Study models are frequently used in orthodontics and are a key part of both initial assessment and treatment planning. They are an important part of comprehensive orthodontic records; furthermore, study models are an essential diagnostic aid that can be studied in detail without the patient being present. We present a case of a 14-year-old boy with an abnormal palatal swelling detected by his specialist orthodontist after review of study models taken at the initial appointment.

Mechanical biofilm disruption causes microbial and immunological shifts in periodontitis patients.

Sci Rep

May 2021

Oral Sciences, Glasgow Dental Hospital and School, School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, G12 8TA, UK.

Periodontitis is characterized by subgingival biofilm dysbiosis, inflammation and tissue destruction. Current treatment involves mechanical biofilm disruption known as non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). This study sought to characterise the impact of treatment on microbial diversity and overall community, and the parallel impact on host inflammation in the oral cavity.

Article Synopsis
  • The introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) has significantly decreased the cases of pneumococcal meningitis, especially in countries that have used PCV10/13 for several years.
  • A project called PSERENADE analyzed the types of pneumococcal strains still causing meningitis and found that certain serotypes, such as 19A and 6C, are still prevalent, particularly in older age groups.
  • Current research on higher-valency PCVs could potentially address the remaining cases of pneumococcal meningitis, but further investigation is needed to understand their effectiveness in regions like the African meningitis belt.

The symptoms of TMJ Osteoarthrosis/Osteoarthritis(TMJ OA) are characteristic and in most cases specific to the disorder. There is, however, an overlap of symptoms with other TMDs.Treatment of TMJ OA is generally directed towards management of the symptoms as the temporomandibular joint does retain the capacity throughout life to repair and remodel.

Background: The ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222) vaccine has been approved for emergency use by the UK regulatory authority, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, with a regimen of two standard doses given with an interval of 4-12 weeks. The planned roll-out in the UK will involve vaccinating people in high-risk categories with their first dose immediately, and delivering the second dose 12 weeks later. Here, we provide both a further prespecified pooled analysis of trials of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and exploratory analyses of the impact on immunogenicity and efficacy of extending the interval between priming and booster doses.

Introduction: The ST-4821 complex (cc4821) is a leading cause of serogroup C and serogroup B invasive meningococcal disease in China where diverse strains in two phylogenetic groups (groups 1 and 2) have acquired fluoroquinolone resistance. cc4821 was recently prevalent among carriage isolates in men who have sex with men in New York City (USA). Genome-level population studies have thus far been limited to Chinese isolates.

Traumatised permanent anterior teeth can require endodontic treatment which may be immediate as part of acute trauma management, or delayed due to the development of sequelae. This paper will enable clinical decision making by exploring a range of situations in which endodontic treatment may be indicated, and also offer practical advice regarding effective endodontic treatment for paediatric dental trauma patients.Endodontic treatment of traumatised permanent teeth in paediatric patients is often challenging.

The advent of omics technologies has greatly improved our understanding of microbial biology, particularly in the last two decades. The field of microbial biofilms is, however, relatively new, consolidated in the 1980s. The morphogenic switching by microbes from planktonic to biofilm phenotype confers numerous survival advantages such as resistance to desiccation, antibiotics, biocides, ultraviolet radiation, and host immune responses, thereby complicating treatment strategies for pathogenic microorganisms.
