk assessments.

Identification of subcomplexes and protein-protein interactions in the DNA transporter of Thermus thermophilus HB27.

Biochim Biophys Acta Biomembr

October 2024

Molecular Microbiology & Bioenergetics, Institute of Molecular Biosciences, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt/Main, Max-von-Laue-Str. 9, 60438 Frankfurt, Germany. Electronic address:

The natural transformation system of the thermophilic bacterium Thermus thermophilus comprises at least 16 competence proteins. Recently we found that the outer membrane (OM) competence protein PilW interacts with the secretin channel, which guides type IV pili (T4P) and potential DNA transporter pseudopili through the OM. Here we have used biochemical techniques to study the interactions of cytoplasmic, inner membrane (IM) and OM components of the DNA transporter in T.

Background: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a fatal cancer of the bile duct with a poor prognosis owing to limited therapeutic options. The incidence of intrahepatic CCA (iCCA) is increasing worldwide, and its molecular basis is emerging. Environmental factors may contribute to regional differences in the mutation spectrum of European patients with iCCA, which are underrepresented in systematic genomic and transcriptomic studies of the disease.

Agility, defined as the ability to rapidly respond to unforeseen events, constitutes a central performance component in football. Existing agility training approaches often focus on change of direction that does not reflect the complex motor-cognitive demands on the pitch. The objective of this study is to examine the effects of a novel motor-cognitive dual-task agility training (Multiple-object tracking integrated into agility training) on agility and football-specific test performance parameters, compared to agility and a change of direction (COD) training.

The human leucocyte antigen (HLA) allele variability was studied in cohorts of patients with idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (iDILI). Some reports showed an association between HLA genetics and iDILI, proposing HLA alleles as a potential risk factor for the liver injury. However, the strength of such assumptions heavily depends on the quality of the iDILI diagnosis, calling for a thorough analysis.

Hemochromatosis: Ferroptosis, ROS, Gut Microbiome, and Clinical Challenges with Alcohol as Confounding Variable.

Int J Mol Sci

February 2024

Department of Internal Medicine II, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Klinikum Hanau, D-63450 Hanau, Germany.

Hemochromatosis represents clinically one of the most important genetic storage diseases of the liver caused by iron overload, which is to be differentiated from hepatic iron overload due to excessive iron release from erythrocytes in patients with genetic hemolytic disorders. This disorder is under recent mechanistic discussion regarding ferroptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS), the gut microbiome, and alcohol abuse as a risk factor, which are all topics of this review article. Triggered by released intracellular free iron from ferritin via the autophagic process of ferritinophagy, ferroptosis is involved in hemochromatosis as a specific form of iron-dependent regulated cell death.

A multi-scenario risk assessment strategy applied to mixtures of chemicals of emerging concern in the River Aconcagua basin in Central Chile.

Sci Total Environ

April 2024

Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden; Institute for Environmental Research, RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany.

Environmental risk assessments strategies that account for the complexity of exposures are needed in order to evaluate the toxic pressure of emerging chemicals, which also provide suggestions for risk mitigation and management, if necessary. Currently, most studies on the co-occurrence and environmental impacts of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) are conducted in countries of the Global North, leaving massive knowledge gaps in countries of the Global South. In this study, we implement a multi-scenario risk assessment strategy to improve the assessment of both the exposure and hazard components in the chemical risk assessment process.

Aldehyde:ferredoxin oxidoreductases (AORs) have been isolated and biochemically-characterized from a handful of anaerobic or facultative aerobic archaea and bacteria. They catalyze the ferredoxin (Fd)-dependent oxidation of aldehydes to acids. Recently, the involvement of AOR in the reduction of organic acids to alcohols with electrons derived from sugar or synthesis gas was demonstrated, with alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) carrying out the reduction of the aldehyde to the alcohol (AOR-ADH pathway).
