  • Nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine (GnP-NAT) was tested as a neoadjuvant therapy in a phase II trial involving 61 patients with borderline resectable pancreatic cancer, focusing on overall survival and disease progression.
  • The results showed a median overall survival of 25.2 months and a significant resection rate, although 73.8% of patients experienced serious side effects (grade 3/4 events).
  • The study suggests GnP-NAT is a promising treatment, but highlights caution for patients with previous pulmonary issues and emphasizes the need for further research into its safety and effectiveness.

The endothelial glycocalyx covers the lumen of blood vessels throughout the body and plays an important role in endothelial homeostasis. Advances in electron microscopy techniques have provided clues to better understand the structure and composition of identical vascular endothelial glycocalyx. The morphology and thickness of the endothelial glycocalyx differ from organ to organ.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence and effects of polypharmacy (using six or more medications daily) and sarcopenia (muscle weakness and loss) in 239 patients with liver cirrhosis, noting that these issues are rising public health concerns.
  • Results reveal that 53% of patients had polypharmacy and 29% had sarcopenia, with both conditions more common in older individuals and correlating with advanced liver disease.
  • The findings indicate that both polypharmacy and sarcopenia independently predict higher mortality risk, especially in older patients, highlighting the need for more extensive research to confirm these associations.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) has been reported as a rare complication of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI); however, ICI-related HLH is a life-threatening and comparatively late adverse event. Early diagnosis is critical, and it should be included in the differential diagnosis especially in patients with cytopenia with fever and hyperferritinaemia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if subgroups within the International Society of Urological Pathology Grade Group 4 (GG 4) of prostate cancer patients exhibit different oncological outcomes after robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) in Japan.
  • A total of 3195 patients were analyzed, with 298 having GG 4 tumors; results showed varied 3-year biochemical recurrence-free survival rates among the subgroups, with the GS 3+5 group having the best outcomes.
  • The findings suggest that patients with pathological Gleason scores (GSs) of 4+4 and 5+3 face higher risks of recurrence compared to those with GS 3+5, indicating that the latter may be overestimated in severity among

Aim: In acute medicine, we occasionally treat life-threatening conditions such as sepsis and trauma, which cause severe thrombocytopenia. Serum thrombopoietin levels have been reported to increase under the condition of thrombocytopenia related to severity. Collagen is a crucial activator of platelets, and Rho family members, such as Rho/Rho-kinase and Rac, play roles as active molecules involved in the intracellular signaling pathways in platelet activation.

Purpose: In 2017, the first guidelines for fertility preservation in cancer patients were published in Japan. However, the impact of the guidelines remains unknown. Therefore, the authors conducted a nationwide survey on cryopreservation procedures in the period from shortly before to after publication of the guidelines (2016-2019) and compared the results with our previous survey (2011-2015).

Neuromuscular manifestations of new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection are frequent, and include dizziness, headache, myopathy, and olfactory and gustatory disturbances. Patients with acute central nervous system disorders, such as delirium, impaired consciousness, stroke and convulsive seizures, have a high mortality rate. The encephalitis/encephalopathy that causes consciousness disturbance and seizures can be classified into three conditions, including direct infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, encephalopathy caused by central nervous system damage secondary to systemic hypercytokinemia (cytokine storm) and autoimmune-mediated encephalitis that occurs after infection.

The relationship between Twitter ambassadors and retweets has not been fully evaluated for "tweet the meeting" activity. We collected data on the number of tweets and retweets during the Japanese Circulation Society's (JCS) annual meetings in 2019, 2020, and 2021. After adjustment, JCS Twitter Ambassadors, selected by the JCS to increase the meeting's visibility, increased the total number of retweets by 9%.

One of the challenges that restricts the evolving extracellular vesicle (EV) research field is the lack of a consensus method for EV separation. This may also explain the diversity of the experimental results, as co-separated soluble proteins and lipoproteins may impede the interpretation of experimental findings. In this study, we comprehensively evaluated the EV yields and sample purities of three most popular EV separation methods, ultracentrifugation, precipitation and size exclusion chromatography combined with ultrafiltration, along with a microfluidic tangential flow filtration device, Exodisc, in three commonly used biological samples, cell culture medium, human urine and plasma.
