Previous research has demonstrated the effect of supervisor support on the job satisfaction of long-term care workers (LTCW); however, much less is known about how this effect differs among race/ethnicity or immigration groups. We examined how supervisor support mediates the associations between race/ethnicity, immigration status, and job satisfaction among nursing assistants (NAs). Data of 2749 NAs were extracted from the National Nursing Assistant Survey (2004).

October 2022

Medical School of Chinese PLA, Department of Cardiology in Second Medical Center &, National Research Center for Geriatric Diseases, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing, 100853, China.

Aim: Angiogenesis plays a major role in atherosclerotic plaque development and instability. Our study aims to develop a novel optical and magnetic resonance (MR) dual-modality molecular imaging probe to early detect unstable plaques in vivo by targeting biomarkers of angiogenesis in murine models of atherosclerosis (AS).

Methods: Immunofluorescence and western blot were used to detect the expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor 2 (VEGFR2) in activated Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs).

National Center for Clinical Laboratories, Institute of Geriatric Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing Hospital/National Center of Gerontology, P. R. China.

Introduction: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) assay for detecting infectious agents is now in the stage of being translated into clinical practice. With no approved approaches or guidelines available, laboratories adopt customized mNGS assays to detect clinical samples. However, the accuracy, reliability, and problems of these routinely implemented assays are not clear.

Introduction: Depression may be a frequent sequela after stroke, however, its incidence has rarely been reported. The likelihood of post-stroke depression (PSD) may relate to individual factors including the presence of aphasia, which also complicates PSD diagnosis. The current study's purpose was to investigate the incidence of PSD symptoms in adults with aphasia, compare it to the incidence of PSD symptoms in adults without aphasia, and to identify potential risk factors for developing PSD in adults with aphasia.

Physical activity has well-known benefits for older adults' mood and cognitive functioning; however, it is not clear whether risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) affect the relationships of physical activity with these health outcomes among diverse older adults. This study investigated the impact of CVD risk burden on the relationships among self-reported physical activity, mood, and cognitive functioning in a diverse sample of 62 adults age 45 and older. We found that higher physical activity was associated with better attention and verbal working memory at lower CVD risk, but with worse attention and verbal working memory at higher CVD risk levels.

Economic Resources Shaping Grandparent Responsibility Within Three-Generation Households.

J Fam Econ Issues

April 2022

Department of Gerontology, Center for Social & Demographic Research On Aging, Gerontology Institute, University of Massachusetts Boston, 100 Morrissey Blvd., Boston, MA 02125-3393 USA.

The purpose of this descriptive study was to explore factors associated with perceptions of grandparent responsibility for grandchildren in three-generation households, focusing especially on a comparison of grandparents' and parents' financial contributions to the household and ethnicity of grandparent(s). The analysis used information about three-generation families in the 2011-2015 American Community Survey, retrieved through the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series. In 30% of these families, grandparents said they were "primarily responsible" for the grandchildren, even though the child's parent was also in the household.

This longitudinal study analyzed data from the 2006-2016 waves of the nationally representative Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Trajectories of depression among older adults ≥ 50 years ( = 1254) were examined over time to explore patterns of depression among those entering widowhood and the potential impact of religiosity on depressive symptoms during various stages of widowhood. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression analysis was used to examine the association between widowhood and depression and the role of religiosity as a moderator of this association.

The Emerging Role of Tissue-Resident Memory CD8 T Lymphocytes in Human Digestive Tract Cancers.

Front Oncol

January 2022

Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Tumor Immunotherapy and Nutrition Therapy, Hefei, China.

Malignant digestive tract tumors are a great threat to human public health. In addition to surgery, immunotherapy brings hope for the treatment of these tumors. Tissue-resident memory CD8 T (Trm) cells are a focus of tumor immunology research and treatment due to their powerful cytotoxic effects, ability to directly kill epithelial-derived tumor cells, and overall impact on maintaining mucosal homeostasis and antitumor function in the digestive tract.

Director, Home and Community- Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) includes a one-year 10 percentage point increase in the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage for Medicaid-funded home and community-based services (HCBS). The goal is to strengthen state efforts to help older adults and people with disabilities live safely in their homes and communities rather than in institutional settings during the COVID-19 pandemic. This essay provides a detailed description and analysis of this provision, including issues state governments need to consider when expending the additional federal revenue provided.

Despite the prominence of frontolimbic regions in depression research, recent studies also implicate posterior brain regions, including the cuneus. The current study examined the relationship between depressive symptoms and asymmetry in cuneal cortical thickness in healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 81 with primarily subthreshold levels of depressive symptoms. An asymmetry index was calculated for cortical thickness in the cuneus [(left - right) × 100/(left + right)], and regression analyses were conducted with total scores on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale predicting this asymmetry index, controlling for age and sex.

The overall goal of this analysis was to learn about residents' quality of life and quality of care in assisted living over time and from multiple viewpoints within support networks. This grounded theory analysis examined qualitative data collected from 50 residents and 169 of their care network members followed over two consecutive 2-year periods in 8 diverse settings. Quality involved a dynamic process of "negotiating priorities," which refers to working out what is most important for residents' quality of life and care.

Department of Geriatrics, Gerontology Institute of Anhui Province, The First Affiliated Hospital, Division of Life Sciences and Medicine, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China.

The detailed characteristics of neuronal cell populations in Alzheimer's disease (AD) using single-cell RNA sequencing have not been fully elucidated. To explore the characterization of neuronal cell populations in AD, this study utilized the publicly available single-nucleus RNA-sequencing datasets in the transgenic model of 5X familial Alzheimer's disease (5XFAD) and wild-type mice to reveal an AD-associated excitatory neuron population (C3:Ex.Neuron).

Article Synopsis
  • * Analysis of 418 patients revealed that 12% had positive bacterial cultures, primarily for coagulase-negative staphylococci, and those with infections were more likely to be on immunosuppressants or have undergone electrode replacements.
  • * Over a median follow-up of 36.5 months, patients with subclinical infections experienced higher composite events and rehospitalizations compared to non-infected patients, underscoring the importance of using the PADIT score for risk stratification.

"Getting Used to It, but Still Unwelcome": A Grounded Theory Study of Physical Identity Development in Later Life.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

September 2021

Department of Educational Administration & Human Resource Development, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843, USA.

Given the global trends toward an aging society and the increased desire for healthy aging in late life, this study examines older adults' perceptions of aging and their physical identity through their engagement in physical activities. Adopting a grounded theory, we interviewed 15 individuals aged 65 years and older, who were involved in physical activities on a regular basis. This study provided a final model depicting (a) divergent and convergent modes of strategies and socioemotional aspects of physical identity development in later life and (b) different strategies employed between younger-old versus older-old age groups and between participants who have underlying health conditions and those who do not.
