Post recurrence survival in early versus late period and its prognostic factors in rectal cancer patients.

To identify factors associated with post-recurrence survival (PRS), we examined our institutional recurrence patterns following definitive resection for rectal cancer. We reviewed all patients with rectal cancer diagnosed at three hospitals in the east of Iran from 2011 to 2020. The optimal cut-off value was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to determine early recurrence.

The clinical prognostic significance of miR-140-5p expression in patients with cancer: A Meta and Bioinformatic analysis.

The prognostic value of microRNA-140-5p (miR-140-5p) expression in cancer patients has been investigated, but with inconsistent results. This meta-analysis aims to determine the prognostic significance of miR-140-5p expression in patients with various malignancies. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, ProQuest, Cochrane, and Google Scholar to identify relevant studies published before June 2023.

Gubernaculum-sparing orchiopexy versus gubernaculum excision; A randomized trial on success and atrophy rates.

Introduction And Objective: Previous studies showed that extra blood supply can decrease testicular atrophy following laparoscopic orchiopexy. We evaluated the impact of preserving the gubernacular attachment (which contains blood supply from cremasteric artery and its anastomoses) on atrophy rates following open conventional orchiopexy.

Study Design: This double-blinded randomized trial was implemented from March 2022 to September 2023.

Effect of trehalose on mortality and disease severity in ICU-admitted patients: Protocol for a triple-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Background: Improvement in organ failure in intensive care unit (ICU) patients is accompanied by lower mortality rate. A disaccharide, trehalose is a candidate to improve organ failure and survival by autophagy induction and enhancing oxidative stress defense. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of trehalose in improving clinical outcome and reducing mortality in ICU patients.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, and is due to the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. It is multifactorial, caused by genetic and environmental factors and currently has no definitive cure. We have investigated the protective effects of parthenolide (PTN), a compound with known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, in an in vitro model of PD, that is induced by 6-OHDA, and that causes neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells.

Evaluation of the Protective Effects of Lugol's Solution in Rats Poisoned with Aluminum Phosphide (Rice Tablets).

Aluminum phosphide (AlP) is the main component of rice tablets (a pesticide), which produces phosphine gas (PH3) when exposed to stomach acid. The most important symptoms of PH3 toxicity include, lethargy, tachycardia, hypotension, and cardiac shock. It was shown that Iodine can chemically react with PH3, and the purpose of this study is to investigate the protective effects of Lugol solution in poisoning with rice tablets.

Consanguineous marriage among familial multiple sclerosis subjects: A national registry-based study.

Background: The rising prevalence of familial multiple sclerosis (MS) in Iran has spurred interest in the potential impact of parental consanguinity on the risk of developing the disease. This study aims to aggregate current knowledge on parental consanguinity and its possible effect on MS risk, particularly among familial MS patients from various regions and ethnicities in Iran. The objective is to enhance the understanding of MS genetics and encourage further research in this field.

Objective: Body hair removal plays an important role in beauty standards, particularly for women. Finding a method that is easy to use, cheap, and can be done without supervision can significantly affect long-term hair reduction and reduce the side effects of hair removal. The present study investigated the impact of a containing 20% broad bean () extract cream on axillary hair removal.

Evaluation of oral nano-curcumin efficacy on respiratory function and quality of life in patients with bronchial non-atopic asthma: A randomized controlled trial.

Objective: Asthma is a common disease and curcumin has modest effect in inflammatory disorders. This study investigated the efficacy of nano-curcumin on asthma.

Materials And Methods: In this double-blinded randomized clinical trial, 60 patients with non-atopic bronchial asthma were randomly stratified in two groups of intervention (N=30) and control (N=30) groups.

Association between the Hopkins Falls grading scale and motor function tests in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Introduction: One of the main complications of multiple sclerosis (MS) is imbalance and walking problems that can lead to falls. This study investigated the association between a fall measurement scale called the Hopkins Falls Grading Scale (HFGS) and motor function tests in patients with MS.

Material And Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted using convenience sampling on 85 patients referred to the MS Association of Mashhad, Iran, in 2023.

Key Clinical Message: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) can have an insidious onset and a fatal prognosis in children. Patients presenting without typical signs of SLE should undergo further evaluation if they are not responding to the initial diagnosis and treatment. This is especially true for patients with rapidly progressing symptoms and deterioration in spite of treatment.

The formation of fibrotic bands in female reproductive system, including the uterus, after abdominal and pelvic surgeries, is an important medical challenge associated with many complications, including infertility and pain. Lysyl oxidase-like 2 (LoxL2) is a copper-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the cross-linking of collagen and elastin fibers in the extracellular matrix (ECM) to stabilize ECM.

Recent Advances in the Treatment of Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complex, multifaceted, progressive, and yet incurable complication that can cause irreversible damage to the individual, family, and society. In recent years strategies for the management and rehabilitation of SCI besides axonal regeneration, remyelination, and neuronal plasticity of the injured spinal cord have significantly improved. Although most of the current research and therapeutic advances have been made in animal models, so far, no specific and complete treatment has been reported for SCI in humans.

Expanding the Clinical Phenotype of PLECTIN-Related Plectinopathies.

Background: Plectinopathy-associated disorders are caused by mutations in the gene encoding Plectin protein. mutations cause a spectrum of diseases defined by varying degrees of signs, mostly with epidermolysis bullosa simplex with muscular dystrophy (EBS-MD) and plectinopathy-related disorder is limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2Q (LGMD2Q). Here we report three cases with EBS-MD and LGMD2Q disorders analyzed by exome sequencing followed by mutation confirmation.

Protective role of alpha-lipoic acid against rhabdomyolysis-induced acute kidney injury in rats.

Objectives: Rhabdomyolysis, a potentially life-threatening condition, occurs when myoglobin is released from damaged muscle cells, leading to acute kidney injury (AKI). Alpha lipoic acid (ALA), an organosulfur compound known for its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, was examined in this study for its potential impact on rhabdomyolysis-induced AKI in rats.

Materials And Methods: Six groups of rats were included in the study, with each group consisting of six rats (n=6): Control, rhabdomyolysis, rhabdomyolysis treated with different doses of ALA (5, 10, and 20 mg/kg), and ALA alone (20 mg/kg) groups.

Objectives: Perinatal asphyxia is the main risk factor for mortality and morbidity in neonates and neurological disorders in survived infants. We compared the neonatal and maternal 25 (OH) vitamin D levels in neonates with/without asphyxia.

Materials And Methods: This cross-sectional research was done on 229 neonates (including 158 neonates [69%] without asphyxia [control group] and 71 neonates [31%] with asphyxia [case group]) from 2020 to 2023 using the available sampling method.

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is known as the leading cause of disability and death globally. Anxiety disorders are also recognized as common types of mental disorders that substantially impact global health. Iran ranks among the countries with a high incidence of CAD and anxiety disorders.

Current Understanding of PCSK9 and Its Relevance to Cancer Prognosis and Immune Therapy: A Review.

The effectiveness of immunotherapy for most cancer patients remains low, with approximately 10-30% of those treated surviving. Thus, much effort is being put into finding new ways to improve immune checkpoint therapy. Our review concludes that inhibition of proprotein convertase subtilisin/Kexin type 9 (PCSK9), which plays a critical role in regulating cholesterol metabolism, can cause movement of T cells toward tumors, with increased sensitivity to immune checkpoint therapies.

Effect of selenium on anti-Tg antibody in patients with autoimmune hypothyroidism: A randomized controlled trial.

Background: The current study intends to assess the impact of oral selenium intake on anti-Tg antibody in individuals with autoimmune hypothyroidism.

Methods: In this double-blinded randomized controlled trial, two groups of 72 autoimmune hypothyroid patients were randomly assigned; one group received levothyroxine (LT4) and oral selenium and the other group was given placebo with LT4. Anti-Tg antibody, free T4, anti-TPO antibody, and TSH were identified in both groups before the treatment and also 3 months after treatment and analysis of data was done by SPSS software.

The development of a serious game for laser applications in dentistry and the evaluation of dental students' satisfaction.

Background: This study aimed to design and implement a gamified application about the theoretical aspects of laser applications in dentistry and investigate students' satisfaction with their learning experience.

Methods: An engaging educational program named Essential Skills and Knowledge in Learning Laser (ESKILLD) was developed to teach laser applications in dentistry. The program comprises two primary components: a "Tutorial and Quiz" section and a "Games" section.

Comparison of Viability of the Preserved Autologous Aspirated Fat Tissue Transfer in Refrigerated and Frozen Specimens.

Background: Fat graft surgery is one of the most effective procedures in plastic surgery, and since some patients request multiple surgeries and these cases sometimes take hours, it endangers the viability of the fat graft. In this study, we intend to evaluate the viability of adipose tissue aspirated with a syringe at refrigerator (4°C) and freezer (-20 °C) temperatures.
