Fixed fibronectin-coated gold surfaces with and without adherent embryonic fibroblasts were probed via vibrational sum-frequency-generation (SFG) spectroscopy. The SFG spectra were compared to infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) data in the CH stretching region. Noticeable differences were observed in the IRRAS spectra of the samples, whereas SFG spectra of the same samples were largely similar.

Background: Rapid-cycling bipolar disorder is often characterized by a lack of response to psychopharmacological treatment, and a standard therapy has not been developed yet. The aim of this study was to examine the long-term efficacy and safety of a monotherapy with quetiapine or sodium valproate (VPA) in patients with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder.
Methods: This open-label, randomized, parallel group monotherapy pilot study was conducted at 3 German centers.

Formation of ectomycorrhizas, a symbiosis with fine roots of woody plants, is one way for soil fungi to overcome carbohydrate limitation in forest ecosystems. Fifteen potential hexose transporter proteins, of which 10 group within three clusters, are encoded in the genome of the ectomycorrhizal model fungus Laccaria bicolor. For 14 of them, transcripts were detectable.

We deposit phospholipid monolayers on highly doped p-GaAs electrodes that are precoated with methyl-mercaptobiphenyl monolayers and operate such a biofunctional electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor (EIS) setup as an analogue of a metal-oxide-semiconductor setup. Electrochemical impedance spectra measured over a wide frequency range demonstrate that the presence of a lipid monolayer remarkably slows down the diffusion of ions so that the membrane-functionalized GaAs can be subjected to electrochemical investigations for more than 3 days with no sign of degradation. The biofunctional EIS setup enables us to translate changes in the surface charge density Q and bias potentials Ubias into the change in the interface capacitance Cp.

Objective: Depressive episodes can have a very fast onset (< 1 hour) or start very slowly (> 1 month). This interesting aspect, pointing to different neurophysiological pathomechanisms, has not been systematically evaluated so far. The aim of this study was to describe speed of onset of depressive episodes in a consecutive sample of patients with at least 1 depressive episode and to investigate potential differences between patients with major depression versus bipolar affective disorders concerning this variable.

We report, compare, and analyze near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of powder samples of four different functional proteins, namely, lysozyme, ovalbumin, bovine serum albumin, and type-I collagen, at all relevant absorption edges. The spectra of all of the above proteins were found to be quite similar and to exhibit minor differences only. Nevertheless, despite the general similarity, the spectra of the individual proteins are distinguishable, and some of the respective differences clearly correlate with their amino acid compositions.

Digital in-line soft x-ray holography (DIXH) was used to image immobilized polystyrene and iron oxide particles and to distinguish them based on their different x-ray absorption cross sections in the vicinity of the carbon K-absorption edge. The element-specific information from the resonant DIXH images was correlated with high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures. We also present DIXH images of a cell nucleus and compare the contrast obtained for nuclear components with the appearance in optical microscopy.

The relative incidence of childhood-onset bipolar illness in the USA compared with that in Europe is controversial. We examined this issue in more than 500 out-patients (average age 42 years) with bipolar illness who reported age at onset of first episode, family history, and childhood physical or sexual abuse. Childhood or adolescent onset of bipolar illness was reported by 61% of those in the US cohort but by only 30% of those in The Netherlands or Germany.

High-resolution x-ray absorption and emission spectra of liquid water exhibit a strong isotope effect. Further, the emission spectra show a splitting of the 1b1 emission line, a weak temperature effect, and a pronounced excitation-energy dependence. They can be described as a superposition of two independent contributions.

Background: Clinical success of bone implants is critically related to the interaction between the implant surface and the surrounding tissue. The polymer poly(bis(trifluoroethoxy)phosphazene) (PTFEP) is a promising, highly biocompatible surface coating which also inhibits the adsorption of granulocytes, macrophages, inflammatory cells, bacteria, and platelets. However, there is limited clinical experience of PTFEP as a coating for bone implants.

The shear behavior of monolayer water films confined in a slit-like pore between hydrophilic walls is simulated in the quasistatic regime using the grand canonical Monte Carlo technique. Each wall is represented as a hexagonal lattice of force sites that interact with water through an orientation-dependent hydrogen-bonding potential. When the walls are in registry, the water oxygen atoms form either a crystal- or fluid-like structure, depending on the period of the wall's lattice.

The surface-initiated photopolymerization (SIPP) of vinyl monomers on structured self-assembled monolayers, as defined by two-dimensional (2D) initiator templates for polymer growth, is investigated. The 2D templates are prepared by electron-beam chemical lithography (EBCL) of 4'-nitro-4-mercaptobiphenyl (NBT) and chemical conversion to an asymmetric azo initiator (4'-azomethylmalonodinitrile-1,1'-biphenyl-4-thiol). Ex situ kinetic studies of the SIPP process reveal a linear increase in the thickness of the polymer layer with the irradiation/polymerization time.

Objective: The efficacy of risperidone in acute mania has been established in several controlled clinical studies. However, this may not necessarily resemble the clinical effectiveness of this treatment, as patient populations in controlled studies are considered as being not representative. This study examined risperidone monotherapy in a sample of severe manic patients in admission ward settings.

Carefully calibrated high-resolution low-noise near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectra of three homopolypetides, viz., polyisoleucine, polytyrosine, and polyhistidine at the C, N, and O K-edges, are compared with the respective spectra of parent amino acids and glycine-derived cyclic dipeptide, 2,5-diketopiperazine. An assignment of the spectral features related to the nitrogen and oxygen atoms constituting the peptide bond is suggested on the basis of a comparative analysis of the experimental spectra as well as theoretical calculations for 2,5-diketopiperazine within the real-space multiple-scattering formalism.

Objectives: Previous experimental studies have demonstrated that poly[bis(trifluoroethoxy)phosphazene] (PTFEP) nanocoated stents have antithrombotic characteristics, reduce in-stent stenosis, prevent wall inflammation, and do not hamper endothelialization. This study was designed to validate these findings in a porcine coronary artery model.
Materials And Methods: PTFEP-coated (n = 15) and bare stents (n= 13) were implanted in coronary arteries of 18 mini-pigs (4- and 12-week follow-up).
