Recent genome-wide association studies (GWASs) identified various genes and loci that confer susceptibility to coronary artery disease or myocardial infarction among Caucasian populations. As myocardial ischemia is an important risk factor for atrial fibrillation, we hypothesized that certain polymorphisms may contribute to the genetic susceptibility to atrial fibrillation through affecting the susceptibility to coronary artery disease. The aim of the present study was to examine the possible association of atrial fibrillation in Japanese individuals with 29 polymorphisms identified as susceptibility loci for coronary artery disease or myocardial infarction in the meta-analyses of GWASs in Caucasian populations.

Clinical features of acute obstructive suppurative pancreatic ductitis: A retrospective review of 20 cases.

Background And Aims: The clinical features of acute obstructive suppurative pancreatic ductitis (AOSPD) have not been elucidated. We aimed to clarify the clinical features of AOSPD.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical features of 20 patients with AOSPD at two tertiary referral centers between 1993 and 2012.

A 71-year-old woman was referred to our department due to an abnormal chest shadow. Imaging revealed a pulmonary nodule shadow in the left S6 segment, multiple small nodule shadows in the left pleura, and left pleural effusion. Transbronchial biopsy using endobronchial ultrasonography (EBUS) with a guide sheath was conducted.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography-related adverse events in patients with type 1 autoimmune pancreatitis.

Background: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is frequently performed for the diagnosis and treatment of type 1 autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). However, the prevalence of ERCP-related adverse events in patients with type 1 AIP has not been evaluated. We aimed to clarify the feasibility of ERCP in patients with type 1 AIP.

An Autopsied Case of Malignant Sarcomatoid Pleural Mesothelioma in Which Chest Pain Developed Several Months Earlier without Abnormality on Imaging.

The patient experienced chest pain for about 7 months, but a diagnosis could not be made until after death. He was diagnosed with malignant sarcomatoid pleural mesothelioma on autopsy. In this case report, difficult aspects of the diagnosis are discussed.

Evaluation of the field-in-field technique with lung blocks for breast tangential radiotherapy.

Several studies have reported the advantages of the field-in-field (FIF) technique in breast radiotherapy, including dose reduction in the lungs by using lung field blocks. We evaluated the FIF technique with lung blocks for breast tangential radiotherapy. Sixteen patients underwent free breathing (FB) computed tomography (CT), followed by two CT procedures performed during breath hold after light inhalation (IN) and light exhalation (EX).

A Case of Duodenal Neuroendocrine Carcinoma Treated with Amrubicin as Second-line Chemotherapy.

We present the case of a Japanese man in his 60s with duodenal neuroendocrine carcinoma with distant metastases. Chemotherapy with irinotecan plus cisplatin was initiated as a first-line regimen. However, disease progression was observed after only two cycles.

The aim of the present study was to examine the possible association of MetS in individuals with 29 polymorphisms that were previously identified as susceptibility loci for coronary artery disease or myocardial infarction by meta-analyses of GWASs. The study population comprised 1,822 subjects with MetS and 1,096 controls.

Long-term outcomes of endoscopic gallbladder stenting in high-risk surgical patients with calculous cholecystitis (with videos).

Background And Aims: Recently, endoscopic gallbladder stenting (EGBS) has been performed to prevent recurrences in high-risk surgical patients with cholecystitis. However, evidence regarding the long-term outcomes of EGBS is sparse. We investigated the cholecystitis recurrence rate in high-risk surgical patients with acute calculous cholecystitis and compared the cholecystitis recurrence rates in patients in whom EGBS was performed with those in patients who were observed after percutaneous drainage.

Subset Analysis of a Multicenter, Randomized Controlled Trial to Compare Magnifying Chromoendoscopy with Endoscopic Ultrasonography for Stage Diagnosis of Early Stage Colorectal Cancer.

Background: Our recent prospective study found equivalent accuracy of magnifying chromoendoscopy (MC) and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for diagnosing the invasion depth of colorectal cancer (CRC); however, whether these tools show diagnostic differences in categories such as tumor size and morphology remains unclear. Hence, we conducted detailed subset analysis of the prospective data.

Methods: In this multicenter, prospective, comparative trial, a total of 70 patients with early, flat CRC were enrolled from February 2011 to December 2012, and the results of 66 lesions were finally analyzed.

Association of genetic variants with dyslipidemia.

Although genetic variants, which regulate lipid metabolism, have been extensively investigated in Caucasian populations, the genes, which confer susceptibility to dyslipidemia in Japanese individuals, remain to be elucidated. The aim of the present study was to examine a possible association among hypertriglyceridemia, hypo‑high density lipoprotein (HDL)‑cholesterolemia or hyper‑low density lipoprotein (LDL)‑cholesterolemia in Japanese individuals with 29 polymorphisms observed to confer susceptibility for coronary heart disease. This was performed through meta‑analyses of genome‑wide association studies in Caucasian populations.

Localized IgG4-related Cholecystitis Mimicking Gallbladder Cancer.

We encountered a case of localized IgG4-cholecystitis mimicking gallbladder cancer with focal/segmental type1 autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). In this case, we were unable to exclude a diagnosis of gallbladder cancer and thus performed radical cholecystectomy. Type1 AIP is often associated with gallbladder lesions, accompanied by generally diffuse, circumferential thickening of the gallbladder wall.

Magnetic resonance imaging for diagnosis and management of unruptured interstitial pregnancy.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis and management of suspicious unruptured interstitial pregnancy.

Material And Methods: Only patients with unruptured interstitial pregnancy evaluated by MRI and observed for at least a year after surgery were included. Initial evaluation was performed by measurement of serum β-human chorionic gonadotrophin level and ultrasonography.

The aim of the present study was to examine the possible association of ischemic stroke with 29 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously identified by the meta-analyses of GWASs as susceptibility loci for coronary artery disease.

Risk factors for 30-day mortality in patients with pneumonia who receive appropriate initial antibiotics: an observational cohort study.

Background: Appropriate initial antibiotics are essential for the treatment of infectious diseases. However, some patients with pneumonia might develop adverse outcomes, despite receiving appropriate initial antibiotics. We aimed to clarify the risk factors for 30-day mortality in patients who received appropriate initial antibiotics and to identify potential candidates who would benefit from adjunctive therapy.

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas associated with familial adenomatous polyposis.

A man in his thirties visited our hospital for an evaluation of a 12×10-mm pancreatic solid tumor that was accidentally detected on computed tomography performed for follow-up of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). We diagnosed the patient with a solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) based on endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration, and he underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy. Small SPN tumors appear as solid tumors, without typical features of SPN, making the definitive diagnosis more difficult.

A case of floating thrombus in the ascending aorta that caused recurrent peripheral arterial embolic events.

We report the case of a 62-year-old man with recurrent arterial embolisms to his arms caused by a thrombosis of the ascending aorta. He had developed a left brachial artery embolism 8 years previously, but presented with a right brachial artery embolus on this occasion. A clot-like mass was seen in the ascending aorta on computed tomography without significant atherosclerosis.

Assessment of Factors Affecting the Usefulness and Diagnostic Yield of Core Biopsy Needles with a Side Hole in Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration.

Background/aims: A barbed puncture needle with a side hole was recently developed to improve sample quality and quantity in endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). In this study, we retrospectively assessed the usefulness of this puncture needle.

Methods: Factors affecting diagnostic yield, safety, and diagnostic accuracy were investigated in 76 patients who consecutively underwent EUS-FNA for neoplastic lesions at our hospital between January and December 2013.

Surgical treatment for fibrous dysplasia of femoral neck with mild but prolonged symptoms: a case series.

Background: The proximal femur is one of the most common sites involved by fibrous dysplasia. In cases with mild deformity that does not require corrective surgery, occasional patients suffer sustained pain because of repeated microfractures. This study aimed to clarify the outcomes of surgery with autogenous fibular cortical strut grafting and compression hip screw fixation.

Anti-M Antibody Induced Prolonged Anemia Following Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn Due to Erythropoietic Suppression in 2 Siblings.

Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) arising from MNSs incompatibility is rare, with few reports of prolonged anemia and reticulocytopenia following HDN. We report the younger of 2 male siblings, both of whom had anti-M-induced HDN and anemia persisting for over a month. Peripheral reticulocytes remained inappropriately low for the degree of anemia, and they needed multiple red cell transfusions.

Three Adult Cases of HPV-B19 Infection with Concomitant Leukopenia and Low Platelet Counts.

We encountered three adult patients with flu-like symptoms diagnosed with human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) infection. Blood serum analysis also revealed leukopenia, with white blood cell counts (WBCs) of 1,000-2,000/mL and low platelet counts of 89-150 × 10(9)/L. Typical skin rash was absent in one patient.

The aim of the present study was to examine an association of MI in Japanese individuals with 29 polymorphisms identified as susceptibility loci for MI or coronary artery disease in Caucasian populations by meta-analyses of GWAS. The study subjects comprised 1,824 subjects with MI and 2,329 controls.

Multicenter, prospective trial of white-light imaging alone versus white-light imaging followed by magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging for the real-time imaging and diagnosis of invasion depth in superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Background: Magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) has been used to estimate the invasion depth of superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SESCC), but the real diagnostic power of ME-NBI remains unclear because of few prospective studies.

Objectives: To evaluate whether ME-NBI adds additional information to white-light imaging (WLI) for the diagnosis of invasion depth of SESCC.

Design: Multicenter, prospective trial using real-time imaging and diagnosis.
