Background: Lymphatic disorders such as protein-losing enteropathy, plastic bronchitis, and chylothorax are important complications of the Fontan circulation and ultimately result in an increased risk of early death. Several European centers are now performing lymphatic procedures. The aim of this study is to map the extent of these lymphatic disorders and treatments provided across European pediatric cardiology centers.

Background: Over the last 20 years, pediatric hypertension (pHTN) prevalence in Western society has risen from 3.5 to 9% due to childhood overweight, obesity, and secondary kidney and cardiological conditions. Successful management of fetal hypoxia due to amniotic banding at 26 weeks of pregnancy: A case report of a rare survival.

Background: Amniotic banding is a rare condition that can lead to structural limb anomalies, fetal distress and adverse obstetric outcomes. The main hypothesis for its etiology is a rupture of the amniotic membrane in early pregnancy, with the formation of tightly entangling strands around the fetus. These strands can constrict, incise, and subsequently amputate limb parts, the neck or head.

Reduced subgenual cingulate-dorsolateral prefrontal connectivity as an electrophysiological marker for depression.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a widespread mental illness that causes considerable suffering, and neuroimaging studies are trying to reduce this burden by developing biomarkers that can facilitate detection. Prior fMRI- and neurostimulation studies suggest that aberrant subgenual Anterior Cingulate (sgACC)-dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC) functional connectivity is consistently present within MDD. Combining the need for reliable depression markers with the electroencephalogram's (EEG) high clinical utility, we investigated whether aberrant EEG sgACC-DLPFC functional connectivity could serve as a marker for depression.

Paediatric and adult congenital cardiology education and training in Europe.

Background: Limited data exist on training of European paediatric and adult congenital cardiologists.

Methods: A structured and approved questionnaire was circulated to national delegates of Association for European Paediatric and Congenital Cardiology in 33 European countries.

Results: Delegates from 30 countries (91%) responded.

Hearing aid use and gender differences in the auditory-cognitive cascade in the oldest old.

Objectives: This study analyzed cognitive differences between hearing-aid (HA) and non-HA users. We hypothesized that HA-use attenuates the auditory-cognitive cascade, thereby, the latter is more conspicuous in non-HA users. Since hearing impairment (HI) shows male predominance, we hypothesized gender differences within the auditory-cognitive relationship.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequently occurring syndrome in critically ill patients and is associated with worse outcomes. Biomarkers allow early identification and therapy of AKI which may improve outcomes. Urine chitinase 3-like protein 1 (uCHI3L1) was recently identified as a promising urinary biomarker for AKI.

A new dynamic model for in vitro evaluation of intravascular devices.

Introduction:: A dynamic model to evaluate thrombus formation on intravascular catheters in vitro is presented. The model enables fluid infusion, variation in the catheter orientation, and variable flow conditions. It was applied on a catheter used to shunt cerebrospinal fluid to a vein, a dural venous sinus, for the treatment of hydrocephalus.

Increasing use of cognitive measures in the operational definition of frailty-A systematic review.

Ageing is associated both with frailty and cognitive decline. The quest for a unifying approach has led to a new concept: cognitive frailty. This systematic review explores the contribution of cognitive assessment in frailty operationalization.

Linking Frailty Instruments to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health: A Systematic Review.

To date, the major dilemma concerning frailty is the lack of a standardized language regarding its operationalization. Considering the demographic challenge that the world is facing, standardization of frailty identification is indeed the first step in tackling the burdensome consequences of frailty. To demonstrate this diversity in frailty assessment, the available frailty instruments have been linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF): a standardized and hierarchically coded language developed by World Health Organization regarding health conditions and their positive (functioning) and negative (disability) consequences.

Plantar Vein Thrombosis: An Unusual Cause of Plantar Pain.

We present a case of an 80-year-old man with progressive pain for 5 days at the medial and plantar aspect of the left heel. Wearing shoes aggravated the pain. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed thrombosis of the medial plantar veins.

Maintenance therapy for ulcerative colitis has no impact on changes in the extent of ulcerative colitis.

Background And Aim: Although the efficacy of maintenance remission therapy in ulcerative colitis (UC) has been proved in many studies, little is known about its possible effect on the extent of the disease. The aim of the present multicenter Belgian study was to evaluate the potential role of UC maintenance therapy on the colonic extension of the disease.

Materials And Methods: A total of 98 patients, 56 males, 42 females, mean age 52 years, range 22-82 years, from 12 medical centers in Belgium, with an acute exacerbation of well-established, endoscopically and histologically proven left-sided UC, were included.
