Electronic address:
Exfoliation syndrome (XFS), or pseudoexfoliation syndrome, is considered a systemic disorder that leads to glaucoma with progressive visual field loss. A better insight into the underlying pathogenic mechanism will help diagnose the disease and prevent and slow progression. Here, we provide an overview of disease pathogenesis in the light of GWAS and multi-omics research.

Background: Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness. There are no prospective studies on the risk of developing blindness in both eyes in individuals with definite OAG.
Methods: A total of 354 patients with newly diagnosed OAG, who had participated in four studies conducted at the Eye Department in Tierp, Sweden, from 1979 to 2006, were included in the investigation.

Purpose: To investigate clinical characteristics of postoperative supraciliary effusion (SCE) development following gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) in patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG).
Methods: In this prospective and observational study, 64 eyes (64 patients) with PEXG were examined with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) after GATT over a 12-month follow-up. Outcomes were surgical success, intraocular pressure (IOP), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), number of antiglaucoma medications (AGM) and complications of the SCE (+) group with those of SCE (-) group.

Purpose: To describe the incidence, complications and management of reverse pupillary block (RPB) after implantation of Carlevale intraocular lens (IOL).
Design: Multicenter, retrospective, cross-sectional study.
Participants: Of a sample of 128 patients that had undergone Carlevale IOL implantation, 19 patients were found to present RPB.
Purpose: To assess the risk for pseudophakic cystoid macular oedema (PCME) and posterior capsular opacification (PCO) associated with combined cataract surgery and trabeculectomy compared to cataract surgery alone.
Methods: Data analysis of subjects who underwent routine cataract surgery without and with concomitant trabeculectomy at the Department of Ophthalmology, Bristol Eye Hospital, the UK, between January 2008 and December 2017. Odds ratios (ORs) for PCME between the types of surgeries were calculated using univariate and multivariate regression analysis.

Purpose: To evaluate the lamina cribrosa, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and macula in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG) and healthy individuals using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
Methods: A total of 158 eyes were included in the study, comprising 58 eyes of 29 patients with POAG, 50 eyes of 25 patients with PEXG, and 50 eyes of 25 healthy individuals. The lamina cribrosa thickness (LCT) (at three locations), lamina cribrosa depth (LCD), RNFL thickness, and the macular thickness were measured using the EDI mode of the SD-OCT.

Background: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES) is an age-related systemic condition that predominantly affects ocular structures and is characterized by the deposition of material on the lens, ciliary body, zonules, corneal endothelium, iris, and pupillary margin. We compared the corneal endothelial morphology, anterior segment parameters, corneal densitometry, and corneal topographic characteristics between the clinically affected and apparently normal fellow eyes of patients with clinically unilateral PES.
Methods: This was a comparative, cross-sectional study of 34 patients with clinically unilateral PES.

Background: The effects of trabeculectomy on anterior segment parameters have been widely investigated. However, the stabilization time for various glaucoma types after trabeculectomy remains debatable. We investigated the effect of mitomycin C-augmented trabeculectomy on ocular anterior segment parameters in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) during short-term follow-up using the Pentacam HR.
