Reactive shepherding along a dynamic path.

Sci Rep

June 2024

IDLab, Department of Information Technology, Ghent University - imec, B-9052, Gent, Belgium.

Shepherding, the task of guiding a herd of autonomous individuals in a desired direction, is an essential skill employed in the herding of animals, crowd control, and evacuation operations. Integrating shepherding capabilities into robots holds promise to perform such tasks with increased efficiency and reduced labor costs. To date, robotic shepherds have only been designed to steer a herd towards a predetermined goal location without constraints on the trajectory.

Background: Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) is the gold standard for noninvasive arterial stiffness assessment, an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease, and a potential parameter to guide therapy. However, cfPWV is not routinely measured in clinical practice due to the unavailability of a low-cost, operator-friendly, and independent device. The current study validated a novel laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV)-based measurement of cfPWV against the reference technique.

Titanium:sapphire (Ti:sapphire) lasers have been essential for advancing fundamental research and technological applications, including the development of the optical frequency comb, two-photon microscopy and experimental quantum optics. Ti:sapphire lasers are unmatched in bandwidth and tuning range, yet their use is restricted because of their large size, cost and need for high optical pump powers. Here we demonstrate a monocrystalline titanium:sapphire-on-insulator (Ti:SaOI) photonics platform that enables dramatic miniaturization, cost reduction and scalability of Ti:sapphire technology.

A recurrent Gaussian quantum network for online processing of quantum time series.

Sci Rep

May 2024

Photonics Research Group, Ghent University - imec, Technologiepark-Zwijnaarde 126, 9052, Gent, Belgium.

Over the last decade, researchers have studied the interplay between quantum computing and classical machine learning algorithms. However, measurements often disturb or destroy quantum states, requiring multiple repetitions of data processing to estimate observable values. In particular, this prevents online (real-time, single-shot) processing of temporal data as measurements are commonly performed during intermediate stages.

While autonomous artificial agents are assumed to perfectly execute the strategies they are programmed with, humans who design them may make mistakes. These mistakes may lead to a misalignment between the humans' intended goals and their agents' observed behavior, a problem of value alignment. Such an alignment problem may have particularly strong consequences when these autonomous systems are used in social contexts that involve some form of collective risk.

Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health problem that requires early and effective treatments to prevent the indiscriminate use of antimicrobial drugs and the outcome of infections. Mass Spectrometry (MS), and more particularly MALDI-TOF, have been widely adopted by routine clinical microbiology laboratories to identify bacterial species and detect AMR. The analysis of AMR with deep learning is still recent, and most models depend on filters and preprocessing techniques manually applied on spectra.

Decoding Excimer Formation in Covalent-Organic Frameworks Induced by Morphology and Ring Torsion.

Adv Mater

June 2024

Centre for Ordered Materials, Organometallics and Catalysis (COMOC), Department of Chemistry, Ghent University, Krijgslaan 281-S3, Ghent, 9000, Belgium.

A thorough and quantitative understanding of the fate of excitons in covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) after photoexcitation is essential for their augmented optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications via precise structure tuning. The synthesis of a library of COFs having identical chemical backbone with impeded conjugation, but varied morphology and surface topography to study the effect of these physical properties on the photophysics of the materials is herein reported. The variation of crystallite size and surface topography substantified different aggregation pattern in the COFs, which leads to disparities in their photoexcitation and relaxation properties.

Polyamide 11 (PA11) and copolyester (TPC-E) were compounded through melt extrusion with low levels (below 10%) of expanded graphite (EG), aiming at the manufacturing of a thermally and electrically conductive composite resistant to friction and with acceptable mechanical properties. Thermal characterisation showed that the EG presence had no influence on the onset degradation temperature or melting temperature. While the specific density of the produced composite materials increased linearly with increasing levels of EG, the tensile modulus and flexural modulus showed a significant increase already at the introduction of 1 wt% EG.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) patients exhibit unexplained symptoms, and prior studies suggest these may relate to a disrupted autonomic nervous system and less complex physical activity patterns compared to healthy individuals.
  • This study uses an advanced method to examine how the complexity of physical activity in seven CFS patients changes over three weeks, alongside assessments of their weekly functioning.
  • Results show significant fluctuations in activity complexity over time but failed to establish a consistent relationship between complexity and patient functioning, questioning the effectiveness of using a single complexity measurement to evaluate long-term activity in CFS patients.

This paper considers neural representation through the lens of active inference, a normative framework for understanding brain function. It delves into how living organisms employ generative models to minimize the discrepancy between predictions and observations (as scored with variational free energy). The ensuing analysis suggests that the brain learns generative models to navigate the world adaptively, not (or not solely) to understand it.

February 2024

Department of Telecommunications and Information Processing (TELIN) - PI Research Group, Ghent University-imec, 9000 Ghent, Belgium.

An adequate supply of oxygen-rich blood is vital to maintain cell homeostasis, cellular metabolism, and overall tissue health. While classical methods of measuring tissue ischemia are often invasive, localized and require skin contact or contrast agents, spectral imaging shows promise as a non-invasive, wide field, and contrast-free approach. We evaluate three novel reflectance-based spectral indices from the 460 - 840 spectral range.
